    Update: I am received an email from Cornell that they are delaying the notification of their FLAS recipients. Supposedly they will try to send something out mid-week.

    Thank you! And what does your friend study? I was actually notified that I got FLAS at Madison! I am over the moon, but I unfortunately I have another funding package at Syracuse that I can't turn down. Maybe Madison in the future! Have you heard from GT?

    Additional update: I received word that I am a finalist for FLAS at UW Madison! Hope this might be able to help gauge others' decision timelines. However, with this covid-19 crisis, I bet things are slowing down with award decisions.

    Congrats on Georgetown! From my knowledge, FLAS is only a one academic year award. For additional years, you would have to reapply. I'm not sure that this is a universal standard, but that is what I have heard from my schools and have read from other posts. Also it might vary between schools as to how they dispense their awards and if previous awardees can get preference or do not. I would contact GT's FLAS Coordinator or someone in your department and ask about some specifics.

    I just got an email from Cornell saying that they have received my application and faculty will begin to review them today. Hopefully the process goes quickly!!!

    I wish I could but unfortunately financials (and future financials/debt) aren't something that I have the privilege to step away from. ?

    Congratulations on Stanford, that's incredible!!!! I'm super excited for you on this. I know FLAS usually takes a while and from what I have heard and read, it doesn't seem to normally come with the acceptance offer. I would give it a little longer, although I know how TOUGH it is to keep waiting, because you might be surprised!

    so I was accepted into all three great M.A. programs that I applied for. However, right now I have funding for only one and I am doubtful that my external funding with come through for my other two. I want to plan campus visits but I need some counsel. Would you recommend that I visit all 3 even thought some might end up not being financially viable options? I work full time and it will be difficult to use weekends/take days off to travel to all three, not even talking about the cost if I can't be reimbursed at all. Should I just plan to visit the one school that has offered me funding and that I'm leaning towards? Or give the others a chance? I've talked about this with several people and I have received conflicting answers. Some say to save my money and time and visit just the one I am mainly leaning towards while other say that I could visit and fall in love the school and consider going even if the money isn't there. All thoughts and experiences are welcome!

    Thanks, I appreciate it! I am in a similar boat as well, I do not want to take out loans (especially for a 2 year degree) and I don't have the financials at all to afford it without funding. Fingers crossed for the both of us!!!

    I agree with the above post, you can absolutely decline! Not everyone is able to do a visit so I would say it's not too uncommon or strange to accept before a campus visit. If Program A is really aligned with your interests and gives you funding, I don't think there would be anything wrong with accepting. Especially if you have no third option. Also, you could email Program B that you have already narrowed down your selected and you appreciate the opportunity for a visit, you'll no longer need it to be planned. Most places are fine with that! I work in higher ed admin and sometimes those emails, especially when nothing has been planned yet, are a relief for whoever is coordinating everything lol congrats on the acceptances btw!

    I was accepted and very strong considering accepting them!! Could you tell me a little about your experience in the city? And how you feel about the school and its culture, resources, etc.? I am trying to coordinate a visit, but unfortunately my work schedule limits me to only weekends.

    I'm hoping the best for you!! That stipend is so crucial. I'm going into my grad program in fall 2020 and I KNOW i'm going to end up working a lot for money reasons.

    Best of luck to you! I am also only going for an MA right now and going in second year. I am worried that the notification will come close or past the decision deadline..so I hope it comes in March. A girl can definitely dream! If you want, keep me posted on when your notification comes in. I know it's a school to school basis, but might provide a general ballpark to settle my impatience haha

    @Nikita S. Oh wow, I can't believe we have so much overlap! Great to see you on both of my threads and congratulations, that's wonderful! I was accepted into all three programs (UWM, SU, and Cornell) by some divine intervention and I am faced with a privileged, yet still difficult decision. FLAS will be crucial for me because I cannot afford Madison or Cornell without it. I did receive full funding from Syracuse though, which is an incredible fortune. Do you have any idea of when FLAS notifications could come in for Cornell? Where are you leaning towards and what are your specific interests in SE Asia? Perhaps we have overlap there too!

    Fantastic!! I was offered acceptance and am strongly considering the program! However, I am hesitant to officially accept until I hear about FLAS for Filipino because I do not think I can attend without funding. What is your situation like? Great to "meet" you btw and best of luck with FLAS!

    I was wondering if anyone else out there is enrolled in/applying for grad programs for Southeast Asia. I am applying for master's programs for Fall 2020 and also summer language programs like SEASSI and the IU Language Workshop. I know I didn't cast my net as wide as I should have, but I am applying for Cornell's Asian Studies M.A., Wisconsin-Madison's M.A. in Southeast Asian Studies, and Syracuse's M.A. in Religion. I am also applying for FLAS funding for Cornell and Madison. I am very nervous about how competitive the programs are, not mind-blowingly high GRE scores, how likely FLAS funding is, and just general acceptance stress. I'm interested in hearing from anyone who has experience or is going through the same process! Update: I was accepted into Madison's program!

    wow, thank you for all this incredible information @xypathos! This is really insightful. I just heard from Syracuse and they want me to do a Skype interview with a graduate committee on Friday. I have my fingers-crossed! Also, if I get accepted and ultimately choose SU (their masters funding package is definitely a strong selling point), then I will take you up on that offer.

    Hey everyone, I wanted to start a thread for people applying for FLAS (foreign language area studies) funding for the upcoming summer 2020 session or the 20-21 academic year. I'm applying for Filipino at Cornell University and University of Wisconsin-Madison. Anyone else applying? We could suffer together and keep each other posted on notification status. Anyone who has received a FLAS award before, would you be so kind to give some general insight? I know the whole system is decentralized and different on a school-to-school basis, but just some ideas about how you did it and when you got the acceptance/rejection.

    I just received an email for a Skype interview with the graduate committee at Syracuse. I'm applying for the masters program and am surprised by the interview! Anyone have any virtual interview tips? What should I prepare for? What's really good to mention/emphasize to them? I have done phone interviews before, but never a video chat one.

    I'm applying for the M.A. in Religion at Syracuse, but also M.A. programs for Southeast Asian Studies at Cornell and Wisconsin-Madison with concentrations in religion/history of religion. Excited, but also deeply wracked with stress and nerves on a daily basis lol. my background is a double major undergrad in history and religious studies (with a broad concentration of "asia") from an R1 university that isn't super well-known but it is a good school.
