Same too ! Got PGSD, waitlisted for OGS and nothing for FRQNT. Funny, at least we got the most prestigious one !

To everyone who is wondering, I was told by FRQ that no second offers will be made. So no waitlist. Makes 0 sense and very frustrating but ya

Hello, everyone,
I followed the forum for a few days and thought that maybe my experience would be useful for some people. Yesterday, I was fortunate to received CGS-D confirmation (Geosciences committee 168). Last year (as an incoming student) I did not get anything, and I was actually pretty far down the ranking, so you can imagine that my hopes of getting anything this year were relatively low.
For those interested in getting an idea of personal profiles, I had been working for 4 years after my M. Eng. and I had 4 papers (3 as a first author, 1 as the second author). I did my Masters at Polytechnique Montreal (3.92 GPA), and my undergrad at a small university in Latin America you will never find in any sort of ranking list. However, my profile had not really changed this year from the previous year. So, what happened?
Well, I am not sure how much each factor influenced the overall strength of my application, but here it goes:
- Changed committee, even though I am a civil engineer by training, I chose this time to go with the geoscience committee based on the specific area of application.
- Added more minor prizes and awards from previous programs, even those with no monetary value.
- Really worked a lot on the proposal. I took a bunch of passes at it, with 5 people reading it with very substantial comments and changes.
- My supervisor made several comments to the “previous contribution statement”. Beyond focusing on the merits of each paper/contribution on its own, she told me to try and link it as much as possible to my proposal. That involved cutting some parts that I liked, but in the end, it helps sell the argument “why are you the ideal person to carry out this project?”
I do not know how much the fact that I was already registered at the university influenced the outcome or not (i.e. applying as first year student as opposed to applying at the same time you apply for university admission). Nevertheless, given my experience, I think the actual quality of the proposal and supporting documents can play a much bigger role than the background profile (e.g.: number of peer reviewed papers, coming from a prestigious university, etc.). So, I would recommend working on making sure the different components of the application help sell the idea that you are the ideal candidate for your project, even if you feel your background profile is not the most flashy or impressive. Oh… and really, really, really work on the proposal. Conversely, a flashy profile does not guarantee anything and still needs work to make sure an application is cohesive and interesting.
I sincerely understand the disappointment many of you are experiencing (been there myself). I hope that my experience can help some of you perform better next year and hopefully get an award!
Have a good weekend!

The results page has been updated for 2022, with what looks like all levels of individual grant funding posted: http://www.frqsc.gouv.qc.ca/bourses-et-subventions/resultats-des-concours
(And I was successful!! The category I was ranked lowest in two years ago was now ranked “exceptionnel,” so it really is all about the committee and how you frame your project and experiences.)

Got my results early this afternoon - offered CGS-D! I'm beyond grateful, literally sobbing right now. My application number starts with 574 and I was in Geosciences (168).
Bit about me:
A+ average in both PhD and MSc, ~3.7GPA in undergrad. Applied in my second year (didn't have time to apply first year). I've never received NSERC before but did get QEII this year I've got about 8 combined years of experience as a TA, tutor, research assistant, or field researcher. Three published journal articles, one first author and two second author Two first author articles submitted to peer-reviewed journals Two conference presentations at international conferences (where I won awards) and two at domestic conferences I had a strong equity statement in my proposal I spoke about my political activism/union activism and how that shaped my ability to be a leader - I wasn't sure if talking politics would hurt my application but I guess it didn't! All my love to anyone else who applied this year and I hope the info I've provided is helpful!

I applied last year for PGS-D, but did not win. I ended up getting a standard letter that stated I did not win, as well as PDF with the results. The results PDF had a table based on the scores received multiplied by the weight of the section for the weighted value in the "Research and Potential" and "Relevant Experience" sections. Then it listed what rank you got out of the total number of applicants for that year.
I've included a screenshot of the table from last year (obviously results are removed because no one needs to see how poorly I did last year). Hope this helps provide some clarity.

I just received my PGS-D award! Selection committee 187 (Cellular and Molecular Biology)
Some information about me:
0 peer-reviewed contributions (literally not a single paper publication) 14 non-peer-reviewed contributions (1 database, 1 neural decoding algorithm, 12 conferences mostly provincial and international with some local) My project is really cool and highly inter-disciplinary and collaborative (broadly neuroscience but touches epigenetics, stem cell-related molecular and cellular neuroscience, electrophysiology, systems neuroscience, and computational neuroscience). My undergraduate and graduate level education all contributed a lot to my current project (undergrad in Physiology and Genetics with a strong focus in neurophysiology and stem cells, while also taking computer science courses throughout, neuroepigenetics lab research) Won a prestigious national AI case competition in a field I was unfamiliar with 3 months prior to the competition (Natural language processing and sentiment detection in scientific language to classify and organize scientific articles) I'm also highly involved in my community with a strong emphasis in scientific communication (science rendezvous, lets talk science, publish lay articles, teach high school students science, present at seniors home, podcasts) Involved in research institute student body as well as graduate student society. Through this, I helped organize an institute-wide research retreat. Developed an open access database and currently working on another one for scientific data from my lab.
You can get an award without publications!

AHHH also in 187 and I got CGS-D! I'm shaking haha. Thank you guys all for the support of the last few days (I've been a nervous wreck). I got wait listed for OGS a couple days ago so I definitely didn't see this coming. Last year, I didn't even get passed on my my school so just a reminder that you literally never know how things will work out!
In terms of CV, I have one publication, one paper about to be submitted soon, MANY extracurriculars, and 10 conferences (8 presentations).
And no, haven't received rankings.
GOOD LUCK to everyone that's still waiting!
