  1. Did anyone have to harass their recommenders for their LORs? Two of my professors were really on it, but one of my recommenders had to be reminded a few times. It made me really uncomfortable to do be so pushy, but I started to worry.
  2. I want to ask this before I hear back from anywhere, so no one has to worry why I'm asking. When we hear back from schools, should we post on this forum or only on the Admission Results page? Just want to know about proper etiquette and such.
  3. You can totally not answer this if it's personal. I was wondering, but all of my friends who were PCVs already served, so they don't know either. Do you get to return to service at some point after things are safer?
  4. Yeah, that makes perfect sense crossing genres. You should totally make a series too. I can't speak for the whole gang, but I for one love to hear about the adventures of other poets. And thanks, I've been very blessed. Your life also sounds freaking legit. Teaching in India as a fallback. That's hands down pretty awesome.
  5. Your bowls and magnets sound really cool! If we're in the same program (total longshot, I know), I'd love to see them! I'm curious, how has Nonfiction been? Do you write about the everyday or about more adventurous stuff? 1. I'm actually finishing undergrad this semester. I'm an older student, but never too late to finish! I'm taking a mural class that I'm stoked about. I'm not sure how it will work given the Pandemic, but I'm excited nonetheless. I also have a virtual internship teaching remedial English to some of our international students for one of my classes. I'm super excited about that also! 2. I've been working on a music video for one of my songs. I'm totally new to making visually-interesting videos, so it's quite fun to experiment and be creative! 3. I've been blessed with an amazing job that I love. God has been good to me.
  6. I can't help but ask, did you get accepted to TFA, or possibly City Year? As a two-year AmeriCorps alum, it sounded like it could be one of these programs, but it could totally not be of course. Service years are awesome! Congrats! I was considering applying to Peace Corps as a potential fallback (if I got into it, of course), but they're not accepting applicants at the moment due to the Pandemic.
  7. I totally felt like applying was like a job. I was working two jobs this past fall and feeling really overwhelmed, and a lot of people couldn't relate to the stress of applying to grad school. Your research paper sounds exactly what they're looking for! Research in literature is never bad, especially for CW. I worked in remedial reading for four years and loved it. Before I started teaching literacy, I thought that the inability to read applied to books and poems and such. My students taught me that it was everything... food labels, aisles in the grocery store, signs on the street. There is a whole world to which they were blind. Literacy is an awesome field. Congrats to finishing your Masters in it!
  8. I'm still kind of new to the Grad Cafe. So if this question is not appropriate, let me know. I definitely don't intend to break the code. I'm not an English major, so for my critical writing sample, I submitted an analysis of Chinese and Japanese poetics through a linguistic lens. But since I'm not an English major, I'm super curious, for those of us who had to submit critical writing samples, what did you guys write about?
  9. I had this experience with Michener too. I was a little worried and I thought I have done something wrong when I saw that others had to submit official transcripts, so this was reassuring.
  10. For those of us who applied to Ohio State, they're in the championship right now as we speak! Anyone else watching with me?
  11. Super weird question, but I've been wondering. I know COVID is negatively affecting many universities at the undergraduate level. I also have seen that applications for MBAs are way up because of economic trials. Do you guys think that there will be more or less applicants than usual because of the pandemic? Obviously no one knows; it's just a curiosity.
  12. I wasn't a Creative Writing major or English major either, but I did reach out to Creative Writing faculty to at my university. Two professors actually gave me feedback on my work and tips on my application, as far as what they are looking for when they accept candidates. One professor said that he wanted to focus on students who he has taught in person, and that was completely understandable. This post is completely irrelevant to whether or not you get accepted or don't get accepted. But if you do ever need any tips on the process (even the waiting game), I will say that the professors at my school in CW were a great resource to me, even though I never met them in person.
  13. I applied to Brown, Iowa, Michener, Oregon State, U of Oregon, U of Washington - Seattle, UC Irvine, Miami, USF, Ohio State, U of Minn, U of Michigan, Notre Dame.
  14. Hey guys, I posted in here yesterday, but didn't introduce myself. (I'm learning that a lot of people introduce themselves.) I'm super new to the grad application process, and I too am in total purgatory. I'm 28, I'm a linguistics major (graduating in the spring) and I've applied for poetry. I'm both super excited and super nervous. Glad to meet you guys! Everyone seems really supportive and that's awesome.
