2019 Applicants
placeinspace replied to WildeThing's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Considering it's April 5 and still no news, I'm starting to feel like WSU just isn't going to accept any students this year. How does it make sense to give people less than 10 days to make a decision??? -

Has anyone heard from University of Toronto PhD? My portal still shows under review and I haven't received a rejection letter in the mail like I've been expecting. -

WSU apparently really follows that April 15 deadline. They haven't released any decisions yet based on email response someone posted on the results page. -
BA vs MA Transcript - PhD Apps
placeinspace replied to sweating's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Hey! I also developed really severe depression in school, though mine was during my BA and lasted into my MA. While I know it wasn't my fault, I still feel pretty angry with myself because of how it impacted and hindered certain parts of my life, including my ability to network/form relationships/stay motivated in independent research. However, the most important thing I've learned from GradCafe though is that GPA is not the only factor, or even the most important factor, in your application. I would focus on finding schools that are good fits with your interests, and trying to reach out to any potential advisors before you apply. If you write a fantastic Statement of Purpose, have a great writing sample, and have good LoCs? I think you'll be just fine. And it sounds like you have a wonderful relationship with your advisor, so that's really really good! -

@The Wordsworthian I agree with this so much. I've called Davis twice now trying to get a rejection but no one seems to be answering their phone. -

Just an FYI, I'd called Davis the other day to try and get an official rejection but it went to voicemail. I'm going to try again today. I'll report back. -

I have more respect for Michigan because of this than all the other schools I applied to. Active communication is a sign they respect all their students, imo, which is to the credit of the program. -

Not to be a debbie downer but last year they sent the rejections out 10 days after the acceptances so I'm considering it a rejection. -

I was prepared so it wasn't too bad for me. I'm honestly just waiting for my Davis rejection letter, which are notorious for being brutal (aka "you just weren't competitive enough"). Like, thank you, I know that, you don't need to tell me!! -

I weirdly have not received a Chicago rejection yet, which I hope is because they read my application enough to know I already have an MA and don't want MAPH. -

I’m officially cutting myself off from the pain of this site now that my cycle is over, so my last piece of advice is to be pessimistic about this process. False hope never helped anyone and it’s much better to stay realistic- this isn’t a process you can succeed at through the power of positive thinking, so much better to be aware of the realities than have your high hopes totally crushed. And with that horribly depressing statement, I say goodbye and good luck!! I’ve enjoyed enduring this pain with all of you! -

Congrats to you Davis folks! Such a wonderful program with an amazing and kind faculty. Would’ve been my dream program in another life! -

Does anyone (maybe @Warelin) have any insight into how big the Davis cohorts normally are? -

Woke up to the Davis acceptance and taking it as another implied rejection, and with that, I’m officially done with this process. Good luck to the rest of you guys!! It’s been a wild ride. -

@bardie yeah I think acceptances have gone out via the portal -
At this point I've definitely accepted that I won't be going to grad school. It's really hard for me because I've had this dream since finishing my MA several years ago, but I also recognize that I've changed a lot in that time and some things just aren't meant to be. The good news is, you're always growing and changing, so for those of you who will reapply, you have so much room to grow and get accepted to so many programs next year!!

First of all, congrats @FiguresIII!!! That's so exciting!!! And also reassuring, I really want the sweet release of rejection. After the Chicago rejection comes in, I think I'll finally be able to move on from the grad school thing and start planning the rest of my life. It can't come soon enough tbh! -

After the sudden CU Boulder results yesterday (which were projected for mid-Feb) I'm now frantically refreshing all of my portals multiple times a day. This is getting a little embarrassing tbh. They should really issue acceptances based on who refreshes their portal more- clearly that's a sign of who truly wants to be admitted, right?
