  1. Congratulations...I look forward to meeting you in August.
  2. Sorry for the late response. There are no graduate assistantships for the DrPH students. We do have a program graduate assistant who works with some of the professors, but that person is usually a Ph.D. candidate. Good luck with your admissions decision.
  3. For all those waiting on UNC, decisions typically come out during the 2nd or 3rd week of March. I was accepted to both UNC and JHU. I can tell you that the cohort model at UNC gives you a strong support group to get you through the rigorous coursework and research. There are pros and cons for every program, but UNC was the right choice for me (and my entire cohort).
  4. @Hugs4PugsJHU and UNC are 2 of the most competitive programs. As such, GRE scores are a significant factor. With that said, however, both programs take a holistic view of each applicant. My best advice for someone with relatively low GRE scores is to cast a wide net. Presuming that you demonstrate a strong GPA history (not sure how your vet school graded, P/F, H/P/L?), you should be in the mix. Remember that any discipline that is more research-oriented will value your GRE quant score. If your dissertation focus is on ES, then there will be a good deal of data analysis.
  5. Folks...just a word of advice: don't put all your eggs into a single basket. The most competitive programs (UNC, JHU, etc.) have acceptance rates in the 10% range, so be sure to apply to multiple programs. You should approach this process as you did for college...reach, target and safety schools. Good luck to all as you submit your applications and, hopefully, get interviews. Some programs interview on-site, but most do phone or video interviewing.
  6. Hi Ash...I'd prod the doctor sooner than later. You can also resend the recommendation request through SOPHAS if he can't find the original.
  7. DSB...as I'm sure you know, a Ph.D. and a DrPH are very different degrees. With that said, your quant score will be more of a factor for entry to Ph.D. programs, as they are research-oriented. As such, you will need to apply a given set of mathematical skills (primarily high-level statistical analysis) within your dissertation and coursework. Additionally, doctoral programs are seeking students who have a good idea of what they want to study, so applying to both the DrPH and the Ph.D. at JHU might send a message that you aren't sure about your direction (which may be the case). My best advice is to choose a direction and go for it...do you want to be an academic researcher or pursue a degree that will allow you to focus on applied research? The answer to that question will tell you what programs to focus on.
  8. Hi Ash...just let your statement of purpose flow from your motivations and interests. It should explain your desire to pursue a doctorate, as well as what your research interests might be (if you have an area of study that you can clearly articulate). My best advice is to be genuine and not write to impress...these are read by faculty members who can tell the difference! Good luck with your writing.
  9. Hello all...I'm a current student in the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health DrPH program and am happy to answer questions you may have as you go through the application and selection process.
  10. I was accepted at UIC but chose to attend another program. Hoping that means an opening will be created for someone on the UIC waitlist. Good luck to all who are still waiting.
  11. This is indicative of the unique nature of. doctoral admissions. Doctoral students are chosen by the faculty and, therefore, they can only recommend admission to the Office of Admissions. You have to wait for the official letter from Admissions before you’re actually admitted. The process varies by school, but it’s usually a 2 step process.
