While I personally would rather any person entering School Psychology to actually want to work with school populations (since it deprives spots from people who do) many School Psychology programs have faculty working in Clinical Childlike research areas. Some schools like Ball State and Lehigh rarely pump out school practitioners = and rather pump out clinicians that end up at Children's hospitals or other private practice settings.

It is so much less competitive than both Clinical and Counseling Psychology. Just make sure you apply to faculty or programs with a more clinical research or training focus and you should be golden. Many of the programs I applied to often accept a few students every year who would like to work outside of schools (but certain schools discourage people viewing the field as a clinical backup).

If they sense that you are viewing them as a backup (rather than fit truly being there) it will likely not help your chances. Acceptance rates are around 10-25% among top School Psychology PhD programs (it was even worse this year) which is higher than Clinical/Counseling but not a walk in the park easy.

Best of luck everyone applying next cycle!

That’s interesting to know. Personally, that’s far from my area of interest so it’s not something I would consider but is really helpful for someone interested in child clinical psych!

This is great info. I'm being told by my faculty to include some counseling PhD programs in my apps next year since this whole clinical process has gotten insane, but I wasn't sure where the differences lie. I'm still waitlisted for two programs, but I recieved five interviews this year and not a single acceptance which is apparently unheard of in my department....

Program fit and POI research area is the most important thing. There are professors and labs in both counseling and clinical programs that will likely fit your needs.
I will warn that getting into counseling programs is insanely competitive too and it’s more a matter of expanding your net of possibilities than these being “back ups” to clinical.

Is it normal for PIs to not reply to emails inquiring about the status of your application? I sent an email 3 weeks after my interview and never heard back. Thanks in advance!

I’m right there with you. It’s been radio silence. Only thing I can think of is that the department told them to not respond to any emails until decisions have been made

  4. Thoughts from the collective? I’ve emailed both the program  coordinator and the admissions coordinator weeks ago after my interview for a timeline update and never heard back from them. Would emailing again for an update be overkill? I could email my PI instead but I’m worried I’ll come across as too pushy. It’s been a long time since the interview and even though they told us it could take a while and to have patience until April 15 this is driving me crazy.
there’s been no news on gradcafe either so I don’t think decisions have been made.

I feel this on so many levels! I only have one I'm waiting to hear that I was waitlisted for. Sending good vibes!

Sending good vibes to you too! It’s been complete radio silence from the one I’m waiting to hear from. Makes me feel like I hallucinated interviewing with them. If I didn’t have email proof from the department and from professors, I would chock it up to an extremely vivid stress dream.

Hoping for the opposite for you ❤️ but I feel you friend. This LIMBO sucks. A March 15th deadline would have been a lot nicer.

Yes it would have! I think it all has to do with funding though ? some departments just don’t know yet what their budget will be. I think the Limbo this year is even worse for those waitlisted because of that.

  7. It’s been over a month since I interviewed with a program. I sent a follow up thank you email and got a nice response back. Since then, it’s been complete radio silence. I waited a few weeks before politely emailing both the graduate coordinator and the program lead expressing continued interest and asking for an update on the timeline for hearing back. Still no word! I’m assuming rejected but the not knowing is driving me crazy. Just reject me or let me know I’m waitlisted or *something*

  8. Alright guys... how long do we wait to get off the waitlist? I'm interviewing for a really awesome back up plan job but am also waitlisted for my dream program. I let the job know I could tell them if I was going to accept by the end of March.

PS if someone is holding an A&M counseling psych offer and isn't planning on accepting please let it  go ?
