  1. @all4foofightersYes the tuition$$ at these places is kind of nuts. I have a little bit of tuition reimbursement at work and I just got my MSW student loans forgiven so how annoying is it that I'm like "lets take out more loans then!". But i've thought about/wanted to get a PHD/DSW for 5+ years now and I just have to do it.  The psychedelics and racial trauma pieces are so interesting and critical and I would think a school would very MUCH want to support students focusing on that because I think they're both very innovative/emerging topics that I also think future students and SW professionals will want to learn about. I'm very geared towards substance use treatment, LGBTQIA+ populations, and chronic condition management- also want to do some work in perceptions of pain and alternatives to traditional pain management.

Good luck to you! The wait has been long but I think we'll be posting updates in no time which is also just a different kind of stressful!

  2. @all4foofightersApplication was actually not too bad- a while ago I had a applied to a PHD program so i really just updated and adapted a lot of those materials. I got some good letters of rec (but wishing I knew someone better with an actual DSW). UPENN has a recorded video interview that definitely felt awkward but I think i did fine. Definitely hoping i know something soon. I'm also an adjunct and now my school is asking for my availability for next semester and I can't commit until i know what might happen!

Oh no- October is SUCH A LONG WAIT! You were totally probably hoping to hear by Dec/Jan at that point! It feels silly for a school to sit on an application for nearly half a year! I had reached out to NYU last year and it felt very very clinical in nature which isn't so much of my background (mine is more research + Teaching) so I just anticipated it wasn't going to be a good fit.

Keep us posted. Good luck everyone!

Just got my rejection from Brown's HSR program. This was expected as I wasn't interviewed. 3/4 rejections so far. The 4th will come soon, as I haven't been interviewed there. I'm going to need to regroup and re-strategize for next year's cycle.

I've been working in maternal and child health space for 12 years, am a returned Peace Corps Volunteer, I graduated with my MPH from Johns Hopkins where I won an award for my capstone research project. I worked on monitoring and evaluation of global maternal and child health programs for a few years post-MPH, and for the last three years I've been working as a researcher at a Harvard SPH lab. I have first authored 2 papers, second-authored 3 papers, and am a middle author in some others. I did not submit my GREs unless required. I'm interested in the intersection of MCH quality of care and implementation science. My recommenders are well-known in the field.

I'm writing all of this to contribute to the ongoing conversation on this forum to de-stigmatize rejection. I'm trying to view this as an opportunity rather than a failure. I only applied to schools that were geographically close this year due to covid, so next year I'll get to expand my search a bit more. Hopefully that will make it easier to find a better match.  I'm using this year to regroup, gain more experience, and to identify programs that might be a better fit. (And maybe try for a kid pre-PhD!).

This has been a great forum! It's good to know that there are so many up-and-coming, qualified, passionate public health researchers. We need it! Good luck to you all!

Just want to give you EVEN MORE kudos for this post- I'm in substance use/HIV for 10+ years and have had a rough go of it in terms of PhD cycles. This year has been my "lets find a school that won't dramatically alter my life" cycle and next year I guess will be a much different approach. Thanks for this again.

Y’all had some great answers as to when you applied for your PhD program, how much experience you have, etc – thanks so much!

One follow up: I heard from my BSW advisor that the school in which you received your MSW doesn’t matter too much for getting into a PhD program. Can anyone speak to this?

I think getting your MSW at a university you might intend to get your PhD in is a huge help- you'll know faculty, you'll have an "in", you'll be able to speak to a lot in your SOPs. That said- i've also seen a lot of posters say they did NOT get into their uni/school's PHD program despite having gotten their master's there so its not 100% guaranteed. In general what i like about SW is that they're not too elitist in terms of colleges/university's and i think it more has to do with research/experience/fit with faculty, etc.

I've thought about applying to a PhD at my MSW institution but my interests over time have really drifted away from what a lot of their faculty do so i'll definitely not be a great fit there.

I am not! I am actually in Michigan lol freezing as always.

    are you in NYC?

Yes- been here for almost 8 years! Trying to get in somewhere here but next year will look at places around the country- my partner loves NYC so has wanted me to focus here but willing to go elsewhere if its all bad news (hopefully it isnt!)

No worries! Sending good vibes your way! I know how it feels checking your emails every 10 minutes and waking up in the middle of the night! It's awful!!!

I hope you get into the program you want and wish you all the best!

You too! Are you based now in NYC?

    @AReelExpert are you in NYC?

Just checked, yup! It says “submitted” gah! Just tell me already ?

SAME- i feel like i'm just not as productive with my work with having this holding pattern over this potential result!

Sorry @HOPfor turning this briefly into a Columbia thread. I'm applying to NYU next year if this is bad news for me- i ONLY applied to Columbia this year (as it works better for my work) but I'm casting a much bigger net next year.

    Hi Everyone,

I just received an offer from UIUC, very surprised and excited! Still waiting for other schools, BU, BC and Columbia.

    Congrats!

Still awaiting Columbia too- seeing acceptances show up on this forum is definitely fueling my anxiety/eagerness!

Mainly Social Work but I did apply to two psych programs :)

I do have and MSW and my LCSW license. Hbu? Do you have an MSW?

OK awesome! I know so little Social workers getting PhDs that this is nice to read. I do have an MSW but not clinically licensed- i went more into administration/program management. I thought i would want to be clinically focused when i started my MSW and QUICKLY jumped ship- lol.

I received an interview from WashU (however, it was for the Phd in Psychology and not Social Work) and was invited to a final day long virtual interview in Feb.

@KryzFerr I feel you 100%! The waiting is playing with my nerves haha.

Oh interesting you're also looking into psych programs! Awesome- do you have an MSW?

A professor from Columbia told me that there would be no interviews and that they were expecting to release decisions no earlier then late February but most likely early March

Hi- Columbia Phd SW applicant here- really ONLY applied to Columbia this year and will see about casting a wider net the following year- if bad news. To think i might have to wait another month and a half is EXCRUCIATING.
