  1. Unless it's George Mason, as @ydlr suggested! I didn't realize Mason was in Virginia, and there have been other acceptances mentioned there.
  2. Via Draft there is an acceptance to Indiana and an acceptance to an unspecified school in Virginia. Not sure whether the latter is UVA, Virginia Tech, Hollins, or something else.
  3. AWESOME! I second @pattycat; spill the beans!
  4. @maddykrobI didn't apply to Miami, but thanks for sharing your experience! Just makes me all the more excited at the prospect of attending an MFA anywhere.
  5. February is usually my least favorite month, as it's the last gasp of cold before spring and lacks anything to really look forward to. This year—assuming some decisions are handed out—it will be much better than usual or further affirm its place as the worst.
  6. Someone on Draft got accepted to UC Davis.
  7. I expect seven phone calls tomorrow begging my attendance.
  8. Good choices! I also applied to ND. The job market was a tough thing. I had a good reporting job at the time, but I was disillusioned with the way that a lot of it was becoming a kind of "in" club (at least in Seattle) with who got which jobs where. And I also have some questions about the direction of journalism in general. I saw a lot of unprofessionalism in some of the kids coming out of UW. But most of all, I just left because I always wanted to write fiction, and I figured it was time to invest in my real passion.
  9. Welcome, and good luck! Which programs did you apply to? I did journalism for my undergrad and then worked in the industry for a couple of years afterward before deciding it wasn't for me.
  10. Congrats! Must feel great to get that first acceptance out of the way so you know you don't need to stress!
  11. Anyone apply to Vermont College of Fine Arts or SAIC? Looks like we've got an acceptance from the former and a couple of interviews for the latter.
  12. That's my concern about my alma mater. The University of Washington just mentions that everyone gets some funding but doesn't explain any more than that. It is supposedly a strong program, but one of their faculty just said only a few people are getting fully funded there.
  13. There was a DePaul acceptance today, but that's all I've seen.
  14. I applied to seven schools this year; my list for next year has 21.
  15. I've only seen the one person mention getting an interview, no one else, which seems curious. Echoing @tippybug, I wish I had applied there, and it's on my list for next year if I don't get in.
  16. Congrats!!! TIme to get juice drunk!
  17. My favorite by far is The Writing Life by Annie Dillard.
  18. I think that's definitely fair. For me I haven't yet reached the point of being stressed checking these sites; they've been more for looking at when I'm not doing anything. That being said, once people start mentioning my schools the blood pressure will rise a bit.
  19. The Draft group on Facebook.
  20. Different kinds of conversation, and some people do value anonymity. Also, that number is hyperbole; I usually don't check this site more than 97 times in a given day.
  21. I also did community college to save money before transferring to UW. To me, there wasn't a large difference between the prereqs I took at CC and the first few prereqs I did before getting into my major classes. I think for the people who are just trying to get a degree and move on to the professional field there's hardly any difference. But I was driven and for me the university made a huge difference because of the resources available for me. For almost my entire time at UW I was able to work in journalism on a professional level, and even though I later decided against a career in that field those experiences were invaluable.
  22. Anyone apply to Boise State? Looks like they sent out emails for interviews.
  23. It'd make a big difference. I do decently well with acclimating to new places alone, but it would definitely be a relief knowing someone in a new city. Part of why Gradcafe is great is that there's always a chance that several of us end up in the same programs.
  24. I think it's great that you have a such a solid idea of why Notre Dame is the right school for you. I so often bounce between things I like about different schools. Hoping ND follows the path of some of the other schools and gets back to us early this year!
  25. Welcome! I think you've got a solid plan going forward. And Ozeki's great! I loved A Tale for the Time Being and a short story of hers I read; I can't remember its name at the moment.
