Hi all, Figured I’d start a thread for this years cycle. Everyone excited to apply? Nervous? I for one am really looking forward to applying. Still cutting down on my list of schools every day, as different websites are updating which PIs are taking student this cycle. Let’s help each other!

This 10000%. I was thinking that I can’t be the only one who thinks that it’s incredibly rude to tell people to accept or decline their offer ASAP because they’re on a waiting list. I understand that some schools are top choices and it’s frustrating when you’re placed on a waitlist, but pressuring people to make decisions helps no one. Be kind.

Someone posted in the acceptances thread that they were just pulled off the waitlist yesterday and accepted.

Here’s some good progress - I was browsing clinical psych PhD program websites and saw that the university of Arizona already waived the GRE for this upcoming cycle. Hoping other programs follow suit. “GRE - Due to COVID-19 considerations, GRE scores and GRE subject scores are not required for the Fall 2021 application, and will not be considered in our selection process (Updated 02/23/2021)” https://psychology.arizona.edu/academics/apply-graduate-program Anyone know any other programs besides UF and SBU that are participating in the GRE removal this upcoming cycle?

I’m sorry ? there are so many qualified applicants that get screwed over in this process. I think this year, a make or break factor was that some PIs were looking for applicants who had direct research experience in their field rather than those who didn’t. It’s not the most fair thing, because it’s really difficult for applicants to get direct experience. I’ve heard this ring true for a lot of different applicants; this can be a make-or-break type of thing. I’m super nervous to apply next cycle ?

Hi all, I figured a separate thread like this would be helpful in case anyone would like to know the timelines for programs sending acceptances/waitlists/rejections. We can follow the similar format of the Interview Invites thread, as follows: School: Type: (PhD/PsyD; Clinical/Counseling) Track: (Child, Adult, General, etc.) Acceptance/Waitlist/Rejection: Type of Notification: Email from POI, phone call, etc. Date Notified: DM for POI: Yes/No Be kind, and respect those who might not want to share their PI initials. I don’t think you’re being rude! I just wish that more faculty would take into consideration the barriers that the clinical psych application has (maybe even try to fix them?). I just personally am dumbfounded when I see people with good experience, coupled with passion and drive, get rejected from programs that are a good fit. It’s definitely not an easy path by any means, and I really don’t know how we can fix it without more funding. Of course, we can actually start to look holistically at applicants, and the removal of the GRE this cycle was a good first start. It also doesn’t help when people get into programs solely due to connections - but I assume we can’t do anything about that, as it is a common thread in almost every field in academia ?.

This is very helpful from a Professor's viewpoint, thank you. I just wonder if faculty remember that it's difficult for individuals to get research experience that is considered "competitive" if they went to a SLAC or something like that. It's a barrier for certain people to get "meaningful" research experience - and it's even more difficult to obtain a position in a lab or hospital, say, that is exactly in line with the professor's research interests that they might want to work with in grad school. I just wish it wasn't so hyper-competitive. It's sad to me when I see applicants on their 3rd, 4th round of applications who have put the work in and have the passion for it, and get rejected from programs.

Rotations would be a dream. I know we're supposed to have a general idea of our research interests, but rotations would make it so much easier for students.

Clinical psych admissions have always been extremely competitive, but I think this cycle brought it to a whole new level. I have a feeling that most programs will have a 1-5% acceptance rate this cycle due to the extreme uptick in applications. However, it's still extremely competitive and it always will be. I really wish something could change, but I think it's all about funding at this point.

Yes! I have a list of 19 clinical programs I want to apply to (it’ll probably get cut down depending on which PI’s are taking students).

I literally don’t blame you. It’s a ridiculously stressful (and expensive) process - who wants to go through that 3+ times?!?

100000% completely agree. I’m nervous to apply next year because I feel like there are people applying with 5+ pubs, 10+poster presentations, 4.0 GPA, etc etc. Do programs not know that not everyone has a pipeline to do research equally at their universities? And that finding a CRC/RA job is almost impossible without the right connections? It absolutely disadvantages diverse applicants. For a field that praises itself to be inclusive, programs have a long way to go in terms of actual inclusiveness. It’s insane how competitive it is. People shouldn’t have to apply 3+ times to get into a program. It also really sucks to know that the people most passionate about being psychologists or doing research in a specific area get denied spots in labs. Aggggh sorry rant over.

Website says that interview invites will go out January 31st who did you apply to work with?

One student? So only 1 PI is taking a student? Oh my goodness, that is insane.

I honestly don’t think so... does Pitt’s website say anything about interview dates? From what I’ve gathered from talking to professionals, if you can’t find it on the website, it’s fair game to ask about. I would definitely reach out in a few days or next week and ask for an update or if all interview invitations have been sent out if you can’t find it anywhere. Keep it short and sweet and thank them! Or maybe ask the admissions coordinator?

I’d say give it another week and email her to ask for updates if you haven’t gotten any information yet. Or at the end of this week, maybe!
