When you say bundle, you mean a computer + a monitor, right?
-
16 of February??? And they could not notify you earlier??? Anyway - the official acceptance letter is definetely good news! It must make you feel more secure. I am still keeping my fingers crossed for your funding

Thanks for the advice! I am definetely more of a desktop PC person
-
Me too! When you say PC do you mean a desktop computer or just a non-Mac laptop?
-
I have a question. I've got a netbook and I was thinking about buying a laptop and then a friend recommended me just getting a desktop computer when I arrive to the US (I am an international student). I kinda like this idea because when I am at home I prefer to use a desktop computer and I am not so sure I will use a laptop so much outside of my appartment. May be there is something about grad students' life I don't know? May be I absolutely need a laptop?? What do you think? (I will have my netbook with me anyway so if I absolutely need to type something outside of my appartment, like in a library, I can take it with me.)

Contacted by interested professor, then no word?
Strangefox replied to hart27's topic in Waiting it Out
I don't think she could have lost interest because of your email (unless it was really rude, which I am sure it was not). Many things could have prevented her from writing back to you. May be she is very busy, may be she is ill. I think sending her another email to reiterate your interest will do no harm and may help to clarify the issue. Good luck! -
Factors more important than prestige?
Strangefox replied to Golden Monkey's topic in Decisions, Decisions
I think, if everything else is pretty equal, you should go for prestige. It will definetely open more doors and create more opportunities for you in the future. Cograts on acceptances and good luck! -
Hm, that is interesting... Seems that these track's procedures are indeed very different! Anyway, somebody got lucky today, taken off the CS waitlist!
-
Don't know about CS but in another track (Media and Cultural studies) they don't have waitlists. I was told so by a professor in the program. So you are making your final decision! Good luck with that! It seems you've got several cool offer this round

After phone interview, should I email to inquire or just wait
Strangefox replied to nootnoot1's topic in Waiting it Out
Have you sent a thank-you note to a person you had been interviewed by? If not, you can use it as an excuse to ask when you can hear from the program, like: "During the interview I have forgotten to ask you when I can hear news from the program. Blablabla..." Good luck! -

That's a tough situation... Do tell us about your visit to the prestigious school. I am curious to know how it will be Good luck! -
There is something worse than waiting - making a wrong decision!! Good luck!

Yes, you can ask them what are your app's weaknesses. I would not ask too many questions though, like, how many apps they received, how many people they admitted, etc. Just ask very very politely why your app was rejected. Say that you want to improve it and you would really appreciate their feedback and help. I did that when I was rejected and received a very nice reply. But I must say that their answer depends a lot on what kind of person they are and how much time they have. They may send you a very short reply or a long and throrough one. Some schools say they don't explain reasons behind their decisions (I have read something about that on these boards). If you had an interview prior to being rejected, the chance that you will recieve an explanation is higher. To summarize: ask, there is no harm in asking; do it politely; don't expect that they will send you a thorough explanation... Good luck!

You must visit first. You must find out some interesting things during the visiting weekend. May be you'll be accepted to other schools, visit them too and suddenly see that they are better then this one. I've heard about such things happening. Stay open-minded!

I don't drink either so I will tell you what I would do in this situation. I would certainly go. Socializing, networking in grad school means a lot. I would drink water or tea or juice. If somebody laughs at me, this person is just a fool and I would not pay much attention to them. Personally, I like being special that way It sets me apart from the drinking crowd and I think its kinda nice Sometimes when there's a party and everybody is drinking wine I let them pour me some wine too, but I just take a couple of sips and that's all. I tell people: "I don't drink, so if you want to waste wine on me, you are free to do that. But I am warning you - I will drink just a little tiny bit"

I completely agree with you, guys. Fit IS everything. I felt it when I was searching for schools to apply to. I spent several month last year researching programs! My research is not in the mainstream. It is not neglected either, there are people working on these problems, but definetely fewer than on such hot-button issues as media and children or media and heath. My research is not too narrow, but my problem was that I was searching for schools with funding. I knew that I needed funding. So I started with that. Then I got a list of like 20 or something schools that looked okey money-wise and I started going through faculty pages. Finally I found only five schools with both fit and funding. But I must say that there was not the same level of fit in all these schools. And - voila - I ended up in the school with the best fit! So yes, I know, fit is everything So I will say that again and again - look for fit, contact faculty - that's the key to success!

When I was studying for GRE there was something about probability As far as I remember, the probability me being one of the best 5 among 45 applicants is higher than probability of me being one of the best 2 among 100 applicants Or may be I am totally confusing something
-
Well, 100/2 = 50 applicants for a spot vs. 45/5=9 applicants for a spot seems like a huge difference to me...
