  1. Congrats! Must be a relief to finally get that last app done. I'm waiting for a sign from the adcoms and my email notifications. Though I'm trying to enjoy not having to do those apps anymore.
  2. It seems we only have UWM in common. I applied to Rutgers, UCSF, UCSD, UWM, UNM, Vanderbilt, Yale, U of Iowa, Colorado Boulder, and Indiana Bloomington.
  3. Oh boy, I didn't realize the "waves" thing was also for interviews! Thank you for the estimated time frame though. Even if it might not be the exact time, it's helpful for me to get a general idea of when I might hear from schools. Thank you so much @latemeg. I'm rooting for you on the UChi interview! Huh, I never knew schools could also interview only some but accept the others. I'll keep that in mind.
  4. Yeah! It would be cool. Do we have any schools that overlap between us? I think we're both applying to U Wisconsin Madison but I don't remember anything else.
  5. Thanks! Ah Ruby was where I stopped but now I picked up again. I'll probably pick the same starter for my Omega Ruby run. I love seeing all of the support here. Good luck to everyone! I believe in all of you.
  6. Did the interview request arrive via email or did you have to check your status? That sounds awesome! Good luck with that studentship! I remember awhile back I saw that we had similar interests in health and picked a few of the same schools. Wishing us both luck! By the way, is one of your POIs for Yale Rene Almeling?
  7. I've been checking this place a lot but haven't been able to reply to threads in awhile. Congrats to the interviews and admits! Does anyone know what date it would be too late for me to receive an interview notice from Rutgers? It's one of my favorite schools on my list and I'm wondering when I should be worried about receiving no interview requests. I'm in the same boat right now. I've been slacking on plan B, but now I need to make sure I can find that other adventure I wouldn't mind doing if grad school applications don't pan out.
  8. While I think these tests are fun and can sometimes be a good starting point on getting to know yourself, I don't think the results are always accurate or at least they are not always stable. I myself never get my actual type from these tests (went through a whole career counseling process to figure that out). I agree that some of the questions were difficult to answer since I also interpret things differently. I would not use this test to determine what to do in life though. I just think it's useful as a start to figure yourself out. I have no idea whether these tests would say anything about the sociologists here, but I'm intrigued to see the results as they come. Also, for your example question, it makes me wonder whether the wording can be an issue. I interpreted that one as asking if you are someone who loves nature and therefore doesn't mind "getting lost" in it. Kind of like when someone gets into the flow of work/hobbies that they love. However, I can also see it as asking if you are someone who actually gets lost if you were to go through the wilderness. Hey! Another INTP! Apparently we're quite rare too so it's awesome to find another.
  9. Wow congratulations @RoxieB!! Looks like the new year is starting off great for you!
  10. @latemeg I feel the same way with the quant scores and the lack of research experience on my part. However, like everyone is saying on this thread, there's only so much that we can control and we all have our other good points too. Let's cross our fingers and hope that we can begin the new year with some good news! Finally finished my apps before the new year!! Unfortunately, I got sick, but I guess it'll force me to relax. Really loving all of the positive vibes here and hoping that everyone will welcome the new year with some good news about our apps!
  11. I'm doing the same with my video games (cool selection by the way). I'm trying to catch up on the Pokemon series, so I've been working on Pokemon Diamond, XD, and later on Omega Ruby. I'm also playing Mario Party while my sister's back from school. I was originally working on Kingdom Hearts 1.5, but then my Playstation 3 got YLOD. Also, finally done with my apps (finished before the new year)! Been trying not to think about accept/reject just yet but I'm sure reality is going to catch up soon.
  12. I'm still working on two more apps, but I'll be saving some money too and playing video games as well. Will probably be looking for plans B, C, D, E, F, G after I take a well deserved break once everything is done. What video games do you play (titles, series, or genres)? I'm also thinking of reading some sociology books related to my interests. While tailoring the SOPs, I actually found some books I did want to read, but does anyone have any other recommendations? I'm interested in books related to sociology of health and medicine, mental health, social networks, sociology of knowledge, social psychology, and any combination of these topics.
  13. I'm so glad it worked out for you. I had a feeling it was Wisconsin-Madison because a similar thing happened where I didn't have a check mark next to the official transcripts until later. I wasn't sure what to say to you before because I didn't know if I just missed the mark on my first look or not. Crossing my fingers for the both of us! Still working on applications, but I'm down to two SOPs. I'm anxiously waiting for a letter of rec writer to submit before the January deadline and fixing some other stuff for another app, but technically I just have two more to go. On another note, I just want to say I like our cohort here so far. You all seem like an awesome helpful bunch and I'm happy I decided to stop lurking.
  14. That's really cool and interesting that you got the flip side of what happens to me. Also, I think everyone still has the N so far.
  15. Nice! And thank you! I try to save a few extra days to account for things going wrong, though yesterday was really pushing it for UCSF. I'm just glad that I'm done with the December apps now and can breathe a bit knowing the next batch is due in January. Sounds awesome! I can definitely relate to feeling ready for grad school to be the next chapter in my life. I can't speak for everyone else, but I have a long list because I was told to cast a wide net by my mentor. My specific interests also crossed different areas of sociology, and it was hard to find a perfect fit encompassing all of them. Plus they say interests change, therefore, I applied to schools that fit some but not all of my interests. I would still be happy to be in all of the places I applied to, but there are some I would be more happy to go to.
  16. I'm technically a combo of everything except give up (at least not yet). I told myself that whether I get in or not, I'm going on an "adventure."
  17. Nice! Wishing all of us good luck on our apps. Oh my goodness, I can't imagine doing that many apps in one day! I'm guessing those got done by now? I think so far Iowa U was my shortest app if you don't count submitting the supplemental materials (that's why I am technically submitted but I still need the supplements for a full app). Got UCSF done and now to work on my next cluster: Iowa and Yale.
  18. I feel your pain. Some statements were definitely easier than others, but it was still quite a challenge to show how everyone and everything is connected. Glad I'm not the only one who got owned by the quant section. I like statistics too, though it's been awhile since I took a class in it. Just submitted apps for UW Madison and Indiana Bloomington (though this still requires professors to submit their recs) and I'm pretty much done with UCSF pending some small details. I'm halfway there in my apps, losing a bit of my sanity, but glad that I organized myself and my application stuff beforehand. Just one more month and I'll be free from application preparation and submission madness. How are you holding up?
  19. When I browsed the forums, I saw that Rutgers interviewed last year so I'm anticipating a Rutgers one and I do remember seeing the Yale post. Not sure if either one interviews all candidates before accepting though. I would also like to know more about interviews if anyone is more knowledgeable. In the meanwhile, you can try browsing the Fall 2017 Acceptances Interviews Rejections thread here: https://forum.thegradcafe.com/topic/85946-fall-2017-acceptancesinterviewsrejections-thread/. Search your schools and see if they did interviews last year, though I have no idea whether they will continue the same thing this cycle.
  20. I've taken this and others before and while I typically test as INFP, I'm actually INTP according to a career counselor I worked with. My F, and T are about 50/50 but after I looked into the descriptions I really am INTP. I think I just test as INFP because I developed my F so much from having done volunteer work, undergoing a health major, and great friends who've helped me. Still interesting with everyone sharing the N so far.
  21. In order of deadlines: 1. Rutgers (submitted) 2. CU Boulder (submitted) 3. UW Wisconsin (pending edits for SOP) 4. UCSF (pending edits for SOP) 5. U of Iowa (in progress) 6. Yale (in progress) 7. Indiana Bloomington (in progress) 8. UCSD (in progress) 9. U of New Mexico (in progress) 10. Vanderbilt (in progress) My confidence levels seem to rise and fall depending on which app I happen to be doing. It's usually because of how well I think I fit with the school as well as ranking. I'm not so confident with the higher ranked ones because of my lack of research experience and quant score, but I'm also hoping for the best.
  22. Still working on apps, though they're really just SOP tailoring and miscellaneous things. Submitted the two that were due on Dec. 1, but still waiting on my editor for comments for the SOPs with Dec. 15 deadline. If I don't hear soon I'm just going to do another check and just submit it. Since I consider those technically done (just have to put my SOPs in and submit them), I have 6 more apps to go. Feeling the pressure, but motivating myself with a promise to give myself a full week (possible interviews permitting) of gaming and a splurge on take out on the day I finish my last app. I also had a similar problem since my graduate health major was basically team-based learning with teams collaborating on every paper. I just used my undergraduate senior thesis and/or an excerpt of a research methods paper since I didn't have any publications either. Some of my schools required two papers which is why there is the and/or. I forgot which one, but I remembered one school saying they wanted a single authored paper. Also, take this with a grain of salt, but if it helps, I spoke with some professors and they seemed to either not care or were interested in my different background (an uncommon health field), so don't think having a non sociology background will hurt you. You can try using it instead as a strength and show how you are adding to the diversity of the school and field. So glad I'm not alone in the Thursday submission thing. We can do this!
  23. This thread helped me too so I hope my records help. 8/7/17 PowerPrep 1 153 V 151 Q 304 8/14/17 Manhattan Prep 1 161 V 152 Q 313 8/23/17 Manhattan Prep 2 159 V 158 Q 317 Average: 157.67 V 153.67 Q 311.33 8/28/17 Actual: 162 V (91%) 156 Q (62%) 5 AW (93%) 318 10/3/17 Manhattan Prep 3 158 V 157 Q 315 10/10/17 Manhattan Prep 4 162 V 155 Q 317 10/17/17 Manhattan Prep 5 158 V 158 Q 316 10/24/17 PowerPrep 2 159 V 158 Q 317 Average: 159.25 V 157 Q 316.25 10/31/17 Actual: 164 V (94%) 156 Q (62%) 5.5 AW (98%) 320 Disappointed that I didn’t improve for Quant, but really happy about my verbal and AW scores plus the fact that I just made 320 combined. I did notice that my second take appeared to be much harder than my first take. On my second take I got an experimental verbal but everything looked equally hard so I couldn’t tell which one was the “fake.” I seriously thought I was bombing until I got the score. My first math section in take 2 felt really hard, but my second felt too easy so I knew I bombed the first math section. My takeaways: - Magoosh and Manhattan combined did the trick for me and doing the writing portions during my practice runs was enough studying for the writing section. - I definitely felt like Manhattan’s Verbal portions are not very representative but they get the job done. I really didn’t think their Data Based Questions were accurate and it was a pain to scroll for them. Their math questions were hard but good practice. - Magoosh was my go to for the verbal questions and for getting conceptual understanding behind the math that I didn’t take since high school. Their flashcards were definitely the MVPs for my GREs. My practice scores shot up fr take 1 to take 2 on those alone. However, that’s because my weakness was vocab and my strength was Reading comp. - At first I tried using the Magoosh schedules but I realized I needed to create my own. Don’t be afraid to do your own thing! I realized that I am the type of person that needs to drill the math in, so I watched the Magoosh videos and then did the Manhattan 5lb boom problems on that topic. When I tried doing the random questions, I couldn’t get the concepts and remember the strategies so I realized I needed to drill them in my head through problems in order to get it. Not everyone needs this though. - I also found vocabulary.com really useful. I believe the Barron’s 500 GRE words are a list and you can study a list in a game format. What I love about vocabulary.com is that they ask you about the word in different ways—like finding opposites and filling in the blank—in order to make sure you understand the concept. - the first trial was a bit demoralizing but it also spurred me to actually get serious with studying. I also think the low score was because it was not done in test conditions. This motivated me to find a place. I pretty much used my local community college library so that I can also practice “going to the test site” along with familiarizing myself with a new space. - If you get distracted easily like I do, ask your test centers and see if they offer ear plugs and sound canceling headphones. I used both and they were very helpful for my concentration. Im just really happy to be done with this thing and hope I get in so I don’t have to take it again ever!
  24. Hi everyone! I finally caved in and decided to not be a lurker anymore. This will be my first application cycle. My interests are medical sociology, mental health, sociology of knowledge, science and technology studies, and social psychology. The schools I’m applying to are (in no particular order): U of Iowa, UW-Madison, Indiana Bloomington, Rutgers, CU Boulder, UCSF, UCSD, Yale, Vanderbilt, U of New Mexico. GRE: 164V, 156Q, 5.5AW GPA: 3.9 Social sciences major who also did graduate work in a health field I already submitted the applications to Rutgers and CU Boulder and I’m nearly done with UW-Madison. I can’t wait until apps are done. I’m really excited but also nervous. Good luck to everyone applying!
