No, very true, I don't blame you! I got a surprise call after my Harvard admit from my POI (we hadn't spoken on the phone previously), and I definitely flubbed that, so any time at all to prepare is so preferable.

I don't even know how to go about deciding really, now that I'm here.

It will be especially difficult because I feel like I would know almost immediately if I were able to attend an open house just because you get a sense of the space and the people and what it’s actually like to interact and have dinner with them etc.

Hopefully the virtual open day activities will be somewhat helpful? I also know a lot of people who went to Columbia who can give insight but it’s kind of like blind choice almost without being able to visit

Did you interview with him? He's very nice, honestly. I'm speaking with him in about 20 minutes.

Yeah I interviewed with him but it would be nice to let the moment of acceptance soak in before speaking is all haha. I guess they’re a little late in the game compared to other schools so maybe they want to provide info early.

I’m a little overwhelmed by the amount of meetings I have and decisions I need to make. I was so unprepared to be in this position!

Has anyone else applied to Princeton's Art and Archaeology Department? Has anyone heard back or learned how many students they're taking?

I also haven't heard from Princeton but they never do interviews and it seems like rejections and acceptances go out on the same day typically. I had contact with three faculty in the fall and have considered reaching out to them but I'm not sure how helpful it will be or if they will respond.

    @ebp and @lingc35

If you were to be accepted to both Columbia (which seems likely given your upcoming interviews) and Harvard, do you know which one you would attend? Asking as someone who was waitlisted at Harvard...

I have no idea at this point especially with other schools still pending decisions. I definitely won't make any decision before the virtual open houses of each school which so far for me are in early March.

Amazing, congratulations! Do you have a preference for a program based on your research interests?

I honestly don't know given that I wasn't expecting to hear from any of these schools, let alone be accepted so I need to fully wrap my head around what each of them have to offer academically.

The advice I've heard is that you should consider which schools give you the most money overall so I'm waiting to get all of the financial aid packages before really considering overall intellectual fit.

Congrats! So it sounds like an informal interview just to get to know you a bit more regardless of your acceptance. That's so exciting. What other programs did you apply/get accepted to if you don't mind me asking?

Berkeley is a dream for me. I'm still holding out hope!

I only applied to one cms department which was Berkeley.  I also applied to Harvard art history (accepted), Columbia art history (interview), UChicago English (waitlist), CUNY art history (interview), and Princeton art history (haven't heard).

Best of luck! I hope you hear soon.

Saw someone post an acceptance for Berkeley’s film studies! Wondering if it was someone on this thread (congrats if it was!!)?. Did not hear back myself and wondering if all acceptances were sent out today.

Hi, yes for some reason it wouldn't let me select film and media studies under the field when I submitted my result.

I got an email last night saying that my official letter and funding package would arrive in early March and that they would love to chat soon over zoom to give me more information.

I'm very shocked at how admissions is playing out for me. The schools I thought I didn't stand a chance at (mainly because of fit and the things faculty are interested in) are the schools that I've been accepted to so far. Very strange.

To those accepted to Harvard: congrats, you are awesome! ? What are your fields?

Modern and Contemporary, focus on time-based media and photography oddly enough. Definitely wasn't thinking it was a great fit but I guess I was wrong!

Congrats to you! Will this be the second interview with Columbia for you?
(And yeah, hope to see you!)

Technically the third which is odd. I had two separate informal chats with POIs who are not on the committee a couple of weeks ago and so now this is my first chat with AdCom. Honestly, who knows what could happen but based on what people have told me its pretty likely that we're in. They also don't have a waitlist this year FYI, not sure if you had heard that

I still haven’t heard anything from Duke at all, but I did have a big day: Columbia interview invite and a Harvard admit!! I got an email to view the portal.

I also have a Columbia interview and was just accepted at Harvard! Good luck on Columbia and I suppose I'll see you on zoom whenever Harvard has an open day etc ha

That's curious, I just checked and there wasn't an update. Still just tells me my application was submitted and is being processed. Don't know if that means anything?

Thank you for letting me know you got an update!

CUNY sent out an email to waitlisted and accepted students about open day already but we haven't gotten anything in the portal yet confirming acceptance or waitlist so its possible that you were either accepted or waitlisted and they somehow messed up your email.

Having an interview is definitely a good sign, so congrats anyway! How did it go? Did you contact any of these two profs ahead of time (before application) and mention their names in your SOP? I didn't apply Columbia but I am curious to know their application process. When will you hear their decisions?

It went well. They're only accepting 5 students this year, typically it's 15. I contacted the two professors that interviewed me before I submitted and they both said they were not taking students but I applied anyway and I did mention them in my application. So they ended up liking my application and being involved in the admissions process. Typically, based on stats on results (the link that martiday sent), it looks like Columbia sends out acceptances around mid to late Feb and rejections at the beginning of March

Are you referring to one of the post that a student received an interview request in this thread? If yes, it seems that it's one particular professor who wants to chat rather than a committee. But I don't know the details. However, if you say that Columbia is doing interviews this year, I think Princeton might do the same because of COVID.

Yeah, it was me who posted. i had an interview with two profs in the department but I suppose you're right that no one else has posted about it so maybe it is just a particular case and they aren't doing interviews for everyone

Hi everyone, it's so good to see an Art History thread!

I wonder if anyone who applied for the 2021 Art History Ph.D. program at Princeton or Harvard receives an interview request yet? If so, would you mind sharing your interview questions and the experience? Does the department actually conduct interviews? Is it possible that you will receive an acceptance letter without an interview? When will they send out the rejection or acceptance letters?

    Many thanks!

Based on former stats Princeton doesn't do interviews and sends our acceptances around Feb 7 or 8th. It could be different this year because of COVID etc so they might be delayed. They also might be doing interviews given that Columbia (which historically has not done interviews) did interviews this year it seems but I doubt it.

Hi all, I received an invitation to the Michigan prospective weekend in mid February. Any idea how many people attend versus how many are actually admitted? Don't want to get my hopes up!

Also, for the Columbia interviewee -- what's your field? Good luck!

    modern and contemporary, film/media/photography !

Congrats to you, that's great news! Best of luck in the interview. Do you mind sharing what period of art history/subfield you are interested in?

I think I put contemporary though my project is also beyond that. But I'm primarily working in photography, film, video, and new media so that gives you an idea.

The email was a little strange though so I'm not sure if it's indicative of how other POI's are doing it. I've heard Columbia never did interviews in the past so it might just be this person in particular wanting to do an interview...not sure.

I did, though I have yet to receive a follow up message. I truly have no idea how to interpret it, so of course I'm assuming the worst... Did you receive confirmation?

Also, don't let my over the top anxiety freak you out, and good luck!

    No confirmation either!

someone just responded to me on results saying that it means we’re on the long list, those who actually get an interview are shortlist and then they accept about half of those they interview.

so we can be proud we at least made first round!

That's very exciting! What program is that for?

It's for UChicago English. It's only strange because the email says "possible interview for admissions" and sends a doodle poll out for availability for interview but then at the end of the email says that they department "cannot interview all applicants at this stage of admissions". It says I should know by the end of the day today if I am indeed being asked to interview.

Though I explored the 2020 applicant thread and it looks like not everyone who applied gets this email it's still strange that they ask people for availability who they don't plan to interview? I'm nervous about what it means if I don't get a slot?
