  1. Dropped by to second this. An important email from one of the grad schools was in there and it was time sensitive. Fortunately, the grad school was understanding, but I was really upset that my email provider marked that email as spam even though the sender has sent me emails before. Check your spam folders!!! Also, it might be a good idea to designate the DGS, grad admin assistant, and other important people's addresses as not spam.
  2. Yay congrats!! Also congrats on Shriver! That's awesome! Congrats on your Valentine's Day gifts! I'm so happy for you! Yes!! I'm so glad you got off the waitlist! Acceptance + funding is always good. Definitely celebrate. You're going to grad school! Hope you hear some more good news soon! Haha I'm so glad it worked out for you! 100% acceptance rate! Now you're on your way to your PhD dream. I'm also really curious about the Yale acceptance. I'm still waiting to here from them, Vanderbilt, and UCSD. Excited about the upcoming open houses though.
  3. Considering the schools that I applied to are all over the U.S., I plan to move close to whichever school I will be attending. One of them won't be as much as a move as the others because it's in my home state and only about an hour and 30 min from where I live, but the rest will be one heck of an adventure. If it's any consolation for you, even though your choice of schools appears limited, the NYC and Tri-State area is a hub for opportunities and visiting professors. If anything, the researchers from the other schools you couldn't apply to might visit your school or at least stop by in the area. I hope you get to hear some positive news from the rest of your schools! I did something similar! When I registered for the GRE and had to check where I was applying I think I checked every region of the U.S. except for Hawaii and Alaska. I guess this is one positive of being single. OMG YES!!!!! Congrats!! I'm so happy for you @abenz! I hope you get off the waitlist soon! Yale is the only school from my list that I haven't heard anything from. I didn't even see any results posted. I wonder when we'll hear from them.
  4. Thanks, @qeta! After reading what you posted about the benefits of being an overnight guest, I started to think that maybe I should do it. I really hope you find the program that not only fits you better but also supports you more than your previous MA.
  5. I did the same thing with sending FAFSAs to all of the schools I applied to just in case. I'm not sure about UC Irvine's case, but I did get two FAFSA related emails and they seemed to be an automatic thing. @infovore Congrats!! @qeta Would it be worthwhile to take up the offer to stay with an overnight host if you live close to the school? I wasn't sure whether to take up the offer from a school that I live fairly close to. My hesitation comes partly from wanting to give the students who lived further away the option and partly from my own shyness, though the former is the bigger concern. On another note, I find it funny how, after someone mentioned CU Boulder, the decisions started coming out. Then I also asked about UCSD and now the decisions started coming out today. What a coincidence! (maybe if I mention Yale again they'll come around... )
  6. Thank you for the update! I'm waiting on CU Boulder as well. @crimsociol I really admire your tenacity. I'm so glad that the strategy worked out for you! I also did something similar for all of my schools except for the last three due to time constraints. Though in my case I wanted to see if they would be turned off by my different background. Has anyone heard from Yale or UCSD?
  7. Yeah I saw that as well. I made an account and started filling it but then stopped after I saw the rest of the questions required slightly more detailed responses. I think the website said our applications wouldn't be affected if we don't fill it, but I have no idea whether this affects funding or not. It seems to be for undergrads too. I got my Rutgers acceptance Saturday night from the graduate program director, so yup they can come out on a weekend night. I'm also in the same time zone as Rutgers to give more context. Congrats on UW-Madison! I hope you get to hear from the rest of your schools.
  8. I apparently ran out of reactions, but I just wanna say that this means a lot to me. I struggled with this a lot in the past and still do sometimes, but remembering that I do have my strengths and achievements helps to keep things in perspective. I'm sorry you had to get that Duke rejection while sick with the flu. I hope you feel better soon. Wish I can send some soup. Nope, not yet. I remember talking to a professor there before though and she said that I should hear from them by February. Ahh I'm sorry you had to go through all of that at once. I wish I could offer advice on the project, but I thank you for sharing this lesson. I know I might dive into some controversial issues and I need to remember to predict how controversial the research is.
  9. That last sentence made me chuckle. So sorry for the Duke rejection but congrats on your law school admissions! Hopefully I won't need to take up your offer, but at least I now know where to find one if I do.
  10. Joining the UW-Madison rejections club. It wasn't my best fit but it still stung inside. They must have been really struggling financially if there wasn't a waitlist this year.
  11. YESS!!! Congratulations! I'm so happy for you! That job sounds really awesome and that's a great alternative. Hoping you get to hear more good news from other schools. Congrats! That program sounds really cool. Lol I know I had to read my emails a few times to make sure I really did get accepted. WOW!! Congrats! That's so awesome @latemeg Really really happy you got in. Definitely celebrate. Focus on the present instead of worrying about the possible futures. Rejection is just one possible future and it isn't set in stone. I distracted myself with other hobbies and I think doing something else and being mindful of what I was doing helped to keep my mind away from the applications process. So perhaps get back into other hobbies or even focus more on your thesis while keeping yourself in the present moment of doing them. I know it can be really hard when you've invested so much time and hard work, but it's also because you invested so much that you deserve to relax and enjoy other parts of life.
  12. Thank you! I hope you get to hear some good news too! I'm also switching disciplines but from a health profession to sociology (concentrating on medical sociology though). I was also nervous wondering how they would take that into account so I was shocked when I got the acceptances. I think since your background is similar to what you want to do that can actually be an advantage for your application. I wish you the best for the rest of the programs you applied to! YES!! Congrats! I'm so happy for you! Enjoy Northeastern and Boston! I wish you the best. Ah I'm sorry to hear that. I would still wait and see what NYU and Columbia say if you didn't get anything yet, but I wish you luck with the job search and master's thesis. Also forgot to mention, congrats to the Indiana Bloomington, CUNY, UCSC, and Rice interviews, the U of Toronto acceptances, and the UCLA acceptance!
  13. Thanks everyone! And thank you for the summary of Iowa City @wildflower21. It's nice to get the perspective of someone native to the community. It sounds like a cool place to be in!
  14. I've also heard that sometimes schools reject or waitlist because they think the applicant would go to other schools and reject them so you might actually have better chances at your other schools. I'll be keeping you in mind as I weigh my decision. You have no idea! I was already happy just receiving the first acceptance since it meant I was officially going to grad school even if I got rejected from the other programs. Then the other two acceptances came in and I just went bananas. I'm really trying to weigh my options while keeping in mind fit, funding, and other things. I want to give myself time to think while respecting the time of the universities and the other applicants.
  15. Congrats!! I found out today too that I was accepted to U of Iowa with five years of funding. Last week and today have been nuts for me as I found out that I was accepted to UNM, Rutgers, and U of Iowa. All of them with funding packages. I honestly can't believe it and I'm wondering whether I'm dreaming. I'm really really hoping everyone else gets accepted somewhere because I want you guys to be able to experience the way that I am feeling right now: happy, relieved and just grateful all around. We're still in January and February is on the way! Hang in there everyone!
  16. Man I'm sorry guys. I saw the string of Duke rejections and just couldn't believe it. Hang in there! We're still in January and April is more than 2 months away. That means there's still more time for that acceptance! I saw another acceptance posted in the results recently.
  17. https://www.bustle.com/p/the-best-way-to-deal-with-stress-based-on-your-myers-briggs-personality-type-7815246 Found this awhile ago but forgot to post it here. It's a link to ways to deal with stress based on your Myers-Briggs type. Hope this helps anyone stressing out! I bet you can probably do any of them even if they aren't matched with your Myers-Briggs personality type, but it's cool to have some ideas of things to do to deal with stress. I think it's spot on for me as INTP though except for less interest in theories. I noticed that whenever I solve something I feel really happy and I love doing jigsaw puzzles.
  18. Hey there! I'm still rooting for you because it's still January and there's still time! It could be that they are doing something different this year or that there was an unexpected delay in reaching out to you. We never know until the schools actually tell us so don't lose hope! Also, I remember when I went to grad school for a health profession, I had a few classmates that were around your age and others that were married. They also felt the same way in both the application process and during school. You're definitely not alone. Many of us younger folk didn't mind and I think we all just saw each other as equals working towards the same goal of completing the program and becoming a health professional. It's definitely never too late to start a dream and I wish you luck. Perhaps take the time to do other things that you weren't able to do during the application process or things that you won't be able to do once you are in grad school. You've worked hard too complete your applications. You deserve a break for yourself too. I didn't apply to Emory, but I think you still have a shot. I also freaked out when I saw the Rutgers interviews and kept thinking the worst. A few days later, I got an invite. It might be that they are doing it in batches, or your particular interviewer is still figuring out time slots they can do interviews. Crossing my fingers for you! Congrats UT Austin admits! I saw a bunch of you in the results page and thought that was awesome. Also great job landing that interview @manofthehoff!
  19. The closest I've seen are schools that offer specialization in science studies. It has knowledge in it but specific to science, technology, and medicine. I was also trying to look for schools because my interests also involved sociology of knowledge. You can try University of California San Diego. They have comparative historical and sociology of science, technology, and medicine. Hopefully someone else can provide more schools.
  20. Hah I know how you feel. UCSF's scared me when I checked and saw an exclamation point that I think said I didn't submit the app. Another part of the portal says that I did. These applications making us stress so much... I wish I was good at memorizing the time differences! When I had to reply for the UCSF interview, I had to double check that I understood what time it was on my time vs. theirs. Luckily, the calendar app on my phone was able to convert the time difference when I clicked on the date to register it and confirm that I understood the interview time. Woah that's awesome! Thank you for the lovely painting. I heard looking at nature helps with stress. Looks like we're in the same time zone! I have the same 3hr issue with the California schools.
  21. If you're looking to improve for the GRE I second @qualsoc2018 Magoosh suggestion. They helped me so much with my GRE studying. Sometimes they offer a discount too so be on the lookout for that. They are still a lot cheaper than some of the alternatives and very flexible to your schedule. They also have a lot of things that are free like their vocabulary app, their blog, and their ebooks. I think their vocabulary app helped me go from the 150s to the 160s in the verbal section and vocab is my weakest area in the GRE. I also prefer Magoosh for the verbal section in general over Manhattan. I also recommend vocabulary.com. I think they have the Baron's GRE 500 words on there that you can save and quiz yourself on. I like that on the website you can play the vocab as a game and that it tests if you know the vocab through different methods. For quant, I realized I needed to do more practice problems in order to understand the concepts so chugging through the Manhattan 5lb book helped. Hey! We got some similar schools: Boulder and Rutgers. What are your research interests out of curiosity? Even though you didn't do great on the GRE, I think the fact that you started a non-profit, had presentations, been a research intern, and TA'd is awesome. That must have been horrible to have to go through 5 surgeries and I would hope the schools understand it was out of your hands. I think you accomplished a lot. I definitely can't say that I've done any of those, but I also know that I have other experiences that people don't have (I come from a non-sociology background and have experiences related to it). I guess we all have our good points and our not so good points though. Best of luck to both of us!
  22. You're welcome! I second what @abenz says about getting interview practice and making connections. It's always good to get practice and you never know what connections the people you interview with might have. I also wonder if PCOM has other positions that you might be interested in such as research positions. I don't know if it is typical in research or PhD programs, but I know in some job interviews you could get referred to other positions that could be better suited for you depending on your skill set. I understand the guilt of having your parents pay for your education since I'm in the same position. Having my parents pay for undergrad and part of my masters, I too am looking for places that fund. You're definitely not alone! Good luck to you too! Thank you! I think it went well. It appears I researched the department well. I'm just hoping for the best. Also, I just realized we have similar interests and a few of the same schools, although I focus on knowledge, social psychology, and social networks on top of sociology of health/med. Hopefully we both get in somewhere! Also, with the AW, I feel like the "writing" in the title is a misnomer. I heard that there used to be a logic section and I feel like that is what is really being tested (or the "analytical" part). It seems to be more about how much you can tear the argument or issue apart while writing in a way that makes sense than actual prose. That's why I totally believe you that your writing skill isn't reflected by your score (which is still great by the way!). Hey there! While our research interests are different, we have a few schools in common: University of Wisc Madison, Indiana-Bloomington, and UIowa. I'd say your alma mater is prestigious to me at least (plus I have two professors that like the research that someone there did). I also come from an undergrad that isn't "prestigious" and I have no pubs. I still think we both have a shot at this though. Your accomplishments along with your recovery just shows how you didn't allow mental illness to define you and your persistence in achieving your goals. That's really awesome and I'm glad you took the time to take care of yourself. Best of luck to you and your endeavors!
  23. Yes let's hope it works out for both of us! Did anyone else try the personality types quiz yet or take it again?
  24. Your prediction was right. I got an interview from Rutgers! I'm sorry to hear about this @carolynb I just want to say that even though what happened was terrible, I commend you for accomplishing the masters degree with that high GPA and being able to work as a counselor for 2 years despite hating it. That takes a lot of perseverance and hard work which is important for this application process so I say you are made for this. I also understand switching programs since I'm doing the same thing and it can be hard sometimes to translate our experiences into Sociology. Perhaps along with the other advice that was given here, try to see if you were able to show how your experiences as a school counselor would inform your research. You also have BU and the interview at PCOM going for you so don't lose hope just yet! I second @ThePastelCalico's statement that it is more about finding room for students. The schools want to be able to give the best amount of resources possible, but as a consequence they cannot take a lot of students. It's okay to feel the way you're feeling now. Take the time to process the feelings. Then afterwards, see how you can grow and think about what other opportunities you can pursue. I'm not a GRE expert, but I know some resources that could help when you decide to take it again. Message me if you wanna know or just need someone to chat with. This board is full of wonderful supportive people and we are here for you.
  25. I can claim one of the UCSF interviews though they actually conduct two for each student so technically I have 2 interviews from them. I got a Rutgers interview too! I hope yours goes/went well @X.G! Congrats to more interviews and acceptances! This board just gets more and more exciting everyday. I'm rooting for you all!
