I’m planning on making a visit to school that is paying for flights— should I fork up the money to visit a school that isn’t paying for flights, just so I have a basis of comparison with the other school at least? I’m a teacher who will be on spring break so I do have the time.

if you have the money, i'd encourage you to go if you want to be able to compare them on equal footing. it's nearly impossible to catch the vibe or feel of the school through description or a current grad student who's being completely transparent imo

What do y’all think about visiting when schools don’t have set visiting days? One of the programs I’m admitted to does not have a visiting weekend.

I definitely want to go check out the city and campus, but I’m not sure how to approach the program. Should I email and ask if there’s a good time for me to visit?

Any thoughts would be appreciated :)

Looking through a number of "from the waitlist" acceptances, it makes me wonder, when is it appropriate to consider the waitlisted university a rejection? Do they send out additional rejections for waitlisted students when they have no shot or do they have to simply wait it out until April 15th?

I’m sure many schools operate differently, but I will let you know my waitlist experiences.

Last year I was waitlisted at two universities and didn’t hear anything other than my initial waitlist status via emails in mid- February. For a month and a half I touched base with the programs once to affirm interest and check status, but I mainly had no contact and just waited.

I thought April 15th would be the magical day to end all waiting! Nothing...

On April 16th I couldn’t stand it any longer and reached out.

Both schools said they were impressed (etc.) but needed more time. Essentially, I wasn’t the first person on the list and they’d extended an offer(s) to someone and that person was allowed some time to think over the offer.

After a few days, one school sent me an official rejection notice from the DGS (who was very kind) and said apply in the future as they had been fighting for me.

After a week of waiting with school two, I inquired again. They said they were waiting to hear on a couple of offers still.

Finally, on May 7th, the person I had been communicating with emailed with the final rejection. ?

All of that waiting... for that....

This year I’m on a waitlist. They’ve assured me they’ll notify me the second my status changes ? I’m sure they will... that exact second...

And then I have an acceptance!!! But...it came with a waitlist for funding.... so I guess I’ll just wait on that... ? Again, they’ve assured me of their definite interest and immediate notification when/if there’s a change. And since they said “immediate” I’ll just keep checking my email sixty times a day...

but I also don’t want to keep a slot open for someone who might really want it in the school I won’t be attending

    @toxicmoss

I think it’s so kind for you to think about others here!

Speaking as someone waitlisted last year and this year at multiple schools.....this is your shot!! You worked hard for it, and you earned it!! Take all the time you need!

Last year, I didn’t get my final rejection from a school until early May, after being waitlisted early February. The limbo is tough, but I’m genuinely excited for people when they get accepted and want them to make the best choice for them.

    Good luck!!

With the sudden UW result I'm solidly a shut out this year. Best of luck to everyone still in the process!

Sorry @CaffeineCardigan! I was shut out last year but learned so much in the process! I hope you did and will try again next year if you’re not too busy on that land!

For what it’s worth I’ve been Googling plots of land all week b/c of our convo last week!

    Good luck with everything!

Oh boy. I do. I will say: the struggle is real, and there have been many days that I have daydreamed about being the young, single, just-post-undergrad person who could sleep until 10 and then leisurely walk to the library to work all day. There is none of that when your kid comes into your room at 6 a.m. and tells you she just barfed (as happened to me this morning). However, you will have an enormous advantage, which is that emotionally and priorities-wise, you will have your shit together like 100x more than most of your cohort. You know how to be a person and manage responsibilities. You'll know better where your limitations are and when to step back. In many ways, it is much harder to do the PhD with kids (and I only have 1), but as far as long-term goals and success, you may be ahead of the game and more focused. But it's possible. You can do it!

Thanks, @bfat for taking the time! I’ve been enjoying reading your responses to all of the questions, as well as, the other students sharing wisdom! We appreciate y’all!

I've been working with a few people looking at starting a little homestead where people can live sustainably/visit and use their skills by teaching lessons or just having creative space. Shockingly this feels less idealistic than a PhD, but academia is still, I think, where I want to be.

I loved this when I read it! May I ask if you have more info on this? How are you developing a plan for it?
