  1. Your profile seems to be a strong one, except that you have not mentioned your GRE and TOEFL/IETLS scores. With decent GRE scores with Quant scores >=165 I believe that you can apply directly to a PhD program in the US. Since you are interested in applied statistics, biostats, bayesian modelling etc. I would suggest that you can go through the biostats departments in usnews and go through the faculty research interests. Now for international students, biostats programs can be very competitive and would be wise to apply to only some top 15 biostats programs. Also I believe that you can leverage your internship at the pharma firm to tailor your SOP and probably get a letter of recommendation from some colleague at the organization. You can consider schools in the range of Pittsburgh, Florida etc.
  2. Though there are others here in this forum who can comment better than me, but I think that you have quite a strong math background to be accepted into some decent Stats PhD programs. I believe that you have a solid chance at programs beyond the top 10 stats PhD programs and some top ranked Biostats PhD programs (except the top 3). Also very few people have research experience before they apply for a PhD so I dont think that's going to be a problem. I would also add in some core stats courses like Stats inference as well if its possible.
  3. Hi all, I was wondering if anyone could give me some insights on TAMU stats department. I do not have any focused research direction and fairly open. It would be great if anyone can share some idea about say necessary coursework, prelims, research output, reputation, graduate placements etc. I know that it is a fairly big program and ranked ~20 according to US News (heard that this is irrelevant though), but what does this mean? Also I am open to hear from others about any other aspects about the program Thanks in advance
  4. Hi, I am not an expert in graduate school admission process, but I do not think that your background in medicine and low grades should matter that much. You need to be more specific about the math courses that you have taken. For example if you have taken or plan to take advanced analysis and proof based linear algebra courses or not and how you have or how you fare. Also courses like mathematical statistics, inference etc on your transcript would be looked at during the admission process. I would say that you could really use your unusual background in medicine and your interest in biostats to build a strong SOP. Also you would need to sit for your GRE and TOEFL and have decent scores in them. Publication in a decent peer reviewed journal is definitely a plus and also how strong your recommendation letters are and are from whom. With all this being said, I understand that your application will not depend solely on your GPA but the entire package of GPA, GRE, TOEFL, SOP, Recommendation letters, Research experience and most importantly how much aligned you are to the research interests of the faculty members of the department you are applying to.
  5. Heard from a Yale biostats professor that they are not accepting any international student because of lack of funding in the department. The university supports international students and hence at the moment cannot support any international student. Sad to hear this though!
  6. Anyone heard anything from Yale Biostats? I saw acceptances from Yale Stats but not much from the Biostats department?
  7. This is what bothers me as well. I have heard from some people that GRE is an important metric to weed out applicants whereas from others I have heard that it does not carry too much weight in the application process. Its confusing and even stressful as @statenth mentioned above that many programs are even doing away with GRE. Oh well I guess I have no other option but to wait and see what happens.
  8. Dear all, I am an international applicant (from India) to the PhD program in Statistics/Biostatistics for Fall 2021 session. A little background about me: I completed my undergraduate in 2015, majoring in statistics with minor in mathematics and economics and my masters in statistics in 2017, both with US equivalent GPA of 4.0. Both my undergrad and masters universities are quite reputed (not ISI) and I believe I have decent mathematical preparation. After that, till now I have been working as a biostatistician at a pharmaceutical company. Along with my job, I have been involved in some academic research projects(not full time though). One of my research project is a collaboration work with professors from Yale biostatistics, Boston University statistics and Tel Aviv University statistics. Now I was asked by the professor at Yale to apply to the PhD program at Yale and I received recommendation letters from all other research collaborators and one of my master's professor. Yes, I am of course most interested in the Yale program because the work that I am doing is new and can be extended further into my doctoral research (perhaps) Although I have been involved in several research projects and presented talks or posters at international conferences about these projects, I have not been to get any publication as of yet (on the verge of submitting one and organizing for another submission currently). However, my GRE score is a bit on the low side 151V/163Q/4.5AWA and due to the pandemic, I could not retake the test. So, I was wondering how important GRE scores are for PhD applications? Now I know that the professor from Yale is not in the admissions committee, though I received an LOR from the same professor. Will my scores lead to automatic rejection? Particularly since the Ivy leagues are very selective in all respect. Thanks in advance for your replies
  9. Hi everyone! Hope you all are safe and doing well! Wanted to ask those who have accepted an offer for Fall 2020, whether they have received any communication from the university/department regarding the starting of Fall session due to the current pandemic? I have heard from few of my friends that their program has decided on the two option: 1. Start online classes but will have to pay in-state tuition (Although their programs are fully funded and as long as they dont reach the the US they cannot receive their stipend and tuition waiver) 2. Defer their admission to either Spring 2021 or Fall 2021. All other conditions of their offer would still be valid if they defer admission. I have accepted my offer at TAMU, however, I have not yet received any such communication, except for the response from the department that they plan to begin in-person classes in Fall. Is there anyone else who have received such communication or any other advice from their programs? PS: As I am an International student and currently the US embassy is closed and not issuing student visa, apart from ban on International travel currently I wonder if it would be possible for me to start in-person classes if at all in-person classes begin in Fall.
  10. Hi! Sorry for posting this in an unrelated forum. Can you tell me what are the top 20 schools for statistics? I have seen this in multiple forums and was wondering if you are referring to the USNews rankings for statistics?
  11. Hey! Yes, I am waiting on UNC Biostats as well. I emailed them a long time back and then they had replied back that they would send out their decisions soon but then no communication after that. Well, at this point I do not have much hope and as I saw in this portal that many people have already received admits and there is even a Facebook page created by the accepted students
  12. I think that they do send offers even after April 15 deadline, provided there are vacancies. I heard back from one department that they do not have any vacancies as of yet, since most people have not replied back with their decision. If any position remains vacant after the April 15 deadline, then they would send the offers to those on the waitlist. But I found it to be quite weird, as they also told me to commit to other offers as there is no certainty of vacancies and if I am offered a position I can then consider my options
  13. Hi! Any news from UNC Biostatistics? I have not heard back anything informative from them only the generic, "Applications are still under review and hope to be completed soon".
  14. No I haven't heard back from Iowa State as of yet. I sent an email to the Graduate coordinator last week, however, I got an out of office automatic reply. I will try again this week
  15. Thanks! I emailed the coordinator and followed the steps provided and I received the official acceptance letter with funding details On a different note, I am still awaiting decision from UNC Biostats. I have not received rejection nor have I been informed of wait-list as of yet. So I am wondering is it a possibility that I am on the waitlist or I will not receive any email (As it seems some universities just dont care to reply back)? I emailed the Graduate director and he said that the committee is still reviewing applications. Can anyone give me some ideas as to what I can expect?
