Also, be sure to check your spam folders everyone, my Davis letter was in there (rejected on the basis of poor fit/not enough faculty to support my specialization).

Dropped by to second this. An important email from one of the grad schools was in there and it was time sensitive. Fortunately, the grad school was understanding, but I was really upset that my email provider marked that email as spam even though the sender has sent me emails before. Check your spam folders!!! Also, it might be a good idea to designate the DGS, grad admin assistant, and other important people's addresses as not spam.

Just got an email from UIowa moving me off the waitlist into ACCEPTENCE with five year funding. I'm so happy. I feel like I can finally breathe knowing I will for sure be going into a program in the Fall. Five schools left to hear back from!

Yes!! I'm so glad you got off the waitlist! Acceptance + funding is always good. Definitely celebrate. You're going to grad school! Hope you hear some more good news soon!

After my dejected post about Davis, I just found out I got accepted!!! I was truly convinced I hadn't made it in...so to those still waiting, don't give up hope just yet!

Haha I'm so glad it worked out for you! 100% acceptance rate! Now you're on your way to your PhD dream.

I'm also really curious about the Yale acceptance. I'm still waiting to here from them, Vanderbilt, and UCSD. Excited about the upcoming open houses though.

I'm assuming a rejection from Columbia. Congratulations to those who got accepted! So far I've only gotten accepted, but waitlisted for funding at Albany. I haven't heard back from NYU, Temple, UPenn, Uconn, and Princeton. It sucks when the choice of schools you can apply to is limited. I can't relocate :/ Is everyone planning on moving close to the school you'll be attending?

Considering the schools that I applied to are all over the U.S., I plan to move close to whichever school I will be attending. One of them won't be as much as a move as the others because it's in my home state and only about an hour and 30 min from where I live, but the rest will be one heck of an adventure. If it's any consolation for you, even though your choice of schools appears limited, the NYC and Tri-State area is a hub for opportunities and visiting professors. If anything, the researchers from the other schools you couldn't apply to might visit your school or at least stop by in the area. I hope you get to hear some positive news from the rest of your schools!

I never thought I'd be glad to be single at 30, but it makes this process a lot easier. When I told my boss where I was applying (6 schools in 6 states in . . . 5 regions?) she laughed and teased, "Are you sure you're not limiting yourself too much geographically?"

I did something similar! When I registered for the GRE and had to check where I was applying I think I checked every region of the U.S. except for Hawaii and Alaska. I guess this is one positive of being single.

Does anyone know what's going on with Yale? The decisions are usually out by now.

Yale is the only school from my list that I haven't heard anything from. I didn't even see any results posted. I wonder when we'll hear from them.

  4. 26 minutes ago, qeta said:

@MintChocoChip I think this is such an important decision and one that will impact you for such a long time that you can give yourself the permission to be a little bit selfish and put your own needs first. I would stay with the current grad student IMHO. It's really nice that you're so considerate though - I'd love to have someone like you in my cohort.

Thanks, @qeta! :) After reading what you posted about the benefits of being an overnight guest, I started to think that maybe I should do it. I really hope you find the program that not only fits you better but also supports you more than your previous MA.

So, I'm very confused right now. I just got an email from the UC Irvine financial aid department saying that they received my FAFSA (I don't know why but I sent FAFSAs to all the schools I applied to even though I know PhDs are funded), but when I went to check on my grad application status it still says "under review."

I did the same thing with sending FAFSAs to all of the schools I applied to just in case. I'm not sure about UC Irvine's case, but I did get two FAFSA related emails and they seemed to be an automatic thing.

    @infovore Congrats!!

@qeta Would it be worthwhile to take up the offer to stay with an overnight host if you live close to the school? I wasn't sure whether to take up the offer from a school that I live fairly close to. My hesitation comes partly from wanting to give the students who lived further away the option and partly from my own shyness, though the former is the bigger concern.

On another note, I find it funny how, after someone mentioned CU Boulder, the decisions started coming out. Then I also asked about UCSD and now the decisions started coming out today. What a coincidence! (maybe if I mention Yale again they'll come around... ;))

  6. 8 hours ago, NinaMistina said:

Called Boulder CU, they said no decisions have been made, we will find out mid february.

Thank you for the update! I'm waiting on CU Boulder as well.

@crimsociol I really admire your tenacity. I'm so glad that the strategy worked out for you! I also did something similar for all of my schools except for the last three due to time constraints. Though in my case I wanted to see if they would be turned off by my different background.

Has anyone heard from Yale or UCSD?

I saw that on my application page as well. Clicked on it and they send you a username and password but it doesn't look like anything I need to concern myself with. Admittedly, I only spent a quick minute looking at it.

Yeah I saw that as well. I made an account and started filling it but then stopped after I saw the rest of the questions required slightly more detailed responses. I think the website said our applications wouldn't be affected if we don't fill it, but I have no idea whether this affects funding or not. It seems to be for undergrads too.

Quick question -- has anyone heard of a decision coming out on a weekend? Maybe like an informal email from faculty? Trying to anticipate my mindset this weekend haha

    Hi All!

I'm new to the forums, but have admittedly been lurking. Awesome to see how supportive this group is. I have one acceptance so far, UW-Madison, but still waiting to hear from Notre Dame and Johns Hopkins. I've seen nothing but silence from JHU, but I've seen several interviews and an acceptance for ND which is making me anxious. I have slept a grand total of 6 hours in the past 3 days with the anxiety. I hope we all get some news in the next 3 hours. That would be a nice gifts before the weekend hits.

    Stay positive!

Congrats on UW-Madison! I hope you get to hear from the rest of your schools.

Dang y'all. What a wild day on this forum! I got my Duke rejection while laying in bed sick with the flu and something about that just feels...poetic? :-)

I apparently ran out of reactions, but I just wanna say that this means a lot to me. I struggled with this a lot in the past and still do sometimes, but remembering that I do have my strengths and achievements helps to keep things in perspective. I'm sorry you had to get that Duke rejection while sick with the flu. I hope you feel better soon. Wish I can send some soup.

I keep checking my email every 5 minutes even though I've told myself not to check it for the rest of the night because I've got lawsuits to continue going over for my thesis, but it's so hard to work thinking that I've been rejected from UW-Madison. Anyone got any advice on how to not focus on the fear of a rejection?

Focus on the present instead of worrying about the possible futures. Rejection is just one possible future and it isn't set in stone. I distracted myself with other hobbies and I think doing something else and being mindful of what I was doing helped to keep my mind away from the applications process. So perhaps get back into other hobbies or even focus more on your thesis while keeping yourself in the present moment of doing them. I know it can be really hard when you've invested so much time and hard work, but it's also because you invested so much that you deserve to relax and enjoy other parts of life.

Yeah, and my fit at the "higher ranked" schools I feel was better than my fit at UT anyway, but still...I guess I'm nervous because my application isn't perfect (GRE scores are average and my quant score is on the low side, my UG GPA is mediocre and I have a graduate coursework GPA that's the equivalent of 3.9-4.0 but it's from coursework I did abroad in a non-English speaking country in the native language (I'm an American) so I have no clue how adcomms will see that), I'm switching disciplines (from sociocultural anthropology to sociology) and I want to focus on ethnography/qualitative methods (which isn't that popular in sociology as far as I can tell)...but like you said, anything could happen, and I hope that I get some good news and that I don't get shut out of all 7 programs that I applied to

I'm also switching disciplines but from a health profession to sociology (concentrating on medical sociology though). I was also nervous wondering how they would take that into account so I was shocked when I got the acceptances. I think since your background is similar to what you want to do that can actually be an advantage for your application. I wish you the best for the rest of the programs you applied to!

Rejection from Duke and waitlisted for Iowa. I feel disappointed that I didn't get an offer from Iowa, as this is my undergraduate institution and I earned a 4.02 GPA, spoke at commencement, work at campus research centers, and am highly involved in the Iowa City community. Trying to not take it personally, but I'm kind of freaking out now because Iowa was the lowest ranked school I applied to. So to not get accepted here makes me really scared to my chances at other schools.

I've also heard that sometimes schools reject or waitlist because they think the applicant would go to other schools and reject them so you might actually have better chances at your other schools. I'll be keeping you in mind as I weigh my decision.

You have no idea! I was already happy just receiving the first acceptance since it meant I was officially going to grad school even if I got rejected from the other programs. Then the other two acceptances came in and I just went bananas. I'm really trying to weigh my options while keeping in mind fit, funding, and other things. I bet you can probably do any of them even if they aren't matched with your Myers-Briggs personality type, but it's cool to have some ideas of things to do to deal with stress. Thanks so much! That’s really nice, I appreciate it. I’m local and can’t move (spouse with job and all that)! I started thinking about it bc I read in their website they let candidates know about acceptance mid-late Jan and then about funding “by the end of January.” That was the statement that set me off. I keep telling myself if it’s meant to be it’ll be. I’m 32 so I feel “old” to be going for it but I finally feel ready to do it so now I’m like ahhh!! I want it so bad, ya know? I guess I still haven’t received that official no but am feeling pretty down. Thanks for reading!!

Hey there! I'm still rooting for you because it's still January and there's still time! It could be that they are doing something different this year or that there was an unexpected delay in reaching out to you. We never know until the schools actually tell us so don't lose hope!

Also, I remember when I went to grad school for a health profession, I had a few classmates that were around your age and others that were married. They also felt the same way in both the application process and during school. You're definitely not alone. Many of us younger folk didn't mind and I think we all just saw each other as equals working towards the same goal of completing the program and becoming a health professional. It's definitely never too late to start a dream and I wish you luck. Perhaps take the time to do other things that you weren't able to do during the application process or things that you won't be able to do once you are in grad school. You've worked hard too complete your applications. You deserve a break for yourself too. :)

  18. The closest I've seen are schools that offer specialization in science studies. It has knowledge in it but specific to science, technology, and medicine. I was also trying to look for schools because my interests also involved sociology of knowledge. You can try University of California San Diego. They have comparative historical and sociology of science, technology, and medicine. Hopefully someone else can provide more schools.

Hah I know how you feel. UCSF's scared me when I checked and saw an exclamation point that I think said I didn't submit the app. Another part of the portal says that I did. These applications making us stress so much...<_<

I wish I was good at memorizing the time differences! When I had to reply for the UCSF interview, I had to double check that I understood what time it was on my time vs. theirs. Luckily, the calendar app on my phone was able to convert the time difference when I clicked on the date to register it and confirm that I understood the interview time.

I'm already in survival mode and planning to retake the GRE in May. I thought this time, I was going to be more confident, but my abysmal GRE scores is making my anxiety run high. I haven't heard from any schools yet; however after comparing my 146/144/3.5  to everyone else's scores, I'm not that confident that I'll be getting in this year

    : (

If you're looking to improve for the GRE I second @qualsoc2018 Magoosh suggestion. They helped me so much with my GRE studying. Sometimes they offer a discount too so be on the lookout for that. They are still a lot cheaper than some of the alternatives and very flexible to your schedule. They also have a lot of things that are free like their vocabulary app, their blog, and their ebooks. I think their vocabulary app helped me go from the 150s to the 160s in the verbal section and vocab is my weakest area in the GRE. I also prefer Magoosh for the verbal section in general over Manhattan. I also recommend vocabulary.com. I think they have the Baron's GRE 500 words on there that you can save and quiz yourself on. I like that on the website you can play the vocab as a game and that it tests if you know the vocab through different methods. For quant, I realized I needed to do more practice problems in order to understand the concepts so chugging through the Manhattan 5lb book helped.

Hello all! I've been stalking all you and decided it is time for me to interact. I am finishing my masters now at a state school in Texas. I have applied to only 5 programs, which now seems like the worst decision- Boulder, Rutgers, Northeaster, CUNY, and Wayne State- all based on research interests and professors with similar or overlapping interests. I have a great CV- presentations, no publications, research intern, TA for years, started a non-profit. I did absolutely terrible on the GRE because of 5 surgeries last year (mentioned this in my statement). So, basically, I am freaking out looking at everyone's amazing scores and accomplishments. I am hoping and waiting like all of you and wish everyone the best of luck! For anyone who has gone through this before, how appropriate is it to call the school and ask for an update? Thanks!

Hey! We got some similar schools: Boulder and Rutgers. What are your research interests out of curiosity? Even though you didn't do great on the GRE, I think the fact that you started a non-profit, had presentations, been a research intern, and TA'd is awesome. That must have been horrible to have to go through 5 surgeries and I would hope the schools understand it was out of your hands. I think you accomplished a lot. I definitely can't say that I've done any of those, but I also know that I have other experiences that people don't have (I come from a non-sociology background and have experiences related to it). I guess we all have our good points and our not so good points though. Best of luck to both of us!

Good luck to you and I can't wait to hear your status. I am definitely going to be messaging you!

You're welcome! I second what @abenz says about getting interview practice and making connections. It's always good to get practice and you never know what connections the people you interview with might have. I also wonder if PCOM has other positions that you might be interested in such as research positions. I don't know if it is typical in research or PhD programs, but I know in some job interviews you could get referred to other positions that could be better suited for you depending on your skill set. I understand the guilt of having your parents pay for your education since I'm in the same position. Having my parents pay for undergrad and part of my masters, I too am looking for places that fund. You're definitely not alone! Good luck to you too!

Thank you! :) I think it went well. It appears I researched the department well. I'm just hoping for the best. Also, I just realized we have similar interests and a few of the same schools, although I focus on knowledge, social psychology, and social networks on top of sociology of health/med. Hopefully we both get in somewhere!

Also, with the AW, I feel like the "writing" in the title is a misnomer. I heard that there used to be a logic section and I feel like that is what is really being tested (or the "analytical" part). It seems to be more about how much you can tear the argument or issue apart while writing in a way that makes sense than actual prose. That's why I totally believe you that your writing skill isn't reflected by your score (which is still great by the way!).

Hi everybody. I'm so excited and nervous for this next month, I wonder what the universe has in plan for us! I just graduated from the University of Iowa this December, with a major in Sociology and double minors in Communication Studies and Philosophy. I earned a 4.02 GPA and actually gave the Commencement speech at graduation (this is surreal considering my first years at the University (entered fall 2013) I was battling mental illness and left to seek treatment- which I did not mention on any applications after lots of thought- I am now in recovery for the past 2 years). I found my research passion as I began an internship at the University's Public Policy Center in the Social and Education Research Program. I started January 2017 on the project, which is a research-practice partnership with a local school district to address disparities in student outcomes. We conduct school climate surveys, provide recommendations and policy briefs, evaluate professional development, etc. I had always been passionate about sociology, and the power of sociological research to address social inequalities, and this internship gave me a specific area of study to focus my efforts on. Over the summer 2017, I did a volunteer internship at Johnson County Social Services and designed and conducted two program evaluations on youth programs the county is doing. I started an internship at the local school district due to my work on the partnership, and now work with the Director of Equity and Engagement. I also got a job over the summer as a telephone research interviewer at the Iowa Social Science Research Center and am now a supervisor. I decided to apply to grad school in September, as it became clearer that to be able achieve my goals and dreams, I need professional research training and expertise from a graduate program. I began to study for the GRE, I took the GRE after a few months and scored 160 V/153 W/4.5 AW. I got my CV, statement of purposes, writing samples, transcripts, and letters of rec all in order and worked so hard to get all my applications in, while also finishing school to graduate on Dec. 16th (and make a speech!), along with my jobs and internships. It was a crazy past couple months, and now I'm just working at the school district and research center waiting for results!

My research interests are: social stratification, social and educational policy, race/ethnicity.

Schools I applied to: University of Wisc Madison, University of Mich Ann Arbor, University of Penn, Duke, Northwestern, Harvard, Princeton, Indiana-Bloomington, UIowa, Cornell

I am nervous that my GRE scores aren't super competitive, my undergrad institution isn't "prestigious", and I have no publications (I have assisted in 3 research reports with the Public Policy Center though), and no grants/fancy awards. I am confident about my GPA (I'm a super nerd- I love school, writing, and reading), research experience, letters of rec, CV, and SOP.

Hey there! While our research interests are different, we have a few schools in common: University of Wisc Madison, Indiana-Bloomington, and UIowa. I'd say your alma mater is prestigious to me at least (plus I have two professors that like the research that someone there did). I also come from an undergrad that isn't "prestigious" and I have no pubs. I still think we both have a shot at this though. Your accomplishments along with your recovery just shows how you didn't allow mental illness to define you and your persistence in achieving your goals. That's really awesome and I'm glad you took the time to take care of yourself. Best of luck to you and your endeavors!

I was strongly considering UCSD, Vanderbilt, Yale, and Indiana-B cos of their great emphasis on the sociology of health. I ultimately decided to narrow my applications though cos of time and $$$ issues. Now I think that perhaps I should gave applied for more soc programs. Oh well! Let's hope it works out well for both of us. :)

Yes let's hope it works out for both of us! :)

Did anyone else try the personality types quiz yet or take it again?

I'm still hoping to get one of those UChi interviews. Entirely understand. I feel like you still have a shot at getting one. There are also the schools that interview a few people and accept others without an interview, so hold onto that thought too!

Your prediction was right. I got an interview from Rutgers!

Hi! So today I received my first two rejections, one from Temple University where I went to for undergrad (that was in Clinical Psych-I know I am in the Sociology forum so bear with me) and Rutgers University. My first choice is Temple University's Sociology PHD program. Has anyone else applied? I was told they are still reviewing applications. I am also waiting on Boston University for their decision on my Sociology PHD application. They said since the deadline just ended it is going to have 4-6 weeks for them to take a decision. I did receive an interview at PCOM, Philadelphia School of Ostrepedic Medicine but they do not fund. My heart was crushed today with these two rejections and I had to call for both! I wasn't contacted. I was actually crying at work (hiding it well though). I have a masters degree in School Counseling with a 3.89 GPA and have been working as a School Counselor in Florida for 2 years. Low GRE scores but I am not a good test taker. It seems childish but I can't help wondering why no-one wants me. Am I just not made for this? I cannot be stuck as a School Counselor forever, I absolutely hate it. I am now looking at masters programs that are fully funded, even though it would be my second masters. Is anyone else just feeling extremely discouraged?

Feel free to message me if you are in a similar boat or haven't heard from anyone either! We need to stick together :(

I'm sorry to hear about this @carolynb

I just want to say that even though what happened was terrible, I commend you for accomplishing the masters degree with that high GPA and being able to work as a counselor for 2 years despite hating it. That takes a lot of perseverance and hard work which is important for this application process so I say you are made for this. I also understand switching programs since I'm doing the same thing and it can be hard sometimes to translate our experiences into Sociology. Perhaps along with the other advice that was given here, try to see if you were able to show how your experiences as a school counselor would inform your research. You also have BU and the interview at PCOM going for you so don't lose hope just yet!

I second @ThePastelCalico's statement that it is more about finding room for students. The schools want to be able to give the best amount of resources possible, but as a consequence they cannot take a lot of students.

It's okay to feel the way you're feeling now. Take the time to process the feelings. Then afterwards, see how you can grow and think about what other opportunities you can pursue. I'm not a GRE expert, but I know some resources that could help when you decide to take it again. Message me if you wanna know or just need someone to chat with. This board is full of wonderful supportive people and we are here for you.

Congrats to the two UCSF interviews! Anyone claiming them?

I can claim one of the UCSF interviews though they actually conduct two for each student so technically I have 2 interviews from them.

There's another Rutgers interview where the student is on the shortlist? Who are you!?!? Lol.

Congratulations! Can't wait to hear the good news!

I claim the Rutgers interview. So excited!

I tend to believe that interviews serve more of a symbolic purpose --- when I interviewed with Chicago, it was basically the professor asking me if I had any question about their department.

    I got a Rutgers interview too! I hope yours goes/went well @X.G

Congrats to more interviews and acceptances! This board just gets more and more exciting everyday. I'm rooting for you all!
