  1. Hi there! We are in the same boat - my BA is Spanish, took a class on Phonetics/Diction back in 2014 and fell in love, and MA is Instruction, taught Spanish and left for that lingering love of Linguistics. I was told flat out that I am not a candidate for any PhD programs without training in Linguistics, and so I've accepted a spot in the program at CU Boulder this fall. I intend to start the groundwork to stay for a PhD ASAP and I'll be working as a substitute teacher on my days off/half days as my schedule allows. I know it's a hard thing to do and it's a lot of money but I'm trying to focus on the endgame where I have my doctorate and work in this field, even though it's scary and money is tight right now. Best wishes to you!
  2. Congrats! I have lived in Denver since Sept 2016 and I love the area. It's a major reason I am planning to accept my spot in their MA Linguistics program. (Either here or UVa)
  3. Hi there, I have had trouble connecting with my program at UVa as a result of the virus/people being away. I'm understanding of the circumstance for sure but it does make me nervous! I still haven't heard back from 2 schools I applied to (Boston U and Indiana U Bloomington) and I have wondered if it's for that reason.
  4. MA since my BA is in Spanish and not Linguistics. I was told I needed the MA to have a competitive PhD application which makes sense of course. I'm also glad I'm not alone!
  5. Hi there, I know I'm a little late to this thread but I've been accepted to UVA for the Linguistics MA and I'm strongly considering it, but the problem is there is no funding from the school. So I would have to work. Can you share any insight on trying to work and live and study in Charlottesville? Thank you!
  6. I would like to start a thread specifically for Masters students who aren't being offered funding in their own programs so we can share resources and maybe help each other find funding options!
  7. I'm obsessing too! I still haven't heard back from Indiana which is making me really nervous. It's between them and Boulder right now in terms of, like, my personal comfort since I have a ton of family in Indiana and I currently live in Denver so either of those would be good for that reason. But I can't get UVA out of my head! I really like the idea of being a linguistic anthropologist and UVA has absolutely the perfect program for me to do that. But am I putting myself in too narrow of a niche? I won't get my resident tuition benefit like I would at Boulder, so would I be putting too much financial burden on myself? Around and around in my head.
  8. In that case definitely don't give them an entire proposal then! Just stick to exactly what they're asking for on the website.
  9. This was a good read, I'm in the same boat as OP (BA in Spanish, taught it in middle schools for 4 years) and have been accepted into a few programs for MA after being told I wouldn't have a competitive PhD application without a degree in Linguistics. I'm very much in this struggle right now because I heard from dept heads that I could go to work with a terminal MA but PhD was an option as well. Without MA funding, I'm not sure what the best course of action would be.
  10. UBC = University of British Columbia in Canada, correct?
  11. Thank you so much! I heard back from UVA and CU Boulder with acceptances so I am seriously over the moon. I will look into fellowships like you mentioned. I will have to evaluate whether graduate housing or living in the community would be more cost effective.
  12. Are you applying to Masters or PhD programs? And where do you want to apply?
  13. Hello all! I applied to these MA programs in November: University of Virginia University of Delaware Boston University And then my whole life got flipped on its head and I filled out 2 more applications at the last minute: Colorado University - Boulder Indiana University - Bloomington I was admitted to Delaware! With zero funding, so I really have to think about whether I want to do that or not. I'm really hoping CU or IU works out even though it was so last minute. Do you think this would affect my chances? A little more about me: I majored in Spanish and got a MA in Instruction from a tiny college in Minnesota in 2015 and 2016 respectively. Moved and started teaching in the Denver area. I really liked the kids and I loved engaging in language education with them, but all the other bs around a teaching career really wore me down. Maybe as an older adult I would consider returning but K-12 education is tough. I'm open to TA spots but again in a MA program I don't know what I'll have available to me. I was advised not to apply directly to PhD programs since I don't have a formal education in Linguistics, only a Phonetics elective as part of my major. Which I ADORED and has led me here! Looking forward to learning from you all.
  14. I'm sorry to butt in on your conversation but I actually lived in Mankato for 12 years (plus 4 if you count coming home for breaks during undergrad)! And my dad works in the Veterans center there. If you have any questions about the town please let me know! I live in Denver now and have applied to the MA Linguistics program at Boulder.
