i'm noticing for northwestern comp lit results that in the past handful of years a few people were getting results in late january. making me wonder if we'll hear something next week. -

ah, no way! i was kicking around the idea to go to the conference this year if at all possible; 2018 wasn't an option time- or money-wise. am super curious about your research. i submitted a proposal tonight for an upcoming conference centered around aesthetics research. theme is discussions of "highbrow" and "lowbrow" values so i pitched a presentation about '80s action films, idealized masculine bodies, and the influence of '80s politics/American exceptionalism on action films. my roommates and i are semi-ironically obsessed with top gun but i thought there was actually an idea there somewhere. not expecting to be accepted, but writing the abstract was a blast and good distraction. the experience would be nice. -

this is a hysterical image in my head. he had a singular aesthetic. it's totally worth it. really, i'd say brief interviews with hideous men is my favorite of his overall. but ij is a total trip. @pdh12 i'm sure you were just fine! -

do read infinite jest! it's so worth it. i finally finished it during a very dark period of my life where i had to read it by flashlight. getting to the last line (which is baffling and beautiful and somehow ties it all together) felt like climbing a mountain. have you read any other dfw? i'm a bit of a fangirl, if you couldn't tell -

one of my favorite shows ever was ted leo and the pharmacists opening for death cab. i was prob 13/14 (so 2006 or 07) so my dad stood with me the whole time and it was a blast. i saw the national around then, too, and they were incredible. -

nfl playoffs and hockey AND basketball eat up most of my free mental space. hitting the gym 3/4 days a week is doing wonders too for thinking about nothing. i suspect it'll get less helpful as February approaches, though. -

congrats and good luck, interviewees! i picture that most of my stipend will be towards housing. i had a decent savings account this time last year but working less (and not at all for 3 months) meant living off savings more and whatever grant and loan money. i did manage to pay off a significant amount of credit card and collections debt, though, so that's one less worry and luckily know folks in every city i applied to who have already said they can help me with a potential roommate hunt. i've almost always lived with people and living alone freaks me out! -

one of my LOR writers is the head of our film/media studies concentration and advised me against comp lit sheerly because of language requirements for some programs. she encouraged me to look at more straight film/media or english with film concentrations. i think there are fewer comp lit applicants overall but the way some departments are structured (if that makes sense) makes it hard to really gauge -
