  1. Got rejected by Oxford (I knew it was going to happen though, but wanted to try my chances) :)

Just reapplied for an MLitt at St Andrews University in Scotland. I really hope I can get into a European masters program in case I can't secure funding for a US/Canadian program.

    decisions ... decisions ...

Anybody here apply to Oxford's MPhil or MSt program in Philosophical Theology? I applied to both but have yet to hear from either.

I applied to Oxford but for an MTh. However, I didn't hear anything yet either. I expect an answer by end of April.

UK schools have a different system of admissions. Also, some schools have their deadlines open for a lot more time than the US schools.

    When did you apply?

I have what might be a dumb question, will we be getting an email from YDS or should we be checking the application status on the application page? I'm currently checking the application status page and it's not saying anything, but where should i be looking for the status update? all the page says is the items they've received

I can only assume that their process is similar to other schools. That is, they will most likely email us with the decisions first and your application status should change a few minutes/hours later ... At least that was my experience with other schools ...

I applied to the MAR in Philosophy. I am interested in both analytic and continental philosophy of religion, as well as the history of philosophy and historical theology after Kant. Thus, I felt that YDS offered something unique to my particular interests in both philosophy and theology. I wasn't trying to pitch anything really profound in my SOP, and my writing sample wasn't a hardcore analytic piece. My advisors encouraged me to be thorough and honest and not to try to "blow them away" with something profound. I tried to be honest in my desire and intentions in the program. Don't know if that advice was correct, but I guess I will find out tomorrow!

Any school doing contemporary theology will--to some extent--interact with Continental philosophy. Also, I don't buy into the myth about Yale necessarily being partial to analytic. I met two really cool Yale MAR Philosophy students doing work in Phenomenology, if that makes you feel any better.

    Best of luck to you!

Thank you! Yep, I'm interested in both analytic and continental too. At the time when I wrote the proposal, I just felt compelled to write something on continental, more specifically on phenomenology. It's awesome that there are students doing Phenomenology work at YDS. It really gives me more peace now (to some degree).

    Best of luck everyone!

It seems like whenever I've applied to anything in my life, I always get a courteous letter explaining to me that I'm one of the finest human beings ever, but that unfortunately, that year was the most competitive year in human history, and that a whole host of even finer human beings applied, so they can't let me in--despite my superlative fineness.  For once in my life, I'd like to get a letter detailing that, although I'm super mediocre and have little talent to speak of, the applicant pool was filled with even bigger losers, so the institution has been forced to approve my lousy application under protest.  I'd much prefer the latter to the former.  No such luck as yet.

    @rejectedndejected @kaaat

I applied for the MARc in Philosophy (Philosophical Theology/Philosophy of Religion). I really hope my proposal was unique/interesting enough to get me in. Though it focused a little bit on continental philosophy, after doing some research, I found out that Yale is not a big fan of continental philosophy and rather prefers analytic. But that is within their philosophy department, which I really hope does not apply too much to their Divinity department.

But yes, I'm surprised there's not much activity on the forum the night before. What everyone else's proposals on? What do you wish you could have done or not? C'mon people ... share the love, struggle, nerves ... we are all in the same boat (at least until tomorrow) :) ...

Did you apply by the priority deadline? If so, it seems like the standard notification time is February. Last year I hadn't heard back from BU by this point, and the admissions office didn't answer my emails. By late March, I had to make a decision to accept or turn down an offer from Union. I emailed the dean at BU STH and she responded back right away expressing concern. Long story short, they notified me the next day of my acceptance and apologized, saying I was accepted weeks previously but the file got lost...

Not trying to make you nervous, but may be worth a phone call/email. I'm at BU now (M.Div) and love it, but the application process was messy to say the least.

@avocet thanks for the info. I'm emailing them now. :)

How's the theological education at BU? Do you take advantage of the other schools from the  BTI consortium? Would love some insights on the school :)

  7. Hey, congrats to everyone who made it into HDS!

Hands up those who waiting for YDS decisions on Thursday! :)

Also, is it normal that I didn't hear from Boston University yet? I applied to their MTS program but no word from them---though, some people from here got their decisions already ...

I still want to hear back from the other schools first (such as YDS and HDS), but Duke is the top school for me that I've gotten into so far. I'm thrilled with it. They offered me full funding, which was pretty shocking.

Vanderbilt sent out emails tonight to everyone stating that they thank us for our patience and ask us to continue waiting. lol

    wow! that's awesome! Congrats!

Just as a heads up to others who are curious about who is hearing back from who...

I heard back from Boston U at the beginning of February (got accepted and was offered possibility of free tuition) and I got a phone call from Emory/Candler earlier this week congratulating me on an acceptance (no financial aid mentioned yet).

Exciting times! Did anyone else get into Emory or Boston?

    @MattSolo

Thanks for the heads up! Seems like you applied to many of the schools I also applied. Any preference on which you'd pick if you were to get accepted in all your top 5 picks?

Rabbit, thank you for your input, it is greatly appreciated. I was hoping that my experience and my area of interest (the syncretic relationship between Christianity and Native culture) would separate myself from other applicants. I visited three of the schools mentioned and I have to say, I think my visits and my specific area of interest were fairly well received.

On a couple of the applications there were sections to explain academic records, given that so much time had passed since my last degree, and given that I was a practicing attorney for over 20 years, I thought it would be a bit gratuitous to make such explanations — hope I was right!

Again, thanks and keeping my fingers crossed for the next several weeks.

    Hi @Boolakanaka

I second what @Rabbit Run said.

You are definitely a strong applicant. Given that so much time has passed since you finished school, I doubt they will care much for your GPA.
Your experience and proposal/interest of study is what they will look at. At the end of the day, GPA is the only way for Graduate Schools to measure the capability of (inexperienced) undergraduate students. I know quite a few people that got into top schools with GPA that was below the required minimum--however, they had experience and skills that made up for the "low" GPA.

Let us know where you end up. I look forward to hearing the good news!

I was accepted into PTS's M.Div program on Friday - very exciting. I'm still working through the financial aid offer. They sent two emails: one was a plain acceptance letter encouraging me to apply for aid and one financial aid letter notifying me of a scholarship that I've been offered. There was no mention of grant money but it did say that the scholarship I received was not necessarily the only one I could/will receive. To complicate things further, the particular scholarship I was offered makes me eligible for additional scholarships  - though I have no idea when I'll find out if I've been selected for those (or whether I would have been notified already if I had been selected). Because I was left with a ton of questions, I responded to the scholarship email asking for clarification. They didn't answer the question, rather, they set up a call with the head of financial aid. I'll be speaking with him on Wednesday to hopefully clear this up.

I have not reported my acceptance on results, as I'd like to wait until I understand my full funding offer. I think this will be more useful to those who depend on the results search for guidance!

    Congratulations @JDD !!! I'm super happy you got into Princeton !! :D

I'm assuming you're asking based on where you've been admitted. I don't know anything about Dublin City, but if you're trying to decide between Duke and Fuller, choose Duke. I went to Fuller, and while I don't necessarily regret my time there or anything (I got into a good PhD program from there), if I had known more about div schools/seminaries, I likely would've gone somewhere else. If you are looking to go on to a PhD program, Duke will better prepare you for that. The degree name doesn't really matter that much. You need to think about which program is going to help you narrow in on a possible dissertation topic and be rigorous enough to give you the tools you need to succeed in a PhD program.

    @marXian Thanks for your advice.

I had my interview with PTS on Friday. I spoke with their head of admissions over the phone (we couldn't get Skype to work) for about 30 mins. The conversation was pleasant and very helpful, as he was able to give me a very clear picture of what PTS is all about and how I might fit. It only served to reinforce what I already liked about PTS.

He mentioned that PTS is experiencing a very bizarre situation currently: close to 1/3 of the staff are currently on sabbatical. He said they hadn't planned this, but it meant that every professor is  extremely busy and therefore can't necessarily provide all of the resources to applicants that PTS is accustomed to. He mentioned that the admissions committee should be meeting at least once a month to review and decide on current applicants (my app being among those) and that they pride themselves on being able to provide a response quickly.

Still, I didn't feel comfortable trying to pin him down on an exact date as to when current applicants might expect a response. My guess is that some of the first Fall 2018 decisions will go out in the next 2 weeks - at least for M.Div applicants.

If anyone else has had interviews at either PTS or other schools, do let the rest of us know about your experience!

    @JDD

That's awesome bro! I hope everything goes well!

Also, got an email from Fuller to let me know that I was accepted. Glad that I have at least 2 options from where I can choose now. But still waiting for others to get back to me.

  14. @LotusFlower

Yes. My backup option is to go back home to Dublin, Ireland.

I applied to an M.A. (Theology) at Dublin City University. I was fortunate to meet a professor from there and he recommended the course. He is a very good scholar in the field of what I want to study in the future, and he agreed that I could study under him if I choose to go back. Therefore, I would say that my backup options are: Regent, Wycliffe, Fuller and Dublin City University (DCU).

    I like your options though.

Best of luck to all, and I really hope we all get our top picks.

I mentioned a lot of this in another thread, but I'd love to help any lurkers who may have similar situations:

    GPA: 4.0 - Public Relations &Mass Communication B.S.

I've applied for the M.Div program at all schools listed.

    Schools:

    • Fuller Seminary - Accepted on Jan. 13 , no word on scholarships yet. I'm told to expect a letter in April
    • Yale Divinity School - doesn't announce until March 15
    • Duke Divinity School - Waiting, no word on when I'll hear back, but the results section would have me believe mid-February
    • Princeton Seminary - Waiting, with an interview scheduled for Friday.

Good luck to my fellow applicants, we're all in this together.

    Nice!

Forgot to mention that I also applied to Fuller too. But no word from them as of yet.

    Good luck in your interview!

Funding for international students at the Master's level is going to be minimal, you will almost certainly depend on loans in order to complete a Master's degree in the US.

Unfortunately, given the schools that you're applying to in the US - your undergraduate degree being from Moody won't cut you any favors, mainstream divinity schools in the US do not look upon Moody favorably. Duke is an exceptional school and if you do well there, it will open a lot of doors for you.

You're going to come across the same funding issues in Canada and UK but that is also dependent upon your citizenship.

@xypathos thanks for your info. Yeah, I know that Moody falls under the conservative side of the spectrum. However, it is a great school to get started in your theological and biblical education.

I kind of figured out that already, but I was just trying to see if there are any options that may not be available to the general public (no harm in asking, right?) :)

  17. USA

    • Yale Div - MARc Philosophical Theology/Philosophy of Religion (waiting)
    • Duke Div - MTS (accepted w/ 25% funding) - any idea how to get more? :)
    • Wake Forest Div -  MDiv (rejected) - was surprised to find out I was rejected :(
    • BU SoT - MTS (waiting)

    Canada

    • Wycliffe College (UofT) - MTS (waiting)

  18. Hey all,

Starting this thread to help each other and let one another know where we applied, got accepted, denied or wait-listed. Also feel free to provide any other information such as funding, choosing one school over another, reasons why rejecting etc.

Here is my list of applications and updates so far:

    • Regent College - MTS (waiting)

    • U of Cambridge - MPhil in Theology, Religion, and Philosophy of Religion (waiting)
    • U Of Edinburgh - MPhil (waiting)
    • U of St. Andrews - MTh (rejected)

I'm also an international student, graduating with a B.A. in Theology from the historic Moody Bible Institute (Chicago, IL)
Any ideas of funding available for international students? The idea of a loan kind of scares me.

    Best of luck everyone!
