Applying to Munk 2019, NPSIA, GSPIA, BSIA etc.
lily22 replied to snowflake96's topic in Government Affairs Forum
I was put on the waitlist last year and I emailed the old MGA coordinator a ton for updates (at least once a month). They probably got annoyed with me but it was worth it to email them because they were very realistic with my chances, and their responses allowed me to move on from the program and start looking for a job. They flat out told me that they over-admitted students -- they admitted 120 students instead of 80 -- and they would only start to accept off the waitlist if the number dropped back to 80. They also told me there were still another 80 other students ON the waitlist. The chances of being admitted off the waitlist were thus slim to none and I was encouraged to pursue other avenues and reapply the next year. Even if they can't tell you your chances (re: rankings), they may be able to be honest with you in the likelihood of the waitlist opening up anytime soon.- 565 replies

Has anyone who was admitted to Munk accepted their offer yet? Would anyone be interested in forming a group on FB? I have so many questions & figured maybe students could share their knowledge with each other- 565 replies

I would start planning the gap year -- last year, some students got in off the waitlist after 2 weeks, and some got in around June, and others in August. My friend who went to Munk got into the MGA off the waitlist 2 weeks before school started. I would at least wait until the deadline to accept (April 16th) but I think it's important to plan just in case. Also, Munk is pretty open about the number of students they admit vs. waitlist. Last year, they admitted 110 and waitlisted 80 people. I'm sure you can ask them what stats are this year.- 565 replies

In previous years, they've notified applicants over 5-6 days (e.g. in rounds)! Plus, "many people" only pertains to the amount of folks who posted on this forum. There are still 80 spots in the program and we don't know how many others have or have not heard back!. I would still wait it out Plus, you could always contact Munk and ask if all acceptances have gone out already or not. Rooting for you!!- 565 replies

I’m not sure when you have to get back to GSPIA by, but the program coordinator at Munk told my friend that all students would be notified of the status of their application within the next few days. Many acceptances have already gone out from Munk yesterday and it’s not in alphabetical order. I would wait it out a bit longer if you can — you should hear back from Munk soon.- 565 replies

Wow well that would be super embarrassing on my end if I wasn't actually invited to the program as I told my entire family about my acorn status and have been secretly planning my future at Munk for the next two years...- 565 replies

Here you go I wouldn’t be anxious - most students don’t have their acorn updated until after they receive an email acceptance! Not quite sure why Munk does it to some students and not others, but your acorn not being updated is NOT an indicator that you didn’t get in. Rooting for you!!- 565 replies

Nope! When you first log in, there are four white boxes that show up on your home page. They say "Today's Timetable," "Key Sessional Dates," "Academics," and "Finances." Most people will see the following blurb under the "Academics" box: Academics You do not have any enrolled courses for 2019 Winter. Enrol & Manage - Review your registration status, courses and programs. Registrar, External link - Your first-stop whenever you have questions, concerns or are facing issues that are getting in the way of your success. If you applied to a program, it will also say "Degree Registration Status." If you were invited, it would say program name and the word "invited" beside it in the Academics box.- 565 replies

It is under the big "ACADEMICS" header. I was also accepted (officially, received an email) into another UofT program (2nd choice if I didn't get into Munk) and it also says "invited" beside it. I really really wouldn't worry if your ACORN doesn't update. I know friends in the program and the majority of them said their ACORN did not update until after the official emails went out.- 565 replies

OMG I also have 'invited' on my ACORN status for Munk's MGA!!! I was waitlisted last year and my acorn never updated so this is such an exciting moment for me!!! My last name starts with an S btw and I submitted my application on Jan. 5th (did not submit it super early). !!!! I'm so confused that they are tight-lipped about it?? Do I tell my friends and family I got in?? Lol But also yes, a lot of people who got into the program last year did not have their ACORN updated until official acceptances went out. So if yours hasn't been updated, I would not be worried!! I have no idea why they decide to update some and not others.- 565 replies

That's super frustrating considering they have pushed back the deadline every year. Two years ago it was in February, then it was in mid-March, and now end of March or early April? That's way too late...- 565 replies

Munk acceptances didn't come out for most people last year until at least March 9th, and then others heard back from the waitlist on March 13th. I think most will hear back next week.- 565 replies

I did the exact same! I used the same references. One of my profs I was very close with and he actually showed me his letter and it was very strong (last year), but I could just tell that the other prof used a super generic letter last year because he was pressed for time. This year, I made sure to express to that prof how much his courses influenced my professional goals etc etc and when he submitted the letter, he let me know that a "very strong letter" had been submitted. Hopefully that helps! I also made my letter of intent a lot stronger and more research-focused rather than personal and fluffy. I don't think Munk or any other grad school for that matter will give you a legitimate or genuine response when you ask for feedback. It's almost always "your app was good but we just had a really competitive pool this year." Ugh -- but then tell me why my app was not as competitive as the other applicants in the pool! They said the same thing to me so that's why I decided to reach out to a professor who taught a course for the MGA and I asked to go for a coffee. He was in my line of research and I wanted to chat about career prospects in the field, but I also brought up my application and what I suspected went wrong, and what I could do to be a stronger applicant. He gave me some helpful advice (e.g. agreed that he thinks my letter of intent is where I went wrong) and that's what helped make my essays stronger this year, imo. Best of luck to you and hopefully we hear different results than last year- 565 replies

Oh also I guess I can try to calm anyone's nerves or questions re: Munk's admission process. There is really no 'catch-all' student who gets into the program, so please do not think you are not good enough to get in. I know a few people (I'm from Toronto) who have gotten into Munk and legit have nothing to show on their resumes other than being a A or an A+ student (e.g. no IR experience, no work experience, no clubs, no leadership experience, no languages). I also have seen kids on LinkedIn in the program who are from France or China who speak 3+ languages and have worked at the UN. It's really all over the place who they take in -- and I think they value your grades pretty highly (esp. your last year), and then hold equal weight your experience and your letter of intent. For reference, I was waitlisted. The Program Coordinator stated that for 2018 admission, they over-admitted (about 120 spots, when they only have 80 spots). This was in anticipation of students dropping out for whatever reason. 80 folks were placed on the waitlist. I'm not sure how many got off the waitlist, only one or two people posted on the forum but I'm sure there were more. I did not make it off the waitlist. I had a 3.9 in my last year of undergrad and an overall CGPA of 3.7. However it's important to note that I just made the cut-off for a CGPA of 3.7. I had an 80% on the dot. It wasn't like I was receiving 80-85 my entire undergrad. I was receiving high 70s and some low 80s for most of my undergrad (with the occasionally whoopsie course where I got a 60 #lol), and then mostly 90s and high 80s in my last year which brought up my CGPA. I had no IR experience but tons of leadership experience (lots of work in NPOs, as well as holding very high positions in massive charity campaigns). I think what held me back/kept me on the waitlist was my Letter of Intent. It was very "froufrou." I had just applied to law schools and my statements were all very flowery, e.g. saving the world, world peace, blah blah. It was pretty naive. Well written but naive. Law schools like that, but Munk doesn't. Munk wants hard statements. They want facts. They want quantitative analysis with a strong qualitative edge. I know this because I've read 3+ statements of folks who got into the program (friends and friends of friends) and their statements are quite serious. They are very academic, almost like essays rather than personal statements. TL;DR there is really no point in fretting or worrying about whether or not you would make the cut because the program is all over the place in its admission process. You will not be able to figure it out. They take students who aren't academically qualified but have tons of personal experience. They take folks who are very academically qualified and have virtually no other experience. It just depends on the pool that year. Good luck to all!!- 565 replies

I just posted this in the other Munk/government programs forums but I'll repost here -- I really wouldn't worry. I applied to Munk last year (waitlisted) and most folks on the forum did not hear back re: acceptances until between March 9th-12th. It was like one big sweeping forum post where everyone on the forum posted at the same time saying they had heard back. I got waitlisted on March 13th. There were very few people who heard earlier than that. When I asked the Program Coordinator at the time, she said that some people will hear back sporadically earlier for reasons she wouldn't divulge (I would assume super early applicants, or international students), but that the majority of acceptances will go out at the same time. I can expect it to be around the same timeline this year, as they switched it from 2 years ago. Admission used to be sent out in late February, but now they are early to mid March (e.g. between March 8th and March 15th).

Congrats and sorry to hear that OSAP isn't gonna cover it. I'm not too well-versed in grants but you may want to check out U of T's UTAPS. They assist in covering the financial gap for students who receive the max. amount of government financial aid. I'm not sure if they mean the max. amount of government aid available to that particular student (based on your savings & parental income etc) or the max. amount that the government can offer to any student. You can also contact OSAP directly, explain to them, and/or appeal. That, or contact U of T's financial aid office and ask what your options are. Have you also talked to your bank about a Student Line of Credit? There's quite a few options, in addition to working more hours this summer and/or taking a 2nd job to make extra cash. Otherwise, I don't know a whole lot about U of T's funding -- I've heard the funding options at Munk are terrible lol.

For anyone on the waitlist, this is what Megan said to me when I asked about second round acceptances now that the deadline has passed: "We have an incoming class of 102 for 80 spots. If anytime between now and September our numbers dip below 80 because students withdraw, we will admit off of the waitlist. So as of right now, we won't be admitting off the waitlist anytime soon. Best, Megan"
