There are other trans folks teaching in my department both at my current job and at my last position. I choose to believe that there are a lot more of us out there, and that over time we will become ever more visible.
Yes, I'm local to Temple. I live one 20-min bus ride away from the Annenberg building. I feel really lucky that there's such a high concentration of universities in the Philadelphia area, because I don't think I could commit to Ph.D. study otherwise. I'm not willing to give up tenure, and I need to stay local if I want to keep my job. I'm still mulling over whether I'll take a leave of absence or try to go on teaching half-time while I do my coursework.

Ugh. So we wait. For some reason I was expect them to be one of the interview schools. Guess not ?

Did you end up struggling through the UD essay this weekend?
I feel I know who your person of interest at Temple is because I'd like them on my committee as well (although not as my main) ?. I am interested in transgender representation in video games/popular culture. If I do get in at Temple then I want to focus on representation in video games.
Your research interest sounds very cool! Gender is one of my "things" that really gets me when it comes to research. I love studying it and constructions of masculinity/femininity as well.

i hv a more old-school interest  probably political comm, public opinion in the influence of technology. I am also very interested in gender studies!! and masculinities!!! hope one day we can hv FtF discussion

This is a general rant/reflection as the application season is nearing an end and the waiting is happened. I know a lot of us have started considering what we wish we did better, but I'd love to know- what do you wish programs did differently. Also, I'm sure this goes without saying- but I'm not bashing, just recognizing how stressful this process is and the places that schools could improve. I'll start us off.
Just take the unofficial transcripts dammit. Don't make me pay $10+ dollars for each transcript that I have to send. Don't make me send paper copies. If you accept me, I'll happily go through the trouble. Quit with this community college bullshit. I just received an email from a program saying that once they receive an official transcript from a community college that gave me credit for a math class I took in highschool then my application will be complete. It was a dual credit class! It's listed on all my other transcripts and wasn't even taken at the college. Do you really care what I made in calculous 7 years ago? Do you really need that to review? Just give us the projected acceptance dates. Please don't make me crawl through the results page. Please don't give me anxiety checking the portals, email, mailbox... We're expected to turn in everything by a certain date and time. If our application is late, many schools won't even consider it. So I ask, why is this a one way street? We paid you the money, can't we at least know when we'll find out.   
What are your top 3 pet peeves of this application season?

I was at work, on the phone with a participant, when my Inbox changed from "Inbox" to "(1) Inbox."  I opened it -- because I can multitask, alright? That's why you hired me, remember, *boss*?  I was still actively engaging in this phone conversation -- and saw an e-mail saying "Your Admission Decision is Available."  My heart dropped.  I thought for sure this meant rejection.  Even the place I am currently waitlisted gave me a courtesy telephone call.  Decision via portal clearly meant rejection.  I immediately closed my inbox, and tried to keep from crying while I spoke to my participant for another thirty-four agonizing minutes.  When she hung up, I took a deep breath, let myself cry a little, and opened the portal.  Skimmed for words, shortish letter, skimmed some more -- "CONGRATULATIONS!"  Cried some more, happy tears this time.  As it was already 4:30, I checked in with my coworker, cried even more, hugged, and we each clocked out a few minutes early to celebrate with mimosas (hold the OJ. I guess that's just called champagne everywhere else in the country).  

Excellent! So happy for you! I will patiently wait and see to my fate regarding Temple ? 

That was me. I emailed my point of contact in the department to thank her for meeting with me over the summer, and she mentioned that mine was the first decision they had sent out, so it sounds like it's still in process. Good luck!!

Thanks, @Mirotu!! I wasn't expecting a decision to come so soon, so I was shocked to get it. At first I thought it was a rejection because the envelope was so thin. I had to read the letter about three times before I could process it.
