  1. I do full name (no title) throughout, but I don't think it matters!
  2. I'm down! What topic/method? I'm submitting a formal theory essay but I'd feel qualified to give feedback on anything comparative or quant
  3. Thank you all for the great suggestions! As things currently stand I do not plan to apply to any more schools this round, but if I were to have to reapply next year, I will definitely keep these in mind.
  4. My undergrad was in political science, but I mainly did quantitative work and took a few courses in econ and methods, including math. Two of my letters come from formal theory professors. Unfortunately Columbia isn't taking applications this year!
  5. Thanks, those are all very fair points. I do not have a huge math background but I think I have a good reason (I simply could not have taken any more classed than I did, the Italian curriculum is very rigid); none of those programs strictly require a lot of math so I hope it won't be a disqualifying factor (though I am aware that they are very long shots). My LORs are from well-known professors who in turn know me quite well. I am aware that the market is very tight, though places like Rochester and NYU are quite specialized in formal theory so I hope they are looking for some students in that area!
  6. This is fantastic, thanks! It appears that most schools send out admissions before rejections -- rather anxiety inducing!
  7. Hey all, I thought I would add my profile mainly for posterity's sake, but also to look for feedback (mainly hoping for reassurance, but would mostly benefit from heads-ups!). I've also very much enjoyed looking at people's profiles over the years so I thought I'd do my part now that the dreaded application season has finally come! Undergrad: Italian university (GPA around 3.9 on a 4.0 scale); Grad: MPhil at Oxford (comparative politics); Main interests: "pure" formal theory, with some comparative politics in the mix; GRE: 164V/170Q/5.0AWA (planning to send also to GRE-optional programs); Research experience: masters thesis, plus worked as an RA at Oxford and as an undergrad on several projects (both formal theory and voting behavior); Writing sample: a formal model I wrote pretty much specifically for this application round, haven't received any feedback from professors but I think it's relatively strong; Schools: Stanford GSB, Chicago Harris, Yale, Princeton, NYU, Emory, Rochester, Berkeley, LSE. I feel like I'm applying broadly enough, although it's certainly an ambitious list. I am mainly worried that this year will be incredibly tight, but I'm also trying not to overthink things too much.
  8. Duke suspended applications last year, so that might explain the confusion!
  9. I'd try retaking if you want to send it to GRE-optional places, but the soft cutoff tends to be 160 for most non-quant places and you cleared that, so it's up to you really. And AWA doesn't seem to carry much weight (they can see how you write from SoP and sample).
  10. In addition to US schools, you should consider Oxford -- they offer quite a few scholarships (although many are for EU/UK students).
  11. You might find this old thread very useful:
  12. I wouldn't send them to be honest. Those scores would be unlikely to help your application in a normal year, and this year there will be an additional selection effect where those who send scores will mostly have very good ones.
  13. What "bubble"? Are there not going to be people studying at university in the future? Are none of those people going to be studying political science? What exactly will bring about the collapse of the market? I'm genuinely curious.
  14. I agree with terefere in that it would probably wise to retake the GRE and push the Q at least above 160.
  15. You should probably apply to a few top PhDs this cycle, along with some good masters programs. Keep your options open, you never know. Definitely try to get in touch with some polisci profs before you apply though.
  16. You look pretty good, especially if you're not applying to do quant. However I highly recommend that you consider applying to some top programs as well: some of them are very methodologically diverse and your interests might change over time. A CHYMPS acceptance might change how much you "vibe" with what they do there!
  17. Most programs have opened applications so frankly I don't believe that there will be a lot of surprises come October.
  18. I would advise against submitting them. That quant is going to do more harm than good, especially considering that the places that do not require the GRE will mostly receive very high scores. You should ask your recommenders to contextualize your GPA in their letters, it will be a better signal than the GRE.
  19. Would that look better than just sending my high-quant score? I don't want to signal inconsistency.
  20. Thanks! Where do I check if a school that I’m applying to does that?
  21. I took the GRE twice: the first time, I got a perfect Verbal (170) but a Quant in the mid-low 160s; the second time the opposite score, a perfect Quant (170) but in Verbal I got the same score as my first Quant. Luckily, due to how the GRE is scored, the second test was above the 90th percentile for both (not true for the first as you need a higher score in Q than V to make it to the 90th percentile). Here's my question: I want to apply to very quant-heavy programs, so I suppose that the Quant matters more than the Verbal. I am also not a native English speaker, so it is possible that my not-so-perfect Verbal will be discounted even further. However, I wonder if it would make sense for me to send both test scores, as I was quite happy with my first Verbal. However, I'd rather adcomms think I'm (consistently) good at math and a bit less good at verbal than inconsistently good at math. Thoughts? Am I overthinking this?
  22. Interesting. I doubt that their decision was based on ESRC funding because I know that they're still processing my application...
  23. Thank you - you were right. I just received the official offer from the department, as well as a fat L from Nuffield. Oh well. Crossing my fingers for other sources of funding.
