Just received a voicemail from the DGS at Penn State extending an offer of admission—totally unexpected, man oh man.
(Life has been busier than usual for me over the past few weeks, and I’ve been remiss in keeping up with everyone’s good news, but congratulations to all who’ve been accepted and waitlisted—and I’m keeping my fingers crossed for all those who are still waiting to hear back!)

I love that! My writing sample had a lot to do with identity formation in Nella Larsen's Passing.

*waves* Hey, everyone. Longtime lurker here... I feel kind of weird because I feel like I'm familiar with a few of you as a result of my lurking and no one knows who I am, LOL. My name is Elia, and I applied for English Lit PhD programs for Fall 2020. I'm currently finishing up my last semester of undergrad. I'm interested in the interestion of race, sexuality, and gender within the African Diaspora (primarily African-American and Latinx) within literature. I applied to the majority of the UC schools because of a summer program I did, as well as Penn State, Yale, and USC. Other than that I've been anxiously waiting and obsessively checking Grade Cafe and Reddit like most everyone else, lol. Curse this neverending humanities decision wait time!

Oh my goodness....I got into Berkeley??? Funding for five years!!! WHAT

I was just about to go to bed and I got into UC Berkeley ?
EDIT: Just noticed the line: "The Berkeley English Department has nominated you for a prestigious university fellowship; as soon as we know the outcome of that nomination, I will be back in touch to clarify the offer." WHAT??! WHAT!

Acceptance from Duke's Literature program! ?

Just received confirmation that I am on the waitlist at UMD - after receiving outright rejections from UT-Austin and Northwestern, it was nice to have somewhat of a vote of confidence from a program! 

Lol Northwestern just sent me a second rejection email

was notified that I'm on a very short waitlist at UCLA—my senior thesis research was inspired by my POI at UCLA, so that would be amazing!

Got a very nice phone call from the Penn State DGS!  

Got a rejection from Stanford. Oh well, I didn't want to do a cross-country move to California, anyway.*

Just got my itinerary for the Emory visit. I'm nervous but I am also REALLY excited, especially because I'm apparently scheduled for an interview with a history faculty member who co-directs the Center for Digital Scholarship, which means they may want to know more about the research project I'm currently working on here in Charleston. I'm really looking forward to this trip!! This comes as a good boost after the bummer of a rejection from UT ?
Is anyone else on here going? 

Northwestern and Duke said no... but Chicago said yes! It really is a crapshoot—that being said, it really does come down to luck, rather than qualification, after a certain point. 

He told me roughly the same thing when we talked about applying there. Sorry if this is creepy, but we went to the same school. I figured you might have the same thesis advisor as I had for my undergrad thesis. I was also really disappointed by my Austin rejection. Trying to keep my spirits up, though. 

When I got the acceptance from Chicago—which was a letter from Deborah Nelson saying something like "You'll hear shortly from a member of the faculty via email or phone..."—not even 10 minutes later another email came through and I thought, Oh, that was fast! But it wasn't from a Chicago prof—it was an invite to a Columbia interview. (They don't usually interview for my field, 20th c). When I say I sat down on the stairs of my apartment in the dark and was nonverbal for an hour . .  whew.
Was roused out of it only by a call from my best friend/mentor (at whom I've moaned and despaired constantly about how I'm sure I'll get shut out) which he began by yelling, I quote, "HAHAAAAAA HOW'S THAT NEGATIVE SELF-IMAGE DOING, HUH? HEADLINE: REALITY TRUMPS HATE. WOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOO!!!" Lol. Okayyy buddy!
To be honest I've been a little too dazed to properly feel anything about it, but seeing that something I did make someone I care about so happy—well, that was the first thing that really made me smile.

I've been a long time lurker on this forum, and used it for some great advice earlier in 2019. So I thought, you know, good time to post that I got my first decision of the cycle, and it was an offer from the University of Chicago. !!?

Found out this afternoon that I've been accepted to the University of South Carolina! I'm so excited! 

Just learned that I have put the "in" in Indiana. ?

Don't know who also applied to McGill here - only Canadian school I applied to - but I just got accepted to their PhD program! This season is looking up, y'all.

Same. I'm kind of concerned about the person who submitted 22 applications. I need to know how they accomplished that? I did 9, and I was wiped.

Just got in at IU-Bloomington! 

You’re not too old. Hang in there. I went through several cycles, but for now just wait. I know it’s tough but there’s still schools left, don’t lose hope. If it doesn’t go your way know that it’s not the end of the world (feel free to reach out if you want to talk to someome who got shut out too).
