Anyone else get a second mass email from UC Irvine thanking them for their application? It was almost the exact email I received when I submitted my app, but this time it specified that applications are beginning to be reviewed. I applied to the Psychology and Social Behavior program.

Yeah i think it's just a follow up after the interviews past monday. Borelli also emailed me saying they didnt get a photo of me and asked me to send in a photo. I think the profs are deliberating with the grad students on who's a good fit for the prog and school culture

Sorry to be nosy/annoying but the person who was emailed a rejection from Dartmouth PBS (psychology and brain science) did they email you or did you reach out to them? I haven't gotten an interview email or a rejection email...I feel weird being in limbo

I spoke to someone on the forum who mentioned they received an interview invite from dartmouth some time back. I applied there too and haven't heard anything. But seeing that it's been some time since the interview invite was sent, I think it's best we assume it's done and move on :( after a few more drinks

In a recent phone interview I had, I was asked to describe a potential thesis or dissertation project I would like to work on and how I would go about designing it (methods and everything). This question caught be by surprise and I hadn't prepared for it. So be ready to have a response in case something like this comes up!

Same here! Was expecting it more for a live interview than over Skype :(

I received an invite for a 30 minute Skype interview (University of Florida, Microbiology and Cell Science) next week, and the interview is going to be conducted by 2 faculty in the department. Neither of the faculty members conducting the interview are people I listed as potential PIs in my SOP. I think it might be a preliminary interview before formal in-person ones are sent, but I'm not totally sure. My dilemma is: should I brush up on the recent publications of my interviewers, or should I focus on the research from labs I put in my SOP? Is it more likely they'll reference their own work, or ask me about other faculty that I indicated interest in? Thanks for the help!

I would recommend brushing up on your research statement and lines of research you potentially would like to do there. They'll probably not quiz you on your POIs work and ask more about your work to see if you'll be a good fit (personality and all) for the school, department and the labs. :) all the best!

Don't stay in Los Angeles if you can (since you're just visiting Irvine). The traffic on the highway is insane. It'll take 1.5 hours to get to Irvine if you fly into LAX driving on the 405. Fly into John Wayne Airport (SNA) which is pretty much next to UCI. If you really want to stay in between. try Long Beach.

Shouldn't UCI find accommodations for you? If not, find an AirBnb (hotels in California are expensive).

SNA is not popular for international flights. So it costs 1k more for me to fly there instead of LAX. UCI has accommodations for the dates im invited for the interview. But like i mentioned earlier, i wanna fly in 1-2 days earlier to shake off the jetlag as much as possible. But thank you for the recommendation! I shall look at airbnbs around longbeach

There are still 10 days left before the deadline and she's 100% gonna wait until the very last minute to submit it, I can just tell. But thank you! I'm choosing to trust that it will be fine because at this point, there's not much else I can do.

One of my LoR writer does the same thing. He waits till the last day to submit everything. I have him on fb so I pmed him like 4hrs before the deadline and he got it all in on time! Sending good vibes your way hahah

  7. Hi guys, I got invited for interview at UCI. I am an international student and will be flying about 26hours to reach cali. I plan to fly in 1 or 2 days earlier to get some rest and shake off as much jet lag as I possibly can. Any advice on where is a good place to stay maybe between LAX and UCI?

Went to an info session where the admissions/financial aid director emphasized that if letters of recommendation were submitted even one day after the deadline, no scholarship money would be awarded. Panicked because I was still waiting on one LOR and my professor hadn't responded to my email or follow-up phone call, so ended up DRIVING TO NEW YORK from out-of-state to talk to her in person. The look on her face when she saw me in her office door was pretty priceless, as was my weak explanation that I just happened to be in the city visiting friends. Definitely an awkward moment but she was just busy and missed the email, and asked me to remind her again as many times as I needed to before the deadline.

    Still waiting for now.

This is gold hahah I hope you got your LoR in time and (get) your scholarship!

No problem! I thought it was weird too that they didn't BCC us.

It looks like so many RAs in UCLA social neuro labs just happen to be applying for grad schools in the same year... Maybe they have prioritized us just because we are already here. (I'm feeling sorry for everyone else...)

At the end of the day, it is afterall who knows you. And you guys didnt end up here by chance. All the best for your interviews at UCLA!

Does anybody else have high GRE scores in one subject but really low scores in another? Do any schools use a combined score? Do lots of schools have official cutoffs? Not sure what to expect

As with a number of others here, I have high score in one (90s for verbal, 70s for quant) and a rubbish score in another (50s for awa . I got one interview. So I think there might be some saving grace. Might need review after this cycle is over hahah

Question: I have been invited to an interview at UC Berkeley (neuroscience, not psych). I live on the east coast and flying to the west coast is a bit rough. Stanford Psych has not released their interview invites yet, and likely won't until mid-January. Stanford Psych's interview date is right after Berkeley. Berkeley wants me to book the flight before the new year, but I want to wait until I know whether I will be invited to Stanford. Should I ask Berkeley if I can wait until a few weeks later to book the flight? Should I call Stanford and say "I will be in the area... "? Thoughts?

Congrats on Berkeley! Hope you ace their interview! Is it possible for you to book the tickets but make the return ticket flexi? Living in Singapore I'll be flying more than a day to reach Cali for my interview at Irvine. Though I haven't heard back from any other school, I'll be booking my tickets with my return date flexible instead (it is more expensive, but less so than flying again).

  12. I think unless specified, the rule of thumb is to try stick below 2 pages, single spaced :)

CU-Boulder Application does not give a requirement on length. Anyone know how long they want it to be? I hear 1-2 pages single spaced on odd numbered days and 1-2 pages double spaced on even numbered days (trying to be witty and failing). Help?

And this was funny! my style of humor huehuehue

    Hello,

I’m a student from Lebanon who submitted the application to UofT and paid the required fees.

Now, I am at the stage of supplying the required documents.

One of these documents is tha English facility requirements.

I wasn’t able to admit to the exemption from this exam, besides I can’t do the metioned facility tests.

So, is there any other alternative?

Can I be able not to do any of these tests and find another solution?

Please note that my english secondary grades are 79/100.

There’s another point that I am concerned to which is the current year grade transcript.

at this time, the transcript is not found in the school, so can I just submit the previous secondary years transcript?

It might be best to contact UofT's grad school directly to discuss your best option as the prerequisites can vary from school to school. I hope someone else here can give you a more concrete recommendation, but I'd suggest contacting them directly.

  14. So i got invited to attend an interview. The person who contacted me (B) was no.2 on my SOP but is also the director of the doctoral program. Now i've been given a form to list up to 5 faculty members i'd like to meet when i'm there. Should i reorder my initial 2 POIs so that B who contacted me is now no.1 and the previous no.1 POI (A) down to no.2 or should i just stick with my initial rankings? i'm not sure if both A and B saw my SOP and B was more excited to work with me, but A is a better fit in terms of skills I wanna learn. I should note that this school does not have strict mentorship and you tend to rotate a number of labs. Thanks in advance for any input guys!
