  1. Why did I check the website right before bed? Ahhh, fml I'm not going to sleep now ?
  2. Fastlane is still down for me on my phone and computer.
  3. ??? Is it over yet?
  4. And so it begins...
  5. I would check Fastlane. I got an honorable mention last year and didn't receive an email until about 10 the next morning. Actual award emails go out sooner, I believe, but the results are listed as soon as maintenance is complete. I know because I was refreshing every 10 seconds last year around 2 eastern time and checked my name immediately. ?
  6. There is no expectation of completion for your research proposal. Especially in the case of undergraduate students who have no clue where they will be attending graduate school when they apply, it would be impractical for the NSF to expect otherwise. The exercise is designed to determine your potential as a researcher by testing your ability to form a coherent proposal based on current literature. As far as I'm aware, as long as you remain in good standing with your graduate program there is no check-in process with the NSF. I'm curious if anyone else has heard otherwise as my limited search just now didn't return anything.
  7. All awards and honorable mentions are made at the same time, thankfully.
  8. I would not be surprised if the date of release was not a Tuesday or a Friday but I would be very surprised if the results went up without the maintenance notification. I don't think the system allows them to upload results without taking the site offline. If they could, they wouldn't have been doing it that way for so many years. Perhaps this is why they are moving everything to a new page? I know you guys are excited. I was practically foaming at the mouth this time last year but it's wishful thinking to expect something different than the past few years. Stop refreshing fastlane and go do your homework. ??
  9. ??? Don't sell yourself short! We need to understand our charismatic mega fauna too! I'm an ecologist at heart. Your research is often extrapolable to micro systems and communities and vice versa.
  10. I actually applied under biological sciences. There wasn't really an engineering component to my proposal and I applied to mostly microbiology programs. I ended up accepting an offer from the Northwestern Civil and Environmental Engineering department. Northwestern doesn't have a traditional micro program and luckily I took enough math and comp sci in undergrad to squeeze in. Your project sounds interesting, similar to the freshwater microbial ecology studies I might work on. It's fascinating what we are learning about microbial communities and increasing our ability to harness these systems will be important in the coming decades.
  11. It's funny because I applied last year during my senior year of undergrad and refreshed Fastlane for about two weeks straight. I was writing my senior thesis and taking 20 credits of classes and definitely had better things to focus on. It was the perfect tool for procrastination. I took a gap year this year to travel and apply to schools which gave me the added benefit of a third chance to apply to NSF. But I haven't thought about it once since I submitted until the past couple days. My project looks at ruminant microbiology and seeks to define the host genetic effect vs microbial control on phenotypic variability in methane emission of ruminant mammals. I realized I didn't want to work with animals though, so I will not be continuing that line of research. I will likely end up working in a lab focused on microbial ecology in water sanitation and resource reclamation but I was accepted to my program without the recommendation of a specific adviser so I'm keeping my options open based on advice from my undergraduate research adviser. There are projects in multiple labs I could see myself working on and I want to make sure I fit in the lab before I choose it.
  12. Not all maintenance messages precede GRFP announcements but all GRFP announcements are preceded by maintenance messages. Has anyone heard anything on a delayed reward announcement this year due to the government shutdown? I wasn't expecting an announcement until mid April, but the buzz around here has me nervous.
