  1. I mean, clearly I was being a little harsh by calling them a terrible person. But I’ve found GC so comforting and inspiring, so I found the tone of the post a bit offensive. Y’all have picked me up on my worst days and celebrated with me on some of my best days. Nobody has ever made me feel insignificant or trivial on this forum, and then somebody posted that trash. I guess if you get into all those school you wouldn’t understand the anxiety of other people trying to get into ANY of their schools. /sigh.
  2. That most recent Yale acceptance ending in “Go cleanse yourself!” is so obnoxious. You just know that person is an entitled asshole. I hate it when terrible people have the world at their feet.
  3. Hi! I am a 19th century Americanist. I work mostly with the Transcendentalist movement, particularly Thoreau. I'm broadening my scope a bit-- the work I was doing before getting accepted this round was very specific.
  4. You know, I almost applied to BU! But the faculty member that I was dying to work with just retired. Maybe they’re just running a bit behind this year? I don’t know when they usually post, but they could have a new administration or DGS. Anything could happen! If this year has taught me anything, it’s that it’s definitely not over until the rejection is in your inbox.
  5. Congrats to all the Penn + Connecticut + Ann Arbor admits! Y’all are on fire! ?
  6. Thanks for your response. I think you're right, but I really don't want you to be! I'd love to give her enough time to hire someone and let me do the training. But you're probably right, HR will probably take over and I'll be out of a job earlier than I'm prepared for.
  7. It depends where you got in and how small the schools are. It's a six year move, but you can always return to the city after! Also, will any of us really have much time to enjoy a city?! I don't have any real advice for you, but I wish you the best!
  8. Hi! Congrats! I think— and others should correct me if I’m wrong— that unranked waitlists are use to ensure that there is a diverse cohort composition. I’m 19th century American, so if the person the said yes to declines their offer, then they would select someone from the waitlist for 19th century American. I doubt it’s always 1:1 like that, but they do try to keep cohorts balanced.
  9. Waitlisted at UNC Chapel Hill!!!!!! They rejected me last year.
  10. My personal question is this: I work with an amazing supervisor at my full-time job. She surprised me with a promotion at the end of November, so I didn't have the opportunity to explain that I could be leaving-- HR had already approved it and she had already spent time making it happen. Now I want to do right by her. We're a two person unit, so my leaving will be a burden on her. I'd like to give long notice, but EVERYTHING I've read said that anything longer than four weeks is self-destructive. What are your plans, GCers?
  11. I wanted to start a thread for questions about transitions with work, family, living, lifestyle, climate, and friends after being accepted into a program.
  12. !!!!!!!!!!!!!! YES! I'm so excited for you! This is amazing! You so deserve this!
  13. I’m so excited for you! Riverside is so cool. The faculty there are doing some really interesting research. CONGRATS! Also, I think we applied to a bunch of the same schools ?
  14. Waitlisted at Penn State. They have an odd structure to their program. They want me to redo my MA (not uncommon for PhD programs). Despite having an MA from a comparable institution, if admitted, I will be required to reapply to the PhD program after completing the second year. Interesting! Grateful they are considering me.
  15. Anyone want to claim the Riverside acceptance & satisfy my curiosity?
  16. This happened to me this season too on one application. It’s dissapointing. One the bright side, they didn’t reject you! There was an error in your file, which in a perfect world you might have caught. But it’s not a perfect world and you were busy pouring your heart and soul into your applications. Best of luck to you! Please do not be so down on yourself ?
  17. Thanks @M(allthevowels)H and @punctilious! Why am I always out of reactions? There's so much exciting news on this board today! I love it! Y'all are such talented humans.
  18. Hi @Fineanddandy! Welcome to the community-- we're delighted to have you! I've talked about the you-only-need-one mentality elsewhere on the forum. It's a wonderful mentality and one that I have cultivated. I was right where you are for over a year. I was shut out last season and absolutely heartbroken. I can see how you would be frustrated by some of the posts here, but it helps to think of it this way: everyone on here has a different story. Some are doing victory laps because it's their third season and they finally have a slew of offers. Some people have several offers, but maybe the funding options on the offers that have come in aren't what they need them to be. In other cases, they've worked their asses off on their research, and every rejection of their research is a personal blow. My research is so personal. I've been working on one very specific subject for three years. While I'm grateful that I have two offers, it's sometimes hard to keep everything in perspective when scholars you admire review your life's work and deem it unworthy/uninteresting/ don't want to work with you. So much about this process is about "fit." That's what makes it so painful. You'll get in somewhere. There's a whole community of people rooting for you! @a_sort_of_fractious_angel--- what a beautiful response! I, too, opted out of gradcafe for awhile after the last round, although I was just a lurker.
  19. I just received an email stating that I waitlisted at Penn State. I had that one pegged as “in the abyss.”
  20. Congrats @Crow T. Robot! That is such incredible news!?⚡️
  21. Thank you! You make an excellent point about shoes. Flats it is!
  22. All I can offer is my own personal experience. I have had two offers. Both acceptance letters or emails addressed this specifically. One said that airfare, hotel, and two dinners would be covered. The other email said that I would be staying with a current student and if I had difficulty funding my travel I could contact the graduate coordinator. So if they didn’t specifically mention funding for travel, that puts you in an awkward position.
  23. So I have a few weeks before my first recruitment activities. What is the attire like for these things? Confession: I don’t own a suit. I’m reviewing my research (I haven’t meaningfully engaged with it since September, for obvious reasons), reviewing my SOP, reading monographs authored by my POIs, prepping questions about TA responsibilities + daily life. What else do I need to do? I feel like I’m overlooking something.
