I'm finishing up my MFA in Fiction from Columbia! Absolutely agree--incredible teaching experience and for my work creatively, but definitely minimal theory. I did get to take a course in the English department, which I loved. How are you thinking about continuing your creative work in the PhD?
I love that spreadsheet! I was hoping to augment the specific funding information with other headings like teaching load, lowest-highest temps, etc. I'll think more on this!
I'm at Columbia's MFA for fiction right now! There is graduate housing available, but it's usually reserved for International applicants/applicants who aren't from the Northeast. I pay about $1200 a month for my apartment with one roommate that's really close to campus. That's pretty cheap for the area, where non-Columbia housing apartments can easily be upwards of $2k for a studio.
I know we're still early in the game, but I'm wondering if any GradCafe vets have any tools or tricks they used to pick between schools. If anyone had a spreadsheet they used to weigh offers, I'd love to see it, but any other help is really appreciated! I'm thinking of making something like this anyway, but I know I'll forget basic things like...summer funding, lol.
Thanks!
It just helps so much honestly knowing that it’s next week, though. With gradcafe mishaps and data from last year vs several years ago the entire waiting process is just so draining! Sometimes I wish I’d never discovered gradcafe but then I remembered that I used CollegeConfidential, MFA Draft and the Type-A personality will never leave me, lol
I also got in!! Longtime lurker :). I ended up applying to the Bridge Program and didn't hear anything back, they might let us know later! I know they said more info would be coming in a separate email.
