This is part of the reason why I am using it more too. I use it so that no one automatically has to out themselves if they use partner and I think if it's a universal term, then this will be better. It's the same reason why I am trying to identify myself with pronouns more regularly too. I think most people would assume the correct pronouns for me if they met me, but on conference badges, I still use my pronoun stickers. The conference organizers make enough for every attendee (although they are completely optional). For both "partner" and the pronouns, I just think it's better when it's not the default to assume heterosexuality and pronouns. 
That said, I did also think about not co-opting terms from a group I do not belong to. For both of these cases, I believe that that these uses are encouraged by LGBTQ advocacy groups.

Just got accepted by Connecticut.

As a woman in a predominantly female field, you rock my socks, and I'm glad you're going into your field.  I understand the fear of being the only female (I was the only woman in a male-dominant field for a long time), and I hope you're able to get into your program and rock their socks off and help women in maths be the norm, not the exception.

Thank y'all so much! I honestly keep looking back at the email to be sure they sent it to the right person. My undergrad is a small, unranked university; I didn't go to a top 100 program for my MA, and my GRE/GPA aren't really a lot to write home about. Anything is seriously possible! 
Also, this was me opening that email:

I wasn't the one yesterday, but I got an acceptance from UC Riverside yesterday too!  Related to this, I'm such an applicant noob that I have nooooo idea what to say to them when I call in person to talk about the financial package.  Email just said that she'd love to talk in person to explain the financial support and answer questions about the department as a whole -- first part is self-explanatory but are there things I should be asking in the second? Currently my brain is just making a dumb buzzing noise

Oh my gosh same!!! I have to finish my master's thesis and defend by mid-April so I'm simultaneously uber stressed while also having my head in the clouds dreaming about my options (and my upcoming visits to where I've been accepted).

I got into WVU's MA program! I woke to a lovely voicemail from the director of the program! I am so excited!

A POI at my top choice program told me I have a "rich and full file" which is encouraging. I've been exercising more regularly and eating better. I've got a date next week. And I'm pretty sure I aced my midterms.

We are extremely thankful for our acceptance and waitlists. I think there should be a space for people without acceptances (yet!) to commiserate, because before we had any positive responses, we were also feeling down/lonely. But I do think it is important to have a thread where people are able note their rejections and express their disappointments even if they have other acceptances/waitlists.
With that said, I am so sorry you are in this situation, and I truly hope things turn around soon! I know there are a number of people applying this cycle who are here for round 2 or even 3 but have had success this time.

Could also be that the school does rolling admissions without being transparent about it, and those who applied early got their applications reviewed and accepted before those who applied later. Therefore the people who applied later might still be having their apps reviewed. I would never assume a rejection until they've explicitly told you.

So 2+ years after my first publication was accepted it is finally officially published! While it took entirely too long to be officially in print it's super exciting to officially be a published author!

Congrats on the acceptance! Perhaps, we'll see each other around.
Fun fact: I got confused when a different university spelled my name wrong. Turned out that the department had my name spelled wrong but that the grad school had my name spelled wrong. Not sure if it was a typo on my end when I submitted a form.
