How difficult is it to get into PhD Social Work/Welfare Programs?
SWjdg replied to TigerMem's topic in Social Workers Forum
Generally, this is good advice. You WILL have better job prospects with 2 year most master experience. As an admitted PhD Student who doesn't have 2 years post experience, I can tell this doesn't faze me in the slightest. I DON'T like practice courses, I do not like micro level social work. I don't want to teach these courses at a University. I have several friends in the same boat as I am who are landing tenure track positions. Don't kid yourself, schools want you for the research grant's you can secure - not teaching courses that adjuncts can teach.- 12 replies

As someone who recently applied and got accepted - it entirely depends on what schools you are applying to. The ones you mentioned are all tier 1 social work schools and WILL be difficult to get in. You will need to compensate for your low undergrad GPA, retake your GRE, and try to get research experience if you want a good chance to get into any of those schools.- 12 replies

Between Denver or Pittsburgh? Most likely the latter, however if there is funding adjustments in my favor at Denver I would much rather live there. Close to family and home. -

I have many friends in the city and the cost of living has been going up a lot while the stipend at university of Denver remains unchanged. 15k is not hardly enough to pay for a studio per year there. -

I heard from Denver too. I just can't understand how their PhD candidates live on the stipend they hand out (for only 3 years?!). so many questions. -

At this point I just wish I got an answer. this process is completely exhausting and I am so sick of waiting (untill april 15th now). I don't think many people are going to decline their acceptance to WashU, but I am sure it's happened. -

Been waitlisted to WashU, oh joy more waiting! -
I'm in my last semester at WashU (policy/research orientated) and I couldn't disagree more. There is a good amount of macro based opportunities, you just have to be assertive in acquiring them. Some of the most important macro projects in the country are happening right in this city (For the Sake of All, for example). You have to look for your own practicum placement anywhere you go. I can assure you the St. Louis area has more than enough to choose from.

Waitlist's certainly happen! Definitely a good thing, and mainly top applicants will move around schools so surely the waitlist will move around some. -

I didn't warrant a special email I suppose. I'm pretty content with the decision, I just dislike lazy responses - especially when I've talked to faculty there personally. -

Most schools don't do interviews, generally speaking. Interviews are mostly done if they are unsure about an applicant or have a question or to about them. So interviews, depending on the school, can be a good thing or "less of a good thing" scenario. -

I believe WashU gives a lump sum scholarship, you have to spread it out among your time.
