  1. Well at least it is news... Not great news... But news.
  2. I think I must have applied to the ten schools who handle everything in mid March because I'm still waiting for over half of my list to get back official letters. Though I am assuming Penn is sending me the big red R at this point.
  3. I'm not even religious and I am asking for an amen on this one.
  4. Mine was pretty involved. Thanks to the APSA, I found a list of every Ph. D. granting political science program in the country plus one or two they left off that I found thanks to US News and my professors. I started off easy, getting rid of colleges I didn't want to attend for various reasons or ones I KNEW I was going to apply to. For instance, I was always going to apply to the Fletcher School and I would NEVER want to live in Arizona just because of the dry heat. Easy in, easy out. Some, I just did not want to live there for 6 years and even if the school was a decent fit, I know it would negatively effect my performance if I was in a less than ideal location. Some were too quantitative heavy. I'm cool with stats and, of course, use them in my research. But when campuses like Rutgers and Rochester boast their reputation on quantitative and math based research, I knew that wouldn't be a good place for me. I found a number of schools I knew would be good for me either through my own research or from faculty/cohort recommendations. I ended up with a short list of about 40. After that I emailed a few professors asking if I would be a good fit for the school. Most were happy to tell me I would. Other were quick to tell me it wouldn't be a good idea. Duke, for instance, told me that the professors there and I didn't share interest. Yale also was quick to pass me back to Tufts/Fletcher School. After a while I had a list of about 20. After that it was being pragmatic. I wanted a small list of schools that were my top schools and prestigious, a number of strong contenders, and two safety schools if I got rejected from the other eight.
  5. You know friendo, until that official letter comes in 1% is better than 0%.
  6. I think at this point, Northwestern is just handing out rejections. I don't know about Florida. All I know is my friend got rejected from them back in January.
  7. Has who applied to Brandeis seen anything from them? I saw an acceptance and a waitlist on the submit a result page two weeks ago and I haven't heard word one.
  8. I'm assuming those who are going to Penn got their letters today. Sigh. Another one for the reject pile. This one hurts.
  9. That is actually how I got into my MA program was non-degree seeking and working with various professors. It is pricy but it can work.
  10. Thought about it. Might do it if I don't get some closure/acceptance by Tuesday
  11. Also, you can check past "submit results" weeks if you are willing to dig through the results forum on here. GradCafe is actually really good at creating estimates.
  12. Thanks for the info... And significantly raising my blood pressure.
  13. I just found this one as I am stressing myself over GRE scores. I have been told damn near everything from every damn person. So at this point, the best I can even think of is that it matters, but doesn't matter, and sometimes does matter a little. I'm personally terrified I am going to miss out on a great program because I was never good at math. I studied for a year straight to be great at stats and am now relatively competent. But after 5 retakes, the best I could ever muster was a 149. My Verbal is a 158 and my writing was a 5.5. But it still scares me that I am going to miss out on some schools because I have a quantitative in the 140 range. I guess it is a number of factors and honestly, I'm happy just getting into a decent program and working at a decent school for the rest of my life. I just hope my work, my writing, and my more positive factors get me over the hump.
  14. I have a theory that Northwestern has their rejection letters uploaded by an overworked grad student who only has free time on Saturday and Sunday.
  15. I'm sorry to hear you got rejected from your top schools. If I get rejected from all of my schools I think I'll just give up on this whole doctor thing and become a stripper. But in seriousness. I'm in a similar field of security studies so three of the ones I applied to were CUNY, The Fletcher School at Tufts, and Northeastern. CUNY Graduate Center is great for more qualitative work and The Fletcher School covers just about every conceivable level of security studies. Of course you have your big schools like Princeton as well and USC on the west coast.
  16. 8, I would say is a long shot but not an impossibility. It just depends on the school and whether or not you have a little or a lot giving up the one spot for a higher position. I would definitely not weigh all of your hope onto that position. But you could get lucky.
  17. I feel it. Even with waivers the price for multiple GRE tests and those who won't waive you is so expensive. I got into two of my safety schools this go around and might just take the hit and accept I'm probably not going to the schools of my dreams just to avoid the pain that was this past year. It is a rough call to jump back in a second time.
  18. Same. I check my email 4 times an hour minimum.
  19. I got a rejection from Northwestern on a Saturday. But I don't think anyone would send anything out on Sunday.
  20. Ah yes, the depression hole. It is absolutely great down here. I got yeses from my two safety schools... But they don't handle funding until March. So I'm still sitting here hoping that one of my six remaining schools accepts me and gives me something that says funding. Has anyone heard from Brandeis? I saw some people got waitlisted and accepted. I haven't seen a single email from them. 2a/0w/2r/6p
