boston is such a big college town that i'm sure there are a lot of resources on neighborhoods, best places to look, etc. there are also probably some housing scams because of the high volume of students that come so be wary! fb groups are the best way to find sublets/rooms at a good rate, tbh. do a search and see if there's like a "boston affordable housing" group or something of that end.

allston and somerville are great places to live; quieter and less expensive while still being accessible to the city. good luck!

Thanks so much this is really helpful! I never thought of Facebook but definitely sounds like the way to go. All the best with your next step! :-)

  2. Hey all!

Just curious about peoples accommodation plans... what time is best to start looking/ sort accommodation out? I'm planning to live off campus and won't be able to visit anywhere/ know others. Any advice much appreciated! :-)

I'm tempting xD, bc I also got accepted to RCA painting.
I know not much about these two programs, I can't fly there to have first hand experience, and I have limited resources online ?

As an international too, I found it really helpful to email a couple past students from the programmes I applied to; I got some very detailed responses and it's lovely how willing artists are to help each other. They gave me very helpful insights into their experiences, the pros/ cons/ struggles of the programme and the sort of artist they think it bests suits (some even took the time to look at my website). This really helped me envision how I would find being on the MFA.

Hope that helps and good luck deciding :-D

Has anyone heard any rejections from Tyler??

I just declined an offer that I originally received at the end of last month from painting if that helps to answer anything. I've noticed sculpture and printmaking seem to be further behind in the admissions process.

How long after an interview would you generally expect to hear something back?

Interviewed for 3 and heard back from one 3/4 weeks later and from the others roughly 2 weeks later. I think they were exceptionally quick though and it's dependant on when faculty can meet up, how many finalists they had etc.

All the best with hearing back :-)

I've been accepted to their painting program in March 12, hope the information helps ;D

Snap! accepted the offer and all  :-) Are you planning to go?

Can't wait to study under Josephine; past students have nothing but wonderful things to say about her and I loved our interview.

Can't beat a great programme at a great price either! :-D

  7. Got accepted to MICA Hoffberger! With a merit scholarship. Unfortunately wayyyy out of my price range still unless I can source further funding, so it's likely a no-go. But it is a real confidence boost to have been accepted into such a selective programme, so very grateful to them.

I'm an international applicant (currently living in the States), and – while I don't know what's the average – the advice that I got during my first portfolio review day 2 years ago (from a very kind professor who took a break from the undergrads reviews and chatted with me informally) was: "Don't take the loans, figure out how to do it without paying".

There are a few great programs that waive tuition for most/all applicants (Rutgers, UT Austin, UCLA, VCU) AND there are state universities where tuition is very low and they might waive the non-resident part of the tuition if they accept you (UoF, Florida State University - these are just the schools in the state I live that have excellent funding). State schools might not have the same reputation as Yale, Rutgers, and other top schools, so if you want to teach they might not be your best bet. But if you need time, concentration, studio space and you're happy with the faculty in your concentration, they are very much worth looking into.

$10k annual stipend is helpful, but it's not a livable wage in most of the US cities. I would personally not be able to bear the stress of working in the studio, studying AND working a part-time job to pay the bills AND having a private bank loan (but I might be spoiled + I have the elderly family to take care of in my home country). Plus, you won't be able to work full-time or take jobs unrelated to your major outside of campus while you're in school because of the J1 visa restrictions, so your loan would likely end up being more.

My point is: believe in yourself, it's worth trying to find a school that will help you grow as an artist and not leave you broke. Loans work for some people, expensive schools work for some people, but it's important to decide whether you feel comfortable making these financial commitments and how it will impact your life in the next decade.

Thanks so much for the feedback! I really appreciate it :-) you're very right about what you've said and needed to hear it.

As well thank you ablobofcrazy and EastCoastPhoto for your feedback, it is very appreciated.

  9. Is paying $22,000 a year for an MFA good/ the average? (That is half tuition and will also have a $10,000 a year stipend) -offer entails 10 hours TA

Realising in my position I didn't really think this whole studying in the U.S thing through enough .... $44,000 in debt if I can even miraculously get a loan from my country (UK). Feeling pretty gutted. I thought it was finally my time after non-stop rejections from everything I've applied to the past few years.

Any thoughts or fellow UK applicants?

So just out of curiosity- and I throw this question out there for everyone- how do you guys plan on making up the difference in tuition costs and living fees after your scholarship money offers? Some schools for instance have a $55,000+ per year tuition cost, plus a mandatory $1000+ health insurance fee, several academic fees and then of course there’s room and board.. Are you guys taking out graduate loans or how are you paying for all this?

I know it’s not ideal, but I think I’ll have to continue working a part time job just to pay rent while in school :( What’s your guy’s academic financial plans?

I'm really hoping for a good funding package (accepted to Tyler Painting but now waiting on funding offer); all admitted students at least get a TA position but the amount of tuition it covers varies.

I know I will still need a loan of some sort, which I have NO IDEA where from since I'm from  UK/ Ireland and we have ONE government student loans company and they don't fund studying abroad...a private bank loan seems like a very undesirable option....

Hi everyone, hope you are all surviving.

I have an interview very soon for the MFA at Glasgow and am freaking out. I don’t have a BFA so am really worried about talking about my work. Specifically the email they sent me says

“The main focus of the conversation will be your art practice, your understanding of your work within wider artistic and theoretical contexts, and your reasons for applying”

any advice for what they’d be looking for in my understanding of my work within wider artistic and theoretical contexts?

Also if anyone has any experience with the GSA or has interviewed there I’d love to know more

Hey, what is your discipline area and when is the interview? Someone I did my BA with went there for their MFA (painting), if you want to PM me I can send you her fb and instagram handle (sorry don't have her email), I'm sure she'd be happy to give you some advice on the interview. Are you applying from the U.S?

Hey, I had my interview with UIC yesterday. They asked me a project where I went completely off my comfort zone and to explain that work. Other than that, they asked me to explain another work of mine that shows them who I'm and want to be as an artist. I explained while my project was open via screenshare on Skype. Also, both of these projects were included in my Slideroom portfolio.

My UIC interview went fine, I think. Was interviewed with the program director (we had been in touch via mail) and two of the professors of the department. They took interest in my work and told me I have a lot of potential. They also have recommended me to think about the prelim program they have and honestly, I think they're right since I have a different undergraduate degree (Architecture) and my online course/internship experience probably isn't equivalent to a complete BFA program. I'm thinking about it but at the same time, I'm worried about the extra cost as I'm an international applicant. Let's see what the final offer has for me.

They said I'd be hearing a final word in 1.5-2 weeks time. Good luck to all if you guys had an interview with UIC, yet!

    thanks for the feedback!

All the best with hearing back, sounds like they do really like you as a candidate, hopefully they might even give you a good funding offer for their prelim!

    Hi all,

I've been anonymously reading this forum throughout the process of applying to MFA painting programs. Thank you for all the input additional information you have supplied throughout this forum.

Has anyone heard from the following programs? (interviews, acceptances, rejections...)TIA.

    Indiana University

    Boston University

    Virginia Commonwealth University

    Tyler School of Art

Boston University (painting) have some interviews this week, but not sure if that is all the interviews they're planning on having. Tyler (painting) have carried out interviews/ acceptances. When I was researching schools I saw Indiana (Bloomington?) had quite a late deadline compared to others, so I wouldn't be surprised if they are still reviewing applications.

Kind of confused by how schools seem to send responses out to some and not others at the same time...

Damn, just got rejected by UCI and I am starting to realize how much a blessing rejection is.  Getting comfortable with that seems like it'll be a super power.  Shout out to all those with rejection in their emails, gonna get bulletproof

So true about getting bulletproof towards rejections!

I've been happily surprised with my applications, but this is the first time since I finished my BFA (3 years ago) where I have applied to virtually ANYTHING and not been rejected; including things were the applicant pool was much smaller.

We just need to keep going, move onto the next thing, have a thick skin and most importantly, keep creating!

Applied to MICA Mount Royal and Hoffberger, have yet to hear anything. Did reach out to Mary Baum last week to inquire, we had been in close contact since November and I felt it would be acceptable to reach out. Her response was short but cordial, says they are “still in the review process”...which “continues all month”.

Hoffberger has upcoming interviews next week; i've seen some people speculate that some schools do more than one round of interviews so maybe if you haven't received a rejection you're not crossed out.

I was having a look at your work (which is great!) and saw you have a background in video too; that's a great combination and I would expect painting programs should really love the unique perspective you can bring. I would be surprised if interdisciplinary programs in particular (like Mount Royal) don't have a big interest in you; especially because you've demonstrated your ability to think in-depth beyond one field :-)

anyway, all the best with hearing back :-)

Hi all, first time posting -- wish I had discovered these forums before I started applying lol!

Anyone know how to interpret it if you've heard nothing from a school, but know that both rejections and interview invites have been out for a while (for some applicants, anyhow)? Is there a chance that they're holding onto my name in case their first-choice applicants don't enroll when they're offered spots in the program?

    Hi,

A lot of people of this forum seem to experience the same as you and I really have no idea why colleges do this, maybe they don't know we talk to each other lol.

I was in that situation with rutgers, but had to look on the check my status portal they have to get my reply (rejection in this case).

When I was invited to interview at tyler, a past student told me they must be pretty interested to ask to interview that early, which made me think there are two rounds of interviews based on 'top top' and 'top', but it also seems from other colleges that they just do multiple rounds of interviews.

It certainly is frustrating I hope you get good news soon!

I just realized one of my letters to Tulane still hasnt been submitted. Its two weeks passed the deadline and Im freaking out. I emailed the professor and Tulane and sent him two more email reminders from tulanes app portal. any one have any idea if im totally screwed?

I don't think it will ruin your chances, I had transcripts rejected from one college a while after the deadline (as I am applying internationally I didn't realise the US rule that the undergraduate college is meant to send them not me), and they just asked to resend them and still invited me for interview. At the end of the day, they want the best students and they know we've paid our submission fee so I don't think they want to discount anyone from progressing in the admissions process.
