  1. I haven't completed my practicum but have everything lined up to start it this summer. You are responsible for finding a supervisor, which I see as a freedom! You can choose to complete your practicum wherever you'd like (within reason). There is a practicum director and lots of support staff to help steer you along the way though and I find them very helpful. Hope that helps!
  2. Hello! Even though they don't have particular branches, I would say yes, you can definitely focus your program towards a particular sub-field. UBC is particularly strong on the epi side of things so that might suit you quite well!
  3. For anyone who is deciding (or has already decided) on the UBC MPH program, I am currently in the program and am happy to answer any questions if you have them! Feel free to dm me or just post here.
  4. Hello! From my experience, it's usually the latter. Most schools sent out a batch of early acceptances as top candidates have a higher chance of turning the offer down (i.e. competing med school applications, other MPH program). Then they send out enough acceptances to fill capacity along with a large enough batch of waitlists. People who don't make that bigger waitlist are then rejected. Some people on the waitlist who end up right on the cusp might not find out they are accepted/rejected until early summer even (mind you, this will only be like 3 or 4 people per school), after all the waves of acceptances are sent out.
  5. Sorry I'm from out west so I applied to only western schools (UBC, SFU, UVic and USask). I can't recall when the schools you applied for sent their letters out. I would recommend taking a peek at MPH Canada thread from last year to see where those schools come up.
  6. Hi everyone, Current MPH student here. From what I can remember of my experience applying last year, most schools didn't start accepting people until mid-March at the earliest. I was accepted to 4 programs and got my first on March 20 (UBC) and didn't get my last (SFU) until May. Many who were waitlisted didn't get notified until sometimes June. I realize it's a very long and anxiety-ridden time to be waiting for but be assured they will come!
  7. I applied to UVic last year with a single-spaced CV and was accepted. Not sure if it was in spite of the CV formatting or not but they didn't decline it or anything. Hope that helps.
  8. Hello, I would say that if you get your supervisors from your community health educator assistant and/or marketing assistant jobs to give you references, and complement that with one more from someone who knows you well in a professional or academic capacity (doesn't necessarily have to be in public health) you'll be just fine. Your grades are excellent but I would really focus on whatever experience you have in your letter of intent and just let the transcripts do the talking for you with regards to your GPA. Hope that helps!
  9. You don't necessarily need extensive research experience to have a competitive application if you make up for it with other qualifications. For example, I happened to have very little in the way of experience in the field of public health but I have an M.Sc. so I made up for it with a bunch of research experience. Hope this helps!
  10. Hi everyone! I was accepted to the MPH program at UBC this year and will be starting in the coming week. I also applied to USask, SFU and UVic last year and was accepted to all of them. I found last years thread to be very helpful so I want to offer what limited experience and information I have if any of you have any questions! Please ask! One common question I will answer in advance is: "Here is my GPA, extracurriculars and employment background... do you think I will get in?" I cannot answer any of those with much confidence this different programs look for slightly different applicant types and even within a program, the backgrounds of each person varies a lot.
  11. Hi all, Just an update from me, I received an offer of admission yesterday from UVic! I've now heard back from 3 of the 4 schools I applied to (UVic, USask and UBC) and am still waiting to hear from SFU.
  12. For all those who are wondering about USask, I received an offer of admission to the on-campus MPH program this afternoon. The deadline to notify is March 27th. I personally think I will decline this one so that's one more spot for someone else!
  13. Thank you! I received acceptance today about 4 hours ago. I was notified of my offer of admission via e-mail and was directed to the Grad portal for more information and to accept the offer. In looking at the admission stats from previous years at UBC, it looks like the offer admission in many round considering they gave out 56 offers last year but only had 26 new registrations.
  14. Sure! Graduated BSc Honours Biology at UCalgary (GPA: 3.61/4) then went on to do a MSc in Biology at UBC (GPA: 4.0) where I won a pretty good research grant and presented at 2 conferences. I was an aspiring med student during my undergrad so my volunteer experience is copious, but is mostly in primary care/speaking as opposed to public health: - Medical First Responder with St John Ambulance as well as a student-run team at Ucalgary - Volunteered at a Hospice House for about a year - Taught classes on science/evolution at churches in my area (it's a long story haha) - Co-founded a podcast that critically analyzes social and societal phenomena - 3+ years as a research assistant throughout my Master's and undergrad - Student rep in residence during my undergrad - Volunteer at the local homeless shelter where I also work closely with the supervisor to develop training standards for staff and other volunteers Reference letters I think were another big help for me: - My supervisor who happens to be an associate VP of Research at UBC - My lab manager who knows me very well and is now an associate professor - The supervisor at the homeless shelter with whom I have been developing training standards I have a feeling the MSc was pretty important because I was required to complete and successfully defend a thesis in the field of neuroscience. I also in final drafts of publishing a paper from my results. This shows a pretty strong research and statistics background. Let me know if you have any other questions!
