Waitlist movement is entirely dependent on how the institutions you applied to structure their waitlists. Some go by field, some don't.

Regarding waitlists - do people who have been watching this process for a couple cycles have a general idea about how the likelihood of getting called up from a waitlist changes as we get closer to the mid April decision deadline? My intuition would be that the odds go down a little each day as the pool of uncommitted accepted students dwindles, but not sure if is offset by a last minute rush of late deciders or anything like that.
I know that at any particular schools it's really just dependent on what a handful of accepted students decide, but just curious about the overall trend

I don’t know about MA but I was accepted for the PhD so I assume most decisions at graduate level have gone out, partly because I saw an MA acceptance on the results page.

Starting with the caveat that I'm neither an accountant nor a lawyer:
I remember reporting it as "unearned income" and then calculating the monthly state/federal taxes and withholding it that way.

I agree with this idea! I think letting these two different topics occur in a single thread can create unnecessary hostility and brings forth the potential for toxicity.

I didn't see this! I definitely wanted to post something similar, but didn't feel it was my place.
Expanding on this though -- I definitely get that the future after a PhD is not that bright. I still want a PhD in spite of that. I'm a first gen low ses college kid, where neither of my parents earned degrees after HS. Yes, I want to have a PhD to be a producer and disseminator of knowledge, to learn and read old documents and spark conversations. I want it for the reasons that most of us want it. However, at the end of the day -- I want it for me.
We're all too stressed over notifications to deal with the doomsday stuff as well. If someone applied for a PhD without accepting that a TT job/academic job may not be their reality in the future, that's an individual thing. I spent the first semester... year... all of my MA hearing about how bad the job market is and all that. Just let people be happy.

While I did receive a rejection from Wisconsin-Madison... that can't bring me down because I got into the University of Oregon!!!!! I got the official letter today, and honestly, I am beyond excited.

Being on the waitlist is better than being rejected! It at least means you're still in the running for a spot! I'd reach out to your PoI and ask about how the list looks and where you are on it. Hopefully you have better luck this year getting off it if Harvard is your number one pick!
Also, congrats to all the Wisconsin admits!

Good luck to everyone this week in what will likely be a big decision week! At the end of the day, the judgment is not about your worth as a scholar but more about the “fit” within the department. Nevertheless, best of luck!

It means you need to think about what the PhD actually taught you to do, and how that experience can apply beyond the narrow scope in which you've deployed it.

This is unsolicited advise for those who received an offer.
First, I want to reiterate and heavily insist on what several of us veterans here try to convey periodically: there is more to a program than the imagined prestige of the university. Not all programs are fit for everyone, so as you get acceptances, research everything that tilts your needle: research funds, summer stipends, healthcare, teaching responsibilities, living costs, etc.
Secondly, I'm sure you are aware of the Harvard Anthropology Dept issue taking up much of Twitter this week (tl;dr: A prof in the dept was put from paid to unpaid leave because of the findings of a sexual harassment complaint. The problem is that big names in Anthro and outside of Anthro (especially historians) from Harvard and off-Harvard have closed ranks in two open letters, protecting their colleague). [I'm not characterizing Harvard or any department here, but I personally find it troublesome how tenured folks quickly closed ranks without having all the information, which neither have I].
To this end, I share a resource you might find useful, a database of sexual harassment complaints and their status: https://academic-sexual-misconduct-database.org/
I hope you find it useful.
