Sorry to hear about your bad news :( How did you hear from UO if you don’t mind me asking? Did they send you an email or did you just check the gradweb profile??

EDIT: You’re the first person I’ve seen mention them, so I’m curious how they’re rolling them out..

The email also said they were only able to select 8 people for their incoming class which I think is for their full graduate program.

Sorry to hear about the rejections, cannot believe how U. of Colorado is taking so long to answer! Your 11.5K stipend and full scholarsh ip at UMass-Amherst is one of the best funding packages I have heard of! Congrats that is quite an achievement!!

Thank you! I'm looking forward to attending in the fall!

It was an email from the graduate director that seemed generic. I applied in painting.

  3. I got my rejections from University of Oregon and University of Maryland today. Maryland sent a nice, personal email which I really appreciate; they were one of my top choices initially. I just need to hear back from University of Colorado and I'll have closure.

artperson, did you hear from Colorado or Maryland?

I called Colorado and it sounds like I wasn't a first selection candidate and am on a waitlist. I'm assuming Maryland is a rejection since they typically reach out to students in end of February to early March. Either way, I received tuition remission and an assistantship from Umass amherst and really love the location and am excited about the interdisciplinary program, so even if I hear back from Maryland, Colorado, or Oregon it won't make a difference at this point.

  5. I applied to Ohio State in painting and hadn't heard anything from them. I just checked my application status today and it changed to rejected which I expected but I'm glad to know for sure now.

Just got word from UO... They still haven’t made any decisions yet and according to the admissions office it won’t be until the end of the month.. Apparently there were “many excellent candidates this year.” Just keep breathing my friends!

That's crazy! I wonder if maybe they have already reached out to some candidates since they are usually so much earlier to contact and interview people in past years. I can't even consider them as an option anymore since my other confirmation deadlines are before the end of the month which is a bit frustrating. Has anyone heard from University of Maryland yet either?

I'm an international applicant (currently living in the States), and – while I don't know what's the average – the advice that I got during my first portfolio review day 2 years ago (from a very kind professor who took a break from the undergrads reviews and chatted with me informally) was: "Don't take the loans, figure out how to do it without paying".

There are a few great programs that waive tuition for most/all applicants (Rutgers, UT Austin, UCLA, VCU) AND there are state universities where tuition is very low and they might waive the non-resident part of the tuition if they accept you (UoF, Florida State University - these are just the schools in the state I live that have excellent funding). State schools might not have the same reputation as Yale, Rutgers, and other top schools, so if you want to teach they might not be your best bet. But if you need time, concentration, studio space and you're happy with the faculty in your concentration, they are very much worth looking into.

$10k annual stipend is helpful, but it's not a livable wage in most of the US cities. I would personally not be able to bear the stress of working in the studio, studying AND working a part-time job to pay the bills AND having a private bank loan (but I might be spoiled + I have the elderly family to take care of in my home country). Plus, you won't be able to work full-time or take jobs unrelated to your major outside of campus while you're in school because of the J1 visa restrictions, so your loan would likely end up being more.

My point is: believe in yourself, it's worth trying to find a school that will help you grow as an artist and not leave you broke. Loans work for some people, expensive schools work for some people, but it's important to decide whether you feel comfortable making these financial commitments and how it will impact your life in the next decade.

I totally agree with almost everything your saying Meaou. I just wanted to add from what I've personally been told/experienced, attending a state school typically doesn't negatively affect someones chances of getting hired as a professor. State schools often give students a full two or three years teaching experience whereas private art colleges may not even offer the chance to teach to each student. When I've looked at faculty as I was deciding where to apply; typically, there is a even split between faculty who attended state vs private art colleges. I'm sure there is some merit to attending a highly regarded program (though rankings do change)  but also there has to be merit in having years of teaching experience and student work portfolios when applying for a teaching position.

I don't remember how this worked last year.

Does financial aid come from two different areas of the University sometimes?

For example, I got a TA with a stipend and tuition remission via email from the director of the art department. I also got an email from the actual financial aid office from the University stating they received my FAFSA and to expect a financial aid package in the mail.

Is it possible that I could get more funding outside of the art department from the University itself?

It's kind of a confusing question, I'm sorry!

I think the specific department you apply for generally controls the more merit based funding like tuition remission and assistantships whereas the financial aid office will tell you the loans and amount of loans you qualify for annually.

    Hi all,

Haven't heard from UCLA painting yet. Seems like two people on this forum have. Wishing you all the best.

    So far:

    SVA Art practices--Accepted
UCLA Painting-- Haven't heard a peep
    Bard MFA-- Waitlisted for interview
    CU Boulder P+D--Accepted
    CMU-- Rejected

When did you hear from cu boulder painting and drawing? I interviewed but haven't heard anything.

Hi everyone, been anonymously lurking and reading here the past few months through my application process. I applied to 7 schools and have only heard back from Yale (rejection) and MECA (acceptance via phone call last tuesday).

Has anyone heard from the following schools?

Columbia University (I think I read they all ready sent out interviews for painting)
    RISD
    UMass Amherst
    University of Oregon
    University of Washington

Also, I am currently finishing undergrad at Pratt Institute. If anyone has questions about the school I'd be more than happy to share some info.

I interviewed at Umass Amherst but am waiting to hear back, and, to my knowledge, we are all waiting to hear from University of Oregon.

Just received a rejectection from University of CO, so sad ?

I'm sorry :( Was it a generic rejection email? I'm still waiting, but I saw someone was waitlisted earlier, so I'm pretty nervous.
