Congrats on Tulane! I like their applied research focus.
-
Definitely! Very curious if they’ll ever try to add a SW license at a doctoral level. It’s such a delicate balance between “professionalizing” a field and the possibility of inadvertently creating more barriers to the field. A lot of professions are adding doctoral level accreditation and advanced licensure.

The wish SC had a clinical option or integrated practice. I like macro too.
-
Wisconsin - nothing around here that’s in-state unfortunately.
-
Welcome! Thank you for the update from admissions! I have also heard that this year is especially competitive. (Of course!) How big is Buffalo’s cohort? I’ve heard great things and I like their trauma-informed focus. Are you a New York resident? Honestly, some of these public schools wind up as expensive as private if you’re not in-state. E.g. Rutgers would be more expensive than Penn (for me) when you factor in the required travel. ? I wish NYU’s program was 100% online. ???

MSW: Tuition vs. Earning Potential
DSWstudentTSSW replied to bananamuffin's topic in Social Workers Forum
University of Chicago + work for the VA! It really depends on the sector. Where do you *want* to live afterward? -
Yay!
-
Nothing yet for me.... either way. ? I’m trying to keep busy. Occasionally, I’ll check ApplyWeb because I’ve seen a few cases where folks had an acceptance/rejection waiting and never got a notification to check. I think my actual chances go down each day I don’t hear anything - knowing that many calls went out Thursday afternoon. Who knows though! ?
-
Very true! Especially since SC probably spent a lot of money to get these high quality recorded asynchronous sessions that are now possibly outdated. 2U was first in offering LMS.... Unfortunately they definitely locked folks into bad contracts - USC, DU, etc. Now there is *actual* competition (noodle, canvas). I would be curious what the T&C of contracts are like these days. Tulane uses Noodle, Columbia uses canvas.
-
Very good point! I believe Simmons is < 1 year old. I think they launched last fall? Simmons and USC both use 2U for their asynchronous platform.
-
@SWlove that’s great to hear! The curriculum looks promising. I think my hesitation was that it was so new. @susangardnerI hope you get a follow up phone call today! @ everyone else - let’s keep crowdsourcing Intel on programs, application processes, etc! And for those of us who haven’t heard back from Penn yet - hopefully we get information and clarity this week!
-
Not this cycle. I may expand my search. Simmons and Bama are definitely on my radar because of their focus on clinical + leadership + teaching.
-
Welcome! Did you apply anywhere other than Penn? How did your interview go? Keep us posted if you get a reply!
-
I’ll also add - whatever the outcome - for me, this has been a great learning experience and I’m glad I created this thread. Perhaps someone applying next cycle will find this this thread in a Google search (::wave::) and gather insight and/or learn more about different programs. Having this thread made the DSW application process less lonely and it is a great way to network! Annual gradcafe DSW threads FTW!

It looks like - historically - calls go out first and then within 3-5 business days, the notifications for those waitlisted or denied. Typically the non-admit notifications are an email from admissions to check the portal. Saying that, there is a newish administration, so things may be slightly different this year. I’m sure everyone will know fully by the end of the week

Don’t worry about them. Higher education is a business - especially professional degree programs - and they’re used to it. I guarantee you they will have someone to fill your spot. If this were a PhD program, it would be a little different as far as politics and possibly burning bridges.... MSW level - don’t sweat it. When making your list of the pros and cons of each program - don’t give any weight to that aspect.

I totally get that. Is school going to be in person this fall at NYU? I would also factor in Covid.

100% ~ if you’re going to live in CA, a Cal State {cost of tuition + value of networking) > most, if not all, options.* *barring a significant scholarship elsewhere, in which case you would still want to weigh networking ?

UCLA is going to be about 42K for tuition and NYU looks to be about 106K tuition. Neither includes cost of living. Even with a 30K scholarship, NYU is 2x as expensive as UCLA. Again, depends on your financial situation.... but crushing student loan debt should be avoided if at all possible. Further, you could have access to stipends at UCLA in return for working with a CA-based agency (DCFS, DMH)... this would mean - essentially - a guaranteed job at graduation with an agency that pays pretty well and provides clinical supervision. UCLA is also pretty close to the West LA VA, another great agency to intern/work with.

The tuition + cost of living in NYC.... I would do UCLA, unless you are in a situation where you don’t have to take out any loans in which case - go with your heart’s desire ❤️

Applying to PhD in Social Work without MSW/Masters
DSWstudentTSSW replied to anthrosoc's topic in Social Workers Forum
Yes there are programs that offer joint MSW/PhD. You would likely have to show an exceptionally strong research background at the bachelors level. -
Are you a CA resident?

Has anyone who didn’t receive an acceptance call had any kind of update or communication on official rejection? I periodically check ApplyWeb. ?
-
Possible.... ?? I’ll hold out a little hope until I’m officially rejected.
