  1. I was just discussing a general trend. I'm applying for Polt. Sci for example and even middle-ranked universities ask for 155+ quant and verbal at the very least. Depends on the program and university rankings, among other things.
  2. Thanks. I'm really confused about their PhD program. Requirements are quite lax, not even GRE is required and TOEFL score is like 80 as compared to 110 for Polt.Sci. Do they actually offer any aid or is it just a money minting program?
  3. UPDATE: Just back after re-taking the test (I'm an international applicant) and got three Quant sections For me, this appears to be a set pattern. Obviously this is my experience and also of some other respondents.
  4. I think it does have an impact on the final score but ETS is only concerned about minting money. For me, the extra Quant drained me of energy and I actually got panicked. I had the hunch that the second quant was easy and thus my final score is messed up. I bungled on the second verbal. Lost focus. Bad scores.
  5. This is subjective. Non-math ones dread Quant and the STEM types get scared of verbal.
  6. Extra AW? I would have loved that. Did you appear recently? I've not heard many getting experimental AWs.
  7. I feel your pain. P.S. Did you mention Polt.Sci/IR in all three tests as your intended major?
  8. If you don't mind my asking, what's with this third cycle? Are you focusing on the top-ranked schools and can't compromise? Did you get any offers during the previous two cycles? Asking because I am opting for the multiple apps route as I don't have good GRE scores and also already kinda late by a few years.
  9. Still you had to go through significant hassle plus the mailing costs etc. A very unethical hoop I must say if that is the case. Even more problematic for international students.
  10. Don't rely on Manhattan online tests. I've a very bad experience with them. Can't say about the 5lbs book. Going through all of those questions will certainly help I guess.
  11. Sorry to say but that's a bad score. I scored 310 and that is still considered too low, since my quant was 149. I would recommend retaking it.
  12. Just to add a bit. When you get three quants, you are not sure which one is the actual one. Obviously the one before the break is the actual one and the score on this one determines you final score. Still, the remaining two quants can be equally challenging and you can't really tell which one is the actual second section. I guess my second quant was experimental as the questions were quite tough. I was happy for a moment that my wild guesses on the first section have been on the mark. Too bad when the third section came up and the questions were relatively easier but still a hard nut to crack. I think ETS is being dishonest by actually messing up the chances for non-math background students. The same applies for those with sciences/engineering background that get three verbal sections. Still I think verbal is easier than math as one has more leeway to guess stuff.
  13. From the responses here and my personal experience, it can be safe to assume there is an 80 percent chance that social sciences/humanities students will get a quant experimental section. Super bad but super possible.
  14. Don't miss quadratic equations, coordinate geometry etc. GRE questions are getting tougher especially for non-math backgrounds as they are increasingly getting three quant sections.
  15. I guess you will still need a baseline quant score even for History. Bad but that's what is the rule in the US I guess.
  16. Maybe ETS is doing that to get the students to appear more than once? They're minting money from the exam, which is super expensive in the first place.
  17. Yes I'm seeing a pattern there. It might not have been the case if it were just me but so many people I'm talking to are reporting the same thing. This is super creepy if real. Unethical even.
  18. Thanks for your input. Cheating/falsifying is a factor but I guess when many schools have stopped asking for official transcripts then there are ways for them to overcome this problem. +100 for your proposal for having a central database for transcripts. Will make things much simpler.
  19. Why's there such a great anomaly between the official transcripts and self-uploaded copies by applicants? Some schools encourage students to upload scanned copies of their transcripts. Others absolutely want the official transcripts to be sent in sealed envelopes from the mother institutions. What's the point really in official submission when the admission is not granted in the first place? This is particularly difficult for international students that are hard pressed at meeting additional requirements and have to negotiate bureaucratic red tapes. Waiting/delivery times are also much longer. The application phase is just that, a phase. The adcoms and higher-ups of the non-cooperative universities need to up their game.
