  1. Hi folks, For Chicago Manual of Style, 18th (most recent) edition, how do you format this source for your References list? I need it in author-date format. The problem is that there's an editor and a translator. As you'll see, there are two editors, one of whom is also the translator. I don't know how to cite this. Is this right: Nietzsche, Friedrich. 2002. Beyond Good and Evil: Prelude to a Philosophy of the Future, edited by Rolf-Peter Horstmann and Judith Norman. Translated by Judith Norman. Cambridge University Press. Thanks!
  2. Hey folks, GRE scores are optional for all the philosophy Ph.D. programs I'm applying to this year, but I've heard a good score can boost your application slightly. Are my scores high enough to be worth mentioning? If not for all programs, at least for less competitive ones? Here are my GRE scores (taken in 2021): Verbal: 167/170 (97th percentile) Quantitative: 154/170 (36th percentilešŸ†) Analytical Writing: 5.0/6.0 (92nd percentile) Total (sans Writing): 321 For context, I'm applying to programs with strengths in 19th century philosophy (e.g., Yale, Chicago, UC Riverside, Northwestern, as well as some Continental programs like DePaul and Penn State) with a writing sample on Hegel. So they're not expecting me to be doing anything with that low math score. Thanks for any pointers!
  3. How to compare PhD placement of MA programs? Hey folks, I need to choose between terminal MA programs by Friday. I've seen each program's placement record (i.e. their placement record into PhD programs) but I find it hard to directly compare the data from multiple schools over multiple years... Has anyone encountered or created a ranking other than Philosophical Gourmet Report's (aka PGR) one? PGR seems very granular for PhD programs, but for MA programs it just lists general tiers (e.g. first tier is Tufts only, second tier is a group of 6 schools or so, like GSU, NIU, and Brandeisā€”and so on) but the problem is that it doesn't differentiate between the multiple schools in each tier. (Here's the PGR page for MA rankings for 2017; couldn't find one for 2021). Perhaps someone has "calculated a score" for each of these second-tier MA programs based on something like the following: the average PGR ranking of each one's PhD placement record, over, say, the last fifteen years? A reductive approach, admittedly, but it could be helpful nonetheless. (I could try to do it myself but don't want to reinvent the wheel if it's already been done!) Feel free to comment or DM me if you want more deets of what I'm looking for. Thanks for any pointers!
  4. I'm considering applying to a MA program and from there to a PhD. Will probably focus on applied ethics in the areas of bioethics or AI. The writing sample is one of the most important parts of an application. I wanted to get some pointers on where I could find examples of successful writing samples for grad programs, so I can get a better sense of what my sample will need to be. I've looked at some journals for undergrad publications, which may go on to get repurposed as writing samples, but haven't found many writing samples specifically. Alternatively, you could just send me yours! If you are or were an MA philosophy student, and you wouldn't mind sending your writing sample, I'd certainly appreciate it if you could DM me a link or file. You can of course anonymize the paper if you prefer. A few things I'd request to be included are: Which program(s) you were accepted to with this writing sample (school name and whether it was MA or PhD). MA preferred as I'm leaning towards an MA first. When you applied Any comments you can provide on how you got feedback on your writing sample before submitting it Not to get greedy, but if you'd like to throw in your statement of purpose too, that would greatly help! At this stage, I'm just trying to get a good sense of what the whole end package of an application tends to look like. Many thanks for any pointers you can give!
