You have an excellent background!! I am sure you will get a great offer somewhere! Keep your head up! Which programs did you apply to at JHU?
-
I feel ya. Hopefully we find out this week!
-
Still nothing for me! No interview invite or anything lol.
-
Hey! I interviewed for JHU HPM (HSR stream) for the PhD program in early Jan. It was an informal interview with an admissions committee member. I was told decisions would be released on/by Feb 15th. I'm hoping they are sent out earlier because I'm getting impatient lol
-
I had 4 interviews. I am a dude. I wore a white dress shirt and blue tie to all of them. I know it probably doesn't matter, but I would rather be over-dressed than under-dressed. Plus, you want to make a good first impression. Nobody is going to give you shit for over-dressing, but they might if you are under-dressed (unconscious bias at least). All my interviewers were not dressed up at all lol. One of my interviewers even laughed and asked me "why are you all dressed up?". I told him "I want to set a good impression" and it made him laugh and kind of made the interview more chill lol. TLDR: DRESS TO IMPRESS BABY. IT DOESN'T HURT!

Are you aware of anyone in your cohort that was accepted without an interview? Thanks!
-
Thanks for the info. I see that you are a current PHS student. Were you interviewed as part of the process (i.e. prior to acceptance)?
-
Thanks!! You too! You said you applied to east-coast schools. Where exactly? Just curious.

What you said resonates with me as well. I wouldn't want to go to a new city and just be forced to stay at home lol. I want to go out and meet new people, etc. The pandemic is really going to screw over the traditional grad school experience. And same for me -- no offers for me yet, but still good to think about, since we have very minimal time to decide post-offer (if we even get admitted hopefully lol). I would just be very careful though, since some schools don't allow deferrals and others do, but their definition of deferral means they will review your app again, but won't guarantee you admission for the next year. Another thing to keep in mind is funding - if you're accepted with funding, that might not be there the next year if you defer. Same with particular project availability, supervisor availability, etc.
-
For sure! My reasoning: 1. The pandemic really sucks. It has a taken a toll on my mental health (and for so many others). Deferring would allow me to clear my head before entering a rigorous program by possibly taking some time off. 2. I want things to go back to normal (although no guarantee) so I can get the most out of my university experience. If I begin Fall 2022 instead of 2021, it is likely that classes will be in-person or things will be almost back to normal (big assumption, but that is my hope). I want to be able to meet my classmates, professors, engage in other activities. I don't want to end up paying tons of money for me to just sit at home and attend online classes (even if it would only be for the first year). 3. Costs. I'm a CDN applicant, and thus, funding/scholarship opportunities are limited for me. A deferral would allow me to continue working and save up money so I am more financially comfortable, while also allowing me to apply more broadly for scholarships I am eligible for. Just my thoughts -- are these reasonable things? Would love to hear yours as well.

How open are schools, in general, to students deferring admission?

Anyone know if Hopkins depts/tracks send out the decisions on the same day every year? Getting anxious because last year they sent out invites on this day (for my track). I know I should just chill out and be patient...
-
Since folks are sharing their profiles, let me share mine and where i've applied. Profile: 3.6 Undergrad GPA, 3.9 Masters GPA (Epidemiology). Working in research for 2 years where i've also had the opportunity to informally supervise undergrad and masters level projects. 15ish research article publications (5 of which = first author). ~5 more pending. A fair bit of research presentations, etc. I haven't written the GRE (and tbh, I suck at standardized tests!). Applied to: 1. Harvard Health Policy: no response 2. Harvard PHS: no response 3. Stanford Health Policy: no response 3. Oxford Population Health: interview invite 4. Cambridge Public Health: interview invite 5. Hopkins Health Policy: interview invite 6. University of Toronto Health Policy: interview invite 7. A couple other CDN schools: no response

Not sure if this helps with anxiety, but I know someone who interviewed in mid-Jan for JHU HPM Health Econ
-
That's correct -- I applied to HSR. I think different tracks have different timelines?
-
I feel you on that! Fingers crossed for the both of us! Interviews aren't mandatory btw.
-
I had an informal interview with JHU HPM PhD. Decisions should be sent this week or in the next 2 weeks. The wait is killing me. Constantly checking the portal like an idiot lol
-
LOL why do you assume that?
-
Hi there. Congrats! When did you receive notice from Stanford HP?
-
Thanks for the insight. I guess time will tell!

Guys, I know this has been briefly discussed before, but does Harvard Population Health Sciences require interviews or not? The wait, lack of transparency, and lack of response from the school about their protocol is frustrating. In their FAQs, it states no interview is required, but in this thread, I've seen multiple individuals receive interviews. Any insight would be much appreciated. As per their FAQ: Is the admission based on some entry test and/or interview or is done on the basis of the academic history? Applications are reviewed on the basis of academic credentials, GPA, GRE, TOEFL, prior research and work experience, statement of purpose, recommendations and a writing sample. No other entry test or interview is required. https://www.hsph.harvard.edu/phdphs/admissions-faq/

I interviewed for U of T IHPME. No response so far. I was told decisions will be sent out in early Feb.

Keep your head up. I applied last year to two schools and got rejected. I've been working in research for the time being, and racked up some more experience. This year, I have applied to 10 schools, and received 4 interview invites so far. The road gets better, and YOU get better. Your intentions to pursue doctoral studies becomes stronger (which will show in your future interviews). You'll look back and be like: wow, I really found value in using that extra year to work. It is a learning experience, so interpret it that way!
-
Sorry to hear that! Hope you hear good news from other schools. Did they e-mail you, or did you check the portal?
