  1. I remember a few hours after my submission I got an email from the BU gsas saying they received my app and had forwarded to the department. (I submitted in late Dec.) My impression is that the app system was not so user friendly. Like, they provide very limited choices of degree types in the background section but don't allow me to type in manually. My bachelor's degree is "bachelor of social sciences," and my master's degree is MPhil, a british style research master's degree. But I could not find any of them and had to fill in something like "other master degree" and "other bachelor." I have no idea whether this would do harm to my apps. Sigh...
  2. My routine in Jan (probably also in Feb) 1. Go back to my office in the morning 2. Switch on the desktop and check my apps and see the Submitted status 3. Check gradcafe 4. Buy a cup of coffee and start to work with very loose attention, don't even know what the hell I am doing 5. Lunch with my colleagues and answer "No" or "Nothing" in response to their question "Any news?" every day 6. Before leaving my office in the evening, see Submitted again 7. Back to home, Video game till 2am as I can't sleep
  3. Congrats to the UCSB acceptance! Anyone wanna claim it?
  4. Glad to see another BU sociology applicant. I'm waiting for their decision too! (I got undergrad gpa much lower than yours, 3.70, and low GRE too, all 60 something percentile) Don't worry, good news always comes late, perhaps you will hear something exciting in Feb.
  5. Thanks for the comments! I didn't have much time to prepare for the GRE, I was too busy doing interviews and observations over the last 5-6 months. I'm hoping next year I can do better (assuming I won't get any offer this time). Anyway, wish you guys all get accepted!
  6. Hi everyone I am new to thegradcafe and an international applicant from Hong Kong. I just want to look for some comments on my profile. I got my BA and British-style MPhil degrees from a not so famous university in HK, both in sociology. My undergrad overall gpa was 3.70. The school doesn't give any "majoy gpa," but I took like 20 sociology courses during my 3-year undergrad with only 2 of them being not in A range grades. I don't have a GPA for my MPhil degree. It's more focused on independent research and thesis writing under supervision of a faculty member, and although I had to take some courses, those courses only had pass or fail result. After completing my MPhil I've been working as RA in another University in HK, which is ranked like top 30 to 40 globally and top 5 in Asia. I have co-authored two articles with my boss, the professor in charge of the research project I'm assisting. One submitted to a regional peer reviewed journal (me being the 2nd author) and one submitted to a University press in HK as a book chapter (me being the first author). Both are under review. I have 7 years of community services in 4 different NGOs, all about providing social services to impoverished immigrants. My research interests therefore relate closely to immigrant incorporation, citizenship, social (ethnic, gender, and class) boundaries, xenophobia, etc. (My SOP is mainly about how these experiences led me to study theories and empirical researches relating to immigrants during my undergrad, to formulate my own research in immigrant incorporation during MPhil, and how this process generates new research questions that I wanna answer pursuing a PhD.) I got a really really bad GRE result, 154 V, 158 Q, 4 A, and kind of a moderate toefl result, total 104, reading 29, listening 28, speaking 22, writing 25 But my LORs should be strong (I assume), as I have very good relationship with all faculty members in my alma mater, and they always say to different people that I am one of the best and outstanding students in the department (though it can be some kind of "politeness" to me only), and all my LORs are from them. School applied this year: harvard, princeton, yale, toronto, boston U, UConn, all Sociology phD program Is my profile too bad for applying to these schools? Nice if I can hear some comments from you guys! Thanks!
