  1. Interesting article: Is the DSW Degree a Good Fit for You? “DSWs and PhDs are both social workers with different skill sets. Choosing which route to take depends on your goals. DSWs are advanced practitioners who are scholar-practitioners. The CSWE (2020) further explains that “social work practice doctorates prepare graduates to advance practice at the micro, mezzo, and macro levels as well as in higher education and/or professional leadership” (p. 1). DSWs use and build on our professional experience to bridge theory and practice for the advancement of social work practice. DSWs apply research to practice. We explore and develop practice-based solutions to complex issues to expand and advance the knowledge base of social work from a practice-based lens. PhDs are researchers who conduct original research and data analysis to address complex issues to expand and advance the knowledge base of our profession. Both doctoral level degrees are needed for the advancement of social work and to advance just social change in our communities.” https://www.socialworker.com/api/content/99ae3762-1d68-11ec-89ad-1244d5f7c7c6/
  2. Programs just want to make sure you’re able to manage work-life balance. Demonstrate that you have insight into any limitations and a plan for what to do if/when you need support.
  3. Unions are typically sector specific and/or found in public/government jobs, depending on municipality. I’ve been in a union and I don’t think it would make a lot of sense to have a generalized social work union. Our field is so broad. As far as “national” union - each state does things so differently - with few exceptions* - I can’t see that working either (*e.g. federal jobs). FWIW, I do think social workers are undervalued and underpaid in many sectors - I don’t think unions are the solution.
  4. I start in January! Had an incredibly busy fall - wrapping up a few thing this week and going to try and enjoy the break before it all starts again! How are you?
  5. Hi! Sorry it’s been a busy fall! It wouldn’t necessarily count against you unless you were to apply to a very clinical program (e.g. Penn). I believe the clinical-focused programs tend to require the equivalent of an LCSW/LICSW .
  6. Maybe we can demystify Bama this cycle. ??
  7. Did Bama ever provide feedback? I feel like no one got into Bama last cycle.
  8. Hi! How are you doing? Do you have a short list of programs you're thinking of? ❤️

  12. Hello & Welcome! This thread is for anyone looking for information on the Doctorate in Social Work (DSW) Degree and/or those looking for support and insight into the application process! Below, you will see comments with information related to: · Why a DSW? · Current Programs · Current news on accreditation, etc. Please note, the users here do not represent any universities or programs and their opinions and insights are their own. This space is meant for support and insight. Please feel free to add any information you have found helpful! Best of luck!
  13. Welcome! What’s your background? A lot of DSW programs look at: GPA (Graduate and undergrad, although graduate often has more weight) Letters of recommendation - can, and do, they speak to your academic and professional ability? Are they academic and/or a related profession? Experience - type and length… SOP - strength of writing + understanding the program and what you can do with the degree.
  14. There are so many variables. MSW programs aren’t ranked by specialty. Do you care about rankings and/or name recognition? If so go to US NEWS & WORLD REPORT and start there…. I think it may be easier to determine if you want in-state vs. out-of-state/private and/or in-person vs. online... $--$$$$ Full time? Part time? Does your jurisdiction prefer in-state schools or require specific classes toward licensure? Come up with a short list and look at the available concentrations.
  15. It looks like Simmons has a final deadline for JULY 15th for a fall start. So maybe start new thread 8/1?
  16. What is this free then you speak of? ? i was thinking of starting the DSW 2022 thread soon to support folks preparing for programs that start next year. Maybe provide great articles on what the practice doctorate is and what each program is currently specializing in, etc.
  17. Somehow I missed this earlier! Puppy is a Golden Retriever. She’s a “field” breed, so more red and lean vs. the Goldens that are show dogs. Favorite ice cream - butter pecan.
  18. I received an acceptance call from Tulane! (SPRING 2022) I'm a HUGE fan of their program! It is a great balance of leadership, policy, and practice with an emphasis on applied research. Their school of social work has institutes, and active research, related to trauma and resilience and Tulane is a top 50 nationally ranked Tier 1 University. I’m beyond excited!
  19. We have touched on this in this thread. Interesting article: Evolving Education: Defining the Terminal Degree By Sue Coyle, MSW Social Work Today “…as the degree increases in popularity and awareness, questions and concerns have begun to circulate about what the increasing presence of DSWs could mean for the field. The term terminal degree is one that has become fraught with emotion, as professionals and leaders question what the consequences of labeling the DSW as such will be.” https://www.socialworktoday.com/archive/MA19p10.shtml
  20. I don’t think your HS GPA factors in?? What was your undergrad GPA?
  21. Teaching this summer! Training a puppy. Trying (and so far failing) to keep up with weeding my garden... No news yet on my application... I was told it can take a while. Distractions.... Caught up on Cobra Kai and started LOKI..... How about you?
  22. Hi! I've just been busy with work and wrapping up my kids' semesters and transitioning them to summer camp! I feel like June is flying by! How's summer semester going?
  23. I don’t think they interview. No news yet. ? Patiently waiting, distracted by the summer semester and AMC stock prices ?
  24. I’d be curious to hear what the conversation is around current DSWs. I hope MSW and DSW degrees, for those who want them, become more affordable and that pay and benefits (including loan assumption/forgiveness) are able to support the growing demand for professional doctorates in our field.
  25. What have you learned about KU’s DSW? It’s such a new program. Curious to learn more!
