Good luck! You're almost there! :)

  3. That is just wrong. I'm sorry annieca. I do think your achievements and other letters may offset that nonsense though. I know LORs are important to adcomms, but as to which ones they value most - I'm not sure.
  4. I'm already in debt from my undergrad and MA, so I'm done with loans. The only way I'll be able to go to any of the universities I applied to in the UK will be through internal or external scholarships. Most of the international scholarships I'll apply for require an offer of admission first. Thus, the process of applying is even more agonizing. I'll be overjoyed to get admitted, but then I'll be competing with many for limited funding. There seem to be more funding options for an MA in the UK. That may be a plan B for me as well.
  5. This for sure! My Academia.edu page got a number of hits after I went to a conference and also after I submitted a couple apps. But I did find that a POI had searched for me on Linked In. They show who has viewed your profile. I'm not sure the POI knew of this feature. I did Google my name to see what comes up and sure enough Linked-In was the first listing followed by Twitter and Facebook, but I have a simple headshot photo for those. It's actually a good thing I have a photo because fifth on my list is the mugshot of a woman with my same EXACT name on some crime website.
  6. The same thing happened to me when writing to a POI at a UK university. I wrote two emails over a span of four months and never heard anything back. I wouldn't have fixated on it if my application didn't specify contact with a potential supervisor prior to applying. This university's history department director stressed how eager their faculty was to interact with prospective students on their departmental website - so I wrote to him explaining the situation. It ended up being the best thing I ever did. Not only did he finally track down said professor (who ended up being too busy to take students and not necessarily in line with my interests anyway) but he also helped me get in contact with a couple of others in the department (and outside of it for a possible collaboration) that were more suitable and really excited about my research. The moral of the story: Email the head of the department. They are there for a reason. They know their faculty and can help you make important connections and future decisions. If I end up at that university, he's the first one I'm going to visit
  7. Lana Del Rey - Born to Die:The Paradise Album (It really is to die for :-))
  8. How exciting!! Here's to good news... Great question. I wasn't planning on it, but should we? Should we wish them a happy new year or let them know that we submitted our applications? I'd like to hear everyone's opinion.
  9. Agreed. The more applications I complete, the more I think I'm getting the hang of it - minus the annoying little typos, etc I could be wayyyy off, of course. I guess we'll see, right? Four left to go for me. A couple are complete, but I'm waiting on emails sent to admissions for clarification or verification on certain parts of the application before I hit that final submit button. Stay strong, everyone!
  10. 3 down, 4 more...it's getting easier at least :-)

  11. Thank you kindly for the clarification
  12. For my UK apps - when "the research proposal should be approximately 2-3 pages of A4" does this mean double-spaced usually? Another app says for the SOP, "a one-side A4"... Any ideas or former applicants with experience in this? I'd email them, but I don't think it would get answered prior to the Jan. 1 deadline.
  13. I'm a MA student at 35 and will (hopefully) enter a PhD program at 36. I agree with the other posters - I have a different perspective and experience only age brings. I don't take myself too seriously. And I absolutely love being able to learn from both older and younger colleagues. Congrats, HeatherC on moving forward on your educational journey
  14. I'm also working on my research prospectus for my UK schools...It really is a totally different animal, isn't it? I never thought I'd say this, but I think I'd rather write an SOP!
