  1. You're most welcome. Yes, I did receive another offer elsewhere and will be accepting it. Hopefully you'll get an offer from CUNY next week. :)) Wishing everyone all the best in this new journey
  2. Hi! I'll be turning down my offer in the next week or so. I hope you're high on the waitlist and that they extend an offer to you!
  3. Hi! I'll be turning down my offer in the next week or so. I hope you're high on the waitlist and that they extend an offer to you!
  4. Not yet...waiting on funding to come through from Rutgers and have one more school I'm waiting to hear back from. Nervous and would like to wrap things up ASAP but there are no updates so it sucks
  5. Hello! Not sure how many of the people here who were interviewed got in, but wanted to ask how many have heard rather troublesome things about the department/program...?
  6. Popping in to say hello and hope everyone is holding up okay - saw that there were 666 replies on this thread and wanted to bump it up to 667. ?
  7. I'm starting to think Rutgers is not going to be able to secure the funds for the students they admitted...
  8. Has NYU already sent out all acceptances and rejections? I received neither an acceptance nor a rejection, and there's no update on portal. Anyone else on the same boat?
  9. You should watch the show Mind Hunter, the main character's girlfriend is a sociology grad student
  10. Hey everybody! I know that those who were admitted to Rutgers are still waiting on funding info (I'm one of them), but I wanted to get an initial feel for peoples thoughts on the Rutgers Sociology program VS GC CUNY. I got into both, thankfully, and though the situation with Rutgers still looks kinda fuzzy I'm having a hard time figuring out which one would be the better option. I spoke with the director at Rutgers and he sounded confident that the funding will come through. So, thoughts on pros and cons of each? Would especially be good to hear from people who have some sort of connection and insight at either of them. I actually spoke to one prof at another school I interviewed at who bad mouthed Rutgers (hes an alum) in a way that did not sit well with me when he found out I was shortlisted there... so, trying to figure out if that bad mouthing was valid or just heresy.
  11. Hello! I'm the student who just turned down their offer. I did turn it down due to getting offers from higher ranking schools, but I will say that their program is really good especially in the area of transnational sociology. I also felt like the faculty was very warm and the students were very friendly, which I think are important factors to consider. If you're going to be somewhere for several years it should at least be a relatively healthy environment (relatively healthy for PhD students anyway). As someone else mentioned, it does depend on your interests and the faculty members expertise. Another thing is that you have at least five years to really maximize what you've got. Network, present at lots of conferences, build a good relationship with your department faculty - the bigger names have wider networks and will come in handy when you apply for jobs and need a reference. I think many faculty members who ended up teaching at great schools but didn't graduate from Ivys did just that. Personally I couldn't see myself living in UC for that long. There was also the question of summer funding (ask about that), they'll probably tell you what they told me which is that you can apply for TA positions and make money that way. Congratulations on getting in and best of luck with your decision. I did my homework pretty well on the program so if you have any questions feel free to reach out.
  12. Anyone applied to the New School for Social Research? Just wanted to let you know I spoke to them and they said they'll be sending out decisions in mid-March
  13. Thank you @jetsetter and @JimmyR. I've emailed them. Hoping for a positive response.
  14. Hello! Any advice on how to politely turn down an offer? I don't think that just going to the portal and clicking "I Decline" is okay or respectful, so I'm thinking of reaching out to the faculty members I've spoken with directly but not sure what to say... I will be accepting an offer elsewhere but don't want to make them feel bad!
  15. I'm really happy to have been accepted, but will probably need to definitely look into tips and resources on living in NYC. @abugslifeI'll probably reach out to you in the next couple of days. With that said, and with this year being such a fiscal challenge, is the general consensus that this year there would be no leeway to negotiate offers compared to past years? I know that a lot of people say negotiate if you can, but at the same time I feel grateful to have been accepted in the first place and I know it was a challenge for them to scramble to get the funding, so I don't want to come off as ungrateful but I'm really just curious to know if there's any possibility of increasing it. So I guess my question is, is it worth asking, or would I be shooting myself in the foot?
  16. For anyone who's been waitlisted at University of Illinois Urbana Champaign, I'll be turning down my offer in the next couple of weeks. I'm just weighing the pros and cons of the other offers I have for now, but I'll definitely be turning down UIUC.
  17. Hello! What was your experience like at MAPSS?
  18. I don't think so sadly, my understanding is that they only had enough money to extend offers to 1/3 of their usual anticipated cohort, so the ones who received the emails yesterday are probably it...unless you end up waitlisted and someone else turns down their offer
  19. Anyone know what the status is with Yale? I vaguely remember seeing someone post that they were interviewed there but I could be mistake...or hoping that I'm mistaken and that Yale doesn't do interviews and theres still hope..
  20. I thought about the GC apartments but they have a no pet policy and I have a cat so it's a no go for me unfortunately
  21. It's great to hear you got your first acceptance, congratulations and I hope you'll get into CUNY too! Allow yourself to celebrate and get excited about that first acceptance either way. ?
