  1. Got accepted to a phd program in Canada last year, now doing my phd there. Wish you guys best of luck this year!
  2. Has anyone heard from University of Alberta and/or University of Calgary? I got an email from the sociology department of Calgary in late January, which requested more documents from me. Since then I have not been hearing from either school.
  3. Emailed to BU sociology department. All offers are out, waitlisted people will hear by April, and I'm not even waitlisted.
  4. Just saw another Boston U acceptance on board. It indicates the acceptance date was 23 Feb, same as the previous one. Should I assume most or all acceptances have been sent out? Congrats anyway!
  5. Saw a Boston U accetpance on board. Anyone wanna claim it? Freaking out it is my last hope.
  6. Really?! I just emailed them. They said the review process is still in the final stage and will soon be completed. When did your friend get accepted?
  7. Have anyone heard from boston U? It has been uncharacteristically silent.
  8. application status of Toronto changed to "decision made," assuming rejection since no email whatsoever so far
  9. I guess princeton has already sent all the offers and official rejection will be out this week. The number of admits on board is similar to the size of cohort last year as shown on their website. My last hope is boston U, but I think my chance getting there is too low.
  10. Plus, as the POI said, their school is getting less money so they are admitting very small cohort. I think this is and will be a common problem of a lot of schools within these two to three years.
  11. Emailed to a POI at U of Connecticut I personally know. Offers are already out, and I am not one of those admitted.
  12. Just got an email from harvard gsas instructing me to check portal. Rejected.
  13. Just checked results in the last two years, harvard, yale, and boston university will probably send their unofficial acceptance within this week. So nervous now!
  14. Saw another princeton acceptance on board. Congrats! Any princeton admits want to share the detail of how they got the offer? Thanks!
  15. Not so related to this thread, but I saw several times on the result board a result named "Sexy chinese girl" Is thegradcafe's site now being attacked or hacked?
  16. Hi pinoysoc, I don't know whether this can help you feel better. I remember a few months ago when I was searching GRE averages of various schools, I found a document (something like guidelines of phd application) written by Duke sociology department. The document mentioned they once admitted someone with both verbal and quant scores lower than 150 (if I remember correctly). They also said they had accepted someone with 3.2 (or 3.3, I forgot) gpa.
  17. Congrats to all those beautiful green acceptance labels! Just want to ask you guys a question. Is it normal for schools like harvard to send their applicants emails about potential scholarship information disregarding application status? Like yesterday I got an email from harvard scholarship committee, saying that there is a scholarship for those international students from my home region, and they strongly recommend me to apply asap since the deadline will be on early march. The email stated explicitly that it has nothing to do with application status, and is just a piece of information. But I wonder if they would even waste their time sending such emails to all applicants when the application status is still uncertain. Is there any possibility that this kind of emails would only be sent to shortlisted applicants? (though this sounds stupid to me either, but a guy like me still hearing nothing whatsoever is now very sensitive to whatever email.) Thanks!
  18. Thank you so much for your sharing!! I feel little hope for getting into Toronto now. My GRE score is much lower than yours (154 V, 158 Q, 4A). I got a BA and MPhil in sociology (also a research master degree requiring written thesis under supervision of faculty member). I found that last year there were some acceptances off the wait-list in April. But I have always been the kind of person that doesn't have much luck to be waitlisted, not to say getting off the waitlist. This is my first round of application. Maybe next year I gotta improve my GRE before I start my application.
  19. Was the email from the department or poi? I emailed to the department yesterday but they have not replied. I think I can assume rejection. Anyway, big congrats!! Would you mind sharing your profile to me? Thanks!
  20. Anyone wanna claim the U of Toronto acceptance? I applied to U of T too. I'm freaking out right now I still got nothing.
  21. Oh, I always thought grad school won't answer questions about scores and gpa as they seem to be "sensitive." Before starting my application, I had done some estimation on the cut off scores and gpa and added this (totally stupid) estimation into my consideration of school choices. Berkeley was a rather straightforward reference as their sociology department mentioned average gre and gpa on their webpage. My estimation goes like this: Berkeley's admitted students' average gre was 161 verbal, 154 quant, 5 aw, and gpa 3.82 as this is average, the cut off should be lower than that, without any evidence and informed standard I simply roughly guess the cut off would be like 151-155 verbal, 144-149 quant, 4-4.5 aw, and 3.7-3.75 gpa (i.e. about 5 to 10 scores below the average verbal and quant, 0.5 to 1 mark below average aw, and a gpa somewhere higher than 3.5 and not significantly lower than 3.8) And since Berkeley is a top 10 school in sociology so I thought I would at least get a chance to be considered after the cut off in some top 10 to 20 schools if I got scores and gpa falling into these ranges. But after visiting thegradcafe seeing all the acceptance results I now know I f__ked up my apps with all these nonsense and stupid estimations.
  22. Some of my colleagues have received interview invitations in these few days, and I still got nothing (though they are not applying to sociology programs). I feel so bad right now.
