How long does it take to run a background check?

I just had to get one in NY and VA, and it took them between 2-3 weeks each. I wouldn’t worry about it. Maybe contact them in a week if you haven’t heard back anything. Good luck with everything! -

Is anyone currently applying for a study permit? Maybe within the US? It seems like regulations are very different depending on geographical location... and I can’t really find good information online. Thanks! And fingers crossed for everyone who is still waiting!

Thank you! Did you email them? I know it's a controversial topic, but I did that with all of my programs expect for McGill (they already sent me the rejection in the beginning of March so no need to bother them). Everyone got back to me and their information has really helped evaluate when I will receive an answer. And it didn't feel like it was inappropriate to ask at all.

What program did you apply to? Will you accept? And yes, I got my acceptance last night between 5 and 10 p.m. No email. I just logged in. I got my other acceptance on a Wednesday. Also, my two rejections came on a Wednesday (McGill) and Friday (Carleton). And don’t give up hope yet! I’m sure they are still sending out acceptances next week and even after that.

OMG, OMG, OMG!!!! I just randomly checked my U of Ottawa account... And it says ADMITTED!!!!!!! I can't believe this!!!! After waiting for almost three months!!!!!!! My number one choice!!!!! I am so, so happy!!!! Fingers crossed for anyone else waiting out there!!!!

Just a heads up: I officially got rejected from Carleton today. If anyone else plans on complaining, please let me know. I am going to write them an email this weekend and I think it would be good if other people do the same.

Yep. Just Carleton. I don’t think that their selection is fair to intl. applicants. I would have never applied there if I had known that I would just be a “filler” and not an equally treated application. Total nonsense.

And the University of Ottawa just emailed me saying they will notify me by the end of the week.

What program did you apply to again? And I finally received an answer to my question whether domestic students will be chosen first, and then, if there is availability, intl. ones will be considered. This statement was, unfortunately, confirmed... So I guess I will wait two more weeks (I assume I didn’t get in), and then request my money back. That was a complete waste of time.

Hey, absolutele silence from Carleton... I emailed them at the beginning of the month and haven’t heard a single thing.. I might try sending them a message thru Facebook (they are still actively posting there). Might not get a helpful answer, but they might be able to tell us how long it will take until we hear back.

I got my first acceptance this morning from Royal Roads University! Does anyone know anything about this school? Still waiting to hear back from U of Ottawa and Carleton.

The worst part is not only me waiting but everyone around me who is going crazy. So many “what if you don’t get accepted anywhere.....” that’s almost worst. My answer now is to travel the world lol

U of Ottawa told me today that they will be making their decisions soon. The waiting is so hard! I emailed Carleton about their acceptance “procedure” on Monday, but haven’t heard anything back. They posted something about the strike on Facebook; I’m sure I’m not on their priority list to get back to.. Fingers crossed for everyone here!

Hi, I emailed Carleton this morning to see whether it is the same procedure for their Communication MA. If yes, I will complain and I will also request my money back. It still doesn't make any sense to me that you would accept domestic students first, and IF there is availability, you'll take a look at the international students. If that is their policy, I cannot change it, but they should clearly state it on their website. I would have never applied (and hoped for an acceptance) if I had known this... I'll let you know how it goes if you're or anyone else is interested..

I might be the only one, but I think this is unacceptable in some way. I mean you apply to a program thinking that you have the same chance of getting in like everyone else, and then they tell you after that they sometimes only accept 1(!!!!) international student? No go.

Hi everyone, So glad to have found this forum! Did anyone else apply for a MA in Communication? I applied to U of Ottawa, McGill, and Carleton and I really hate the waiting.... Been checking the online portals way too often. Good luck to everyone!
