Clinical Psychology University of Utah application portal
foood replied to foood's topic in Psychology Forum
Thanks! You too! Edit: I called the program administrator and she said putting down "please see attached CV" would be sufficient! -
Is anyone here applying to University of Utah (not USU)? I'm trying to complete the application portal and they have a box (max 250 characters) for you to list your pubs & conferences poster and another one with the same character limit for volunteer activities.. If you submitted an application already, did just say "x number of publication & X number of conference posters" without writing the title/citation? 250 characters is ridiculously restrictive lol.

Can I ask which schools have a Nov 15th deadline, that seems really early? I have a few that are Dec 15th and am now 2nd guessing it lol..

Are you looking to apply to Canadian programs as well? I hear Windsor has a high density of refugees
-
Yup, I did get formal interviews after for both schools. Was waitlisted for one and rejected for the other ?
-
Yup! Last around, I had a few profs ask for Skype interviews prior to giving a formal invite to the interview day

Hmm I was in the same dilemma and ended up asking my supervisor about his thoughts. He said it might be good to include a very very brief section on past work experience as sometimes people going into graduate school have never worked outside the university setting (e.g., focusing solely on school), so it's good to know that the applicant has held down a job (especially while going to school) and may speak to their work ethic. That being said, many will may disagree with my supervisor

From my understanding, more and more schools (at least in Canada) are starting to place less of an emphasis on the GRE, although many still use it as an initial filtering tool. There are a few clinical programs that don't require the GRE in the US: https://www.gradschools.com/get-informed/before-you-apply/graduate-school-testing/psychology-graduate-programs-no-gre-required I don't think this is an exhaustive list but it's a good starting point to see if there are any researchers in these school's that would be a good fit for you. I have also heard of people getting into programs with low GRE scores, perhaps you can ask your reference letter writers to comment that your GRE scores are not an accurate reflection of your ability (some people just tend to perform worst on standardized/large timed tests due to anxiety and etc) I hope this helps! Don't lose hope :), the fact that you have 4 first author publications will put you ahead many of us

I recommend that you give this document a read: http://mitch.web.unc.edu/files/2017/02/MitchGradSchoolAdvice.pdf He talks about SOP and answers several of your questions posted here!

In my last round of applications, I talked a few students who were given interviews by their 2nd choice but not their 1st. If there is genuinely a good research fit between you and several faculty members, I would suggest listing all of them rather than one specifically in order to increase your chances. Sometimes you might find that your 2nd or 3rd choice is actually a better fit than your 1st choice!

TW: Racism, suicide, bullying Hi everyone, I thought I would share this post, just in case any international students are thinking of applying to Utah State University's psyc program: Jerusha Sanjeevi, an international Ph.D. psychology student studying at Utah State University from Malaysia died by suicide as a result of racial abuse from several Ph.D. psychology students and the university's neglect to address any of these issues. According to the article, she spoke to five different faculty members and even the counselor at the school's counselling centre who all brushed off her concerns. The university released a statement that they believe that they took all the appropriate actions required to address the issues between the students (which says a lot about the program and university itself). Moreover, it is extremely frustrating that the bullies are Ph.D. students who should know better (I really hope that these students are not becoming clinical psychologists who intend to work with vulnerable populations..) https://www.businessinsider.my/the-boyfriend-of-a-malaysian-student-who-committed-suicide-is-suing-utah-state-university-says-she-suffered-racial-abuse/?fbclid=IwAR1obMjaleePVIq3sTxZx9AQZ0j-okiz9MOtH_Ynifyv3TOj0vwMxkQN1Cs https://kutv.com/news/local/usu-lawsuit-boyfriend-of-deceased-phd-student-claims-bullying-caused-her-suicide Update: ironically enough, turns out the two students who bullied the international students are both clinical psychology students who specialize in cultural minority research......

What tool do Clinical Psychologists use to diagnose disorders?
foood replied to Skibz's topic in Psychology Forum
The IDC by W.H.O. is sometimes used as an alternative to the DSM but the two have a lot of similarities -

Fall 2019 Clinical Psychology Canadian Applicants!
foood replied to FallGO's topic in Psychology Forum
I don't think it is bad form but others may disagree. I emailed my POIs and all of them responded quite positively. It also provides a good chance to ask about ways to improve your application if you were to apply to them again -

Called Concordia.. program assistant said most of the offers went out and the remainder will we sent out today. I was waitlisted so I'm assuming it will be a rejection since most of the other applicants applying to my POI applied only to Concordia -

Fall 2019 Clinical Psychology Canadian Applicants!
foood replied to FallGO's topic in Psychology Forum
Has anyone here had an interview at Western in a previous cycle or knows what is involved in their interview day? I was invited to the in-person interview but asked for a Skype interview instead. I have already spoken with my POI on the phone, so I'm not sure what to expect with the second Skype interview. Any info would be much appreciated! -

I haven't heard anything since the interview as well, but my PI indicated that they are required to submit a list to the department of invites to the open house by Jan 20th. He also said that this list can involve offers/waitlists. -

Thanks! I don't think all PI's are reaching out. My POI indicated that they have a faculty meeting next Tuesday to discuss as a group about applicants before sending out in-person invites -

I think they are just starting their preliminary interviews. I had a phone interview with my POI earlier this morning. She indicated that they have been given a bit of a short window to contact applicants -
