  1. Ah, I forgot about Benedicto. (She's, uh... crazy. She's nice, but you absolutely don't want her as an advisor. Especially if you're a man.) Dr. Ronnie Wilbur also does theoretical syntax and semantics (primarily of sign languages, but she's also worked on Chinese languages); but she wants no more students atm. Elaine Francis is SUPER sweet though, and I'm like 95% sure she'd love to have a new graduate student. She currently only has one student. Email her and ask if she'd be willing to talk over Skype! ? I think your interests are very similar. (And your background with corpus ling would be up her alley too!) Do you have any experience with experimental syntax? Elaine loves working both with experimental and theoretical— so much so that she's writing a book on it! Almost all accredited ling programs are competetive now, but Purdue's ling PhD program would definitely be less competitive than most of the other schools you have listed! Plus, your background fits well with a lot of the other international grad students at Purdue. I think you might have a good chance.
  2. Hi, I went to Purdue for my BA, and I know the professors there pretty well (I completed nearly all of the MA courses for fun). Only two profs really are into theoretical syntax there, but both have worked on Chinese... Which were you thinking of working with? I know one absolutely wants no grad students and the other would LOVE to have a new one. What else exactly would you like to know about the program in general? Separately, I think you might also want to consider Maryland and NYU.
  3. Just committed to Michigan today!!! My soon-to-be advisor emailed me (and I promise this is a direct copy and paste): YAY!!!!! THIS IS SO EXCITING!!!! WELCOME TO MICHIGAN!!!!
  4. Fingers crossed for you, @throwaway_linguist! CUNY would be totally amazing.
  5. Lol, I just really hope to get to see you around in the field someday!!! I think you do interesting work, so I want to see how that develops as your research skills grow. Ahhhh... I forgot to update my signature. ??? I got the email this week. My chest is a bit lighter now, haha. (Although I'd begun making plans for an MA in Europe, so I was super pumped about that, and now I just feel like I have whiplash...).
  6. It's mostly true, honestly. Having a ling undergrad *would* allow you a better chance at a ling PhD in general, let alone at those schools (they require a good research background that can't be supported at a school that doesn't have a linguistics major/department). However, you could stay at your current school, spend time doing linguistics readings, then do an MA in linguistics at a less prestigious school before reapplying to prestigious schools for a PhD. (That being contingent on you doing good research in your MA.) Basically, the choice is yours. You do have options if you don't want to leave your current university.
  7. Oh, good!!! I saw your post on the results page and was like, "God, I hope that's @phonotactless." So happy you at least have one clear option.
  8. To be fair (idk if it'll make you feel better), you applied to fairly well known/ranked programs, and the situation is tough for international students in the US right now... Trump's administration really has affected funding and visas. ? That being said, stay hopeful! There's still another month for the places that have waitlisted you to offer you a place.
  9. A lot of various things, but nothing really negative— I know there's a leaning toward lab phonetics and phonology (and some socio?), and they pick candidates with very specific interests and experiences based on that. Probably for the better (not my field at all, but I understand!). I've also heard that even if you get in off the wait list, it's apparently gossiped about in the department. Then, like, that the open house is way more formal than others and that they rarely blatantly reject those invited... The attendees make up the accepted and waitlisted, so the visit is basically for the shortlist. I've probably heard other things and forgotten since I never considered applying!
  10. I agree with @2017... I would stay positive, but that sounds like a way of preventing people from being upset and possibly causing issues. (Especially given what I've heard about Stanford's application process from the gossip mill.)
  11. I'm unsure right now, but maybe? I want to talk to my current advisor to make a game plan- Chicago is a great school and even if I don't go there it might be a good idea to at least make connections there? Idk though... I'll let you know when I decide. I'm guessing you're going? ?
  12. Just got my first acceptance! It's making me feel more positive about everything. (And I have my interview weekend with Michigan, my #1, next week.) Sending good vibes out to y'all. ❤️
  13. I think they've already gotten to the interview stage, like @Gaunter O'Dimm said. My POI had made it sound like I was going to get an interview... but I didn't. Eh. Not my top choice so. ?‍♀️?‍♀️?‍♀️
  14. Nice! Good luck. I almost applied for a masters in the Netherlands (University of Amsterdam), but the professor I would have been working with couldn't get funding for me.
  15. Yup! They sent it to everyone, including people applying to other departments. ?
