  1. Definitely odd - I don't like being involved in the recommendation process period. I don't even like knowing that reference requests are piling up in my referees' already cluttered inboxes. Heaven forbid they go into their spam folders!. :::breathe::
  2. love letter
  3. I would be doing the same if I didn't need updates from my advisor regarding my SOP. She asked me to revise the original, and I did and sent it to her Wednesday, but I'm sure I won't hear from her until Monday. Not that I blame her. I've done as much as I can do with filling out the mundane app info for most of my schools. And I've been in contact with most of my POIs. I have good days and bad days with the self-doubt and nervousness. Some days I'm just over the moon that I've made it this far! Well, I"m off to make some green bean casserole. Happy Thanksgiving to you... and the board :-)
  4. Soo..... How are all the 2013 applicants doing on the eve of the Thanksgiving holiday?? I'm....spent. And I'm not totally done with all my applications or the semester for that matter. I miss all the chatter. I need some updates from those on the same roller-coaster ride we call grad app season! :-)
  5. Thank you for the reply, T :-) I didn't answer the questions and I was able to submit the section without any indication of missed fields.
  6. I'm going through an online grad application and in the financial section came across these questions: Amount of personal debt (dollar value) AND Sources of Debt I've never seen this before, and I'm unclear as to why these questions are necessary? Am I required to answer them? If anyone has any information about this portion of the application, I'd love to hear it. I apologize if this topic has already been discussed.
  7. I'm so swamped with classes and teaching that I haven't had much time to worry (just) about apps. But I think that it might be this dull pain in my chest - a little reminder that it's there and waiting to pounce when the time is right. Oh and welcome Stevie and Viggo!
  8. @ LadyRara - I will probably develop some type of sickness down the road because stress does that to me - but for now, I think my brain is telling my body..."there is absolutely NO time for you to get sick!" I've contacted all prospective POIs and have gotten a decent response from most, and I have my letter writer's ready, my writing sample could use some attending to, but at the moment I'm thinking through my SOP/Research proposal. It seems that the UK programs are research proposal heavy and SOP light. I retake the GRE to see if I can improve my verbal score in the beginning of November, but I also take my comprehensive exams in early December. I'm thinking this process would be a lot easier if I didn't have to study for comp exams, TA, AND take two other classes at the same time. However, this forum tends to prove otherwise :-) I'm really looking forward to next semester when I can just teach and work on my MA thesis. Phew.
  9. Oh yes, stressing like never before. I'm TAing for the first time ever with a professor who offers no direction (thank god for other experienced TAs). I'm studying for my comp exams to be take in late November. I'm taking the GRE in November (for the second time to try and improve my initial scores - just a few points). I have two other classes that have papers and projects. And I'm applying to PhD programs (most of which have the December 1st due date). Luckily, I'm only applying to five schools. BUT, currently I'm having difficultly because I'm trying to write a research proposal before I've even written my MA thesis! Sigh. I keep telling myself, if I can get through this year, I'll be able to rule the world!
  10. My back up: Teach in the UK for any volunteer program that will have me, and maybe work on publishing a novel, or two.

  12. Welcome to all the new 2013 applicants!! I'm so glad we'll have a large group to/for support
  13. I'm not the greatest example - because my story is not typical and my situation is quite different - BUT - I got into a MA program in history with a 2.7 cumulative GPA, no thesis or research experience, and had been out of academia for 10 years. I didn't get into the best program and I wasn't funded, but my goal was to get in where I could and work my *ss off to get into a killer PhD program. I'm in a much better position now for those programs that will be the best fit for me in the future. Nothing is impossible. Listen to what your thesis adviser has to say and use it to your benefit. Learn from it. But never let anyone tell you that you can't do something.
  14. Hey, thanks for the heads up! Going to check it out.

  16. Moi! Oh wait...I thought you said modern "militant"...
  17. Welcome and glad to have you in the mix!
  18. Welcome to the party!!
  19. Ditto! And thanks for the post. There are some great resources in that list.
  20. This. I'm constantly evaluating my research interests toward this end.
  21. Hey thanks everyone! The news made my day and all your comments are icing on the cake! Seriously, oseirus and all the other lovely people here on the gradcafe boards, I formally extend an open invitation to anyone who'd like to get away for a few days in LV. My boyfriend and I may not live close to the Strip (everyone assumes that if you live in Vegas you reside IN a casino or ON the Strip) but we have a guest room and clean sheets. Just give me a heads up to make sure I'll be here! As I'm making my plans in England for the summer, I've come to realize how important it is for grad students to stick together and help one another out, especially when travelling! Now back to doing something academic.
  22. OK, so this is big news for me. I received a GAship starting the Fall semester! I've been paying for my MA with loans, so I'm ecstatic. I know many of you are old hats at the joys of TAing/GAing... but I was passed over so often I was beginning to get a complex. And even though it was given to me because someone else declined it, I'm confident that it meant I was just next on the list..and not LAST on the list. In other news...my semester is finally OVER! Now to start prepping for those apps. Why do I always feel guilty if I'm not DOING something scholastic? Any of you feel that way?
  23. Welcome! Glad to have another ambitious hopeful in our 2013 group!
  24. Great news! According to previous posts, this should really bump you up in the competition for scholarships.
