  1. i'm in the midst of finals and trying to apartment hunt at the same time because i'm moving up to chicago in a few weeks. luckily, a good friend already lives in the area and has been touring and meeting with landlords. i'm working on getting a summer gig lined up serving/bartending at a fantastic pub and have another opportunity for a career forming in the pipeline! just had my last night at my crappy job and i feel like i lost ten pounds. i'm currently reading a book called journey by moonlight by a hungarian writer, and i'm really enjoying it. i came across it in the stacks looking for another book, and went with this instead. my last week or so here should be relaxing. my brother's birthday is during my graduation weekend, so i'm going to skip walking and just celebrate my brother and hang out with my friends and family. that was a lot. it's been a long month.
  2. nice! and eesh, i've only been through midway but know i wouldn't want to be stuck in either airport there. ended up taking the 2 year chicago maph option. turned down another offer but a combination of things made this the best option, mostly for language studies and a potential post-school career move. and super cheap rent! i guess i can deal with the bears/blackhawks/bulls for two years.
  3. everyone above me has fantastic advice, so i'm just chiming in to say congratulations on recovery!! way to go :]
  4. would taking a year off after already having two years-ish of time off in the past be any kind of disadvantage?
  5. just want to throw in how much i appreciate everyone's perspectives in here and how helpful this thread is in making a decision.
  6. "yinz" is the pittsburgh/appalachian "y'all" but much funnier. i want to say it comes from scots-irish. my current assignment for film class has me citing youtube and it's been launching me into a half-serious contemplation of uh, everything. who would have thought ten or twelve years ago we'd be citing the cool video clip website for academic purposes? sure, there's runaway irreversible climate change and i lose my insurance this month, but i can cite youtube! (wow, i got depressing fast. i swear i'm fun in real life!) but i think my excitement slash fascination is just a curiosity about internet culture and memory.
  7. are you sure they're a real undergrad and not just christopher walken in makeup? purdue's mla guide online has been my lifeline to figuring out where the punctuation and parentheses go together when i cite things. i'm so useless without it, haha. one of these days, i need to just send them a "thank you" card. on classism, i was actually thinking at work last night about "y'all" and "all 'y'all"-- a guest used them in the same sentence! hence the thought- - and a lot of derisive/defensive sentiments around the word that i've heard growing up. there are plenty of environments down here where you aren't going to use or hear it, but both fill in so perfectly what i think is a glaring gap in the english language. ( i will mock pittsburgh and their "yinz" all i want, though.)
  8. though i know nothing of german grammar in reality, the thought of german comma usage tickles me because german is inherently sort of funny to me. (i mean that in the least-worse sounding way, of course.) russian has some peculiar rules for comma placement that throw me off switching back and forth every day. i edited a friend's friend's paper a bit back for a business course and had to write a gentle overview at the end about subject/verb agreement. and other things. she was bright, but i think just struggled on paper? i have trouble all the time with punctuation inside quotation marks, now that i think about it.
  9. are there other sites besides upenn cfp for conference/journal submission info? love cfp but the organization of the site sometimes bugs me.
  10. it's pricey but looking like my only acceptance this cycle.
  11. got accepted to chicago maph with $10k scholarship!
  12. hah, it's a small and funny world. good luck and fingers crossed for you! i thought about applying there but ultimately didn't feel it was a good fit and instead applied for a teaching fellowship in nyc. i'm still waiting on a few decisions and waitlist movements but already thinking about 2020. it's too much. i'm leaving for vacation tomorrow morning and so, so ready.
  13. ah i was thinking about you the other day reading something about chicago and was hoping you're hanging in there!
  14. i said i was signing off and am still here because i enjoy the camaraderie so much!
  15. i'm in my last semester of undergrad right now.
  16. hey, good luck! i found it hard managing both class and work, but doable. my job has some downtime, but it's in hospitality where at any given moment i'm either doing five things at once or nothing. i still managed to do a lot of my app work on overnight shift, though, and made it a point to carve out some time each day to recharge and not think about school/work/apps to reset my mind a little. if your heart is really set, you'll make the time for it somehow. i'm feeling the same with acceptances, but fingers crossed for us. and congrats on the new job!
  17. unless i get into the maph program at chicago, it's looking like a shutout for me. see you all next year and best of luck to everyone the rest of this cycle.
  18. penn is starting to send out english notifications. holy crap, please send comp lit decisions soon.
  19. it says salad! what did they expect! (i blame x salad sandwiches but still)
