PhD/DrPH Applicants: Fall 2021

Just got my rejection from Brown's HSR program. This was expected as I wasn't interviewed. 3/4 rejections so far. The 4th will come soon, as I haven't been interviewed there. I'm going to need to regroup and re-strategize for next year's cycle. I've been working in maternal and child health space for 12 years, am a returned Peace Corps Volunteer, I graduated with my MPH from Johns Hopkins where I won an award for my capstone research project. I worked on monitoring and evaluation of global maternal and child health programs for a few years post-MPH, and for the last three years I've been working as a researcher at a Harvard SPH lab. I have first authored 2 papers, second-authored 3 papers, and am a middle author in some others. I did not submit my GREs unless required. I'm interested in the intersection of MCH quality of care and implementation science. My recommenders are well-known in the field. I'm writing all of this to contribute to the ongoing conversation on this forum to de-stigmatize rejection. I'm trying to view this as an opportunity rather than a failure. I only applied to schools that were geographically close this year due to covid, so next year I'll get to expand my search a bit more. Hopefully that will make it easier to find a better match. I'm using this year to regroup, gain more experience, and to identify programs that might be a better fit. (And maybe try for a kid pre-PhD!). This has been a great forum! It's good to know that there are so many up-and-coming, qualified, passionate public health researchers. We need it! Good luck to you all! -

I'm in the same boat (and city!) as you! We're trying to plan when to have kids based on what happens with my PhD journey. Originally we were thinking I'd get in this year and we'd wait until classes were over before trying. Since it's looking like I'm not getting in this year, our timeline has suddenly moved up! We're thinking we'll try this year. If all works out, I'll have a little one before starting classes. I'm also going to apply to more programs next year (further away from family). I'm nervous about how it might my ability to do the work. My focus is on maternal and child health though, so maybe it'll give me some addition insights ?. I'm looking forward to following this thread! Thanks for setting it up! -

This is so real. I don't have kids (yet) but my husband and I are planning to start at some point during my PhD journey. Since it's looking like this PhD cycle isn't going to work out, we're talking about trying this year before next cycle (!!). I'm nervous! I'd love to hear from people who are already parents about how you're planning to balance it all. -

Out of curiosity (because I think this will be my situation), what did you do to strengthen your application between cycles? -

I saw some rejections on the results page so I checked the portal. Thank you for the note! I've come to terms with the fact that I'm likely not getting in this year. I only applied to 4 (very competitive) programs. I really like my job and wasn't willing to be very far from family during the pandemic, so I limited my applications to dream schools near family Next year I'll expand it out a little more. Best of luck to you and to everyone! -

Hi all! This is my first time posting. I've applied to four programs and have yet to hear from any of them. Trying to stay positive, but I'm open to applying again next year if it doesn't work out this year. I applied to: Brown HSR, Harvard Population Health - Global Health and Population, Hopkins Population, Family and Reproductive Health, Yale SBS. I'm interested in maternal and child health, implementation science, and health services research.
