  1. I feel like at that point unis that haven't contacted you AT ALL are an implied no, I don't have any hope left ^^
  2. I feel you, I am still waiting and we're almost in April this is crazy ! I am waitlisted for a university and waiting on that but there is another one that simply has not contacted me since I applied in december. By now they really should know if I am waitlisted or not, they could at least send an email !
  3. Hello everyone. As an international student I am a little bit confused by the American system. Let's say a college offered me a TAship with tuition waived and a stipend, can I apply for more grants ? If yes, is there a list somewhere ? Thank you in advance
  4. Thanks ! My stipend should be enough to live on if I'm careful, but not to have any money on the side for emergencies. Last question : could I theoretically get a summer job in my home country ? that would make me add around 3000$ to 4000$ to my yearly income which would be awesome
  5. Hey, I will most likely be offered a place but on a low stipend. I would be more than happy to work a couple hours more here and there to make up for it but I have heard there is a hour maximum and you cannot work off campus. Do you guys know of anyway to go around this ? Would working online in my home country be a problem ? Can I tutor for cash or is it a big risk for maintaining my visa ? Thanks in advance !
  6. Both my parents tried university but dropped after a year. However they have always highly valued education for me, probably because they didn't really have one. They are the ones pushing me to try for a Ph.D. While its great to be supported, they do not know much about academia and it can get really furstrating. They have no idea how hard it actually is. When I got my BA , they barely congratulated me because to them there was no way I would not have it. Same for my Masters. They think its like high school you do the bare minimum and you're good. If you look at my extended family, a lot of them work in factories or rural area and criticized me for wasting my time at university.
  7. What exactly is "open house weekend" ? Is it for admitted students only ? Is there an implied interview ?

As an international student I had the same worries. Now that I am here I can confirm that I feel really safe, a lot safer than in most places I have lived in. Campus is safe, full of student, emergency call booth and ua police is always around the corner. I have never experienced anything unsafe downtown or just walking home at night (I am a 5 foot 1 female). The worst thing that I heard of was a stolen wallet because it had been left unattended for a long time (and the wallet was even returned to the library minus cash and credit card) Don't hesitate to message me for more info
  9. Not married but everyone in my grad program is either married /pregnant or in long term relationships. They also bring their S/O to our social events and get togethers and it has never been a problem to anyone. That is in the U.S. In Europe grad students tend to be a lot younger and in general you will be the odd one out..... but no one cares either
  10. I applied for a different program at this University and got my rejection on their online portal, they did not even bother with an email. Hopefully it is just my program though.
  11. Interesting, I always thought it was some kind of scam/spam (as, under FERPA, there is no way they have access to my grades)
  12. I had lost all hope and completely forgot about PhD's. I was readty to start another kind of training and get a job next year. I was at peace in my mind. And I just recieved an email saying that I have been waitlisted for funding in a program. Its really furstrating because I had accepted my failure and now I have hope again which might not lead to anything. Anyone else sharing that feeling ?
  13. Dear All, I have recieved an email from a program saying that I was waitlisted for funding. They also mentionned a campus visit that I could attend even though they know I'm on the other side of the country and that it will be very expensive. The wording of the email really didn't make me feel like they expected me to come in anyway because of price and distance. Now my question is : will this hinder my chances of being accepted ?
